could even the most rosy eyed yung G make any kind of rational argument that rap's best days are ahead of it and not behind it?
cuz i don't think you could.
like there will always be good stuff to dig on and shit, but i dunno...it seems like from a cultural level, economic level, internet level, there's just too much shit working against it now to really think the future could hold something that really felt huge or like a movement you know?

you know, lately I was thinking to myself that what's so dope about rap right now is that it's mostly really low stakes. there isn't a lot of pressure on rappers to be everything to everybody, so they're all really free to cultivate their own little signature styles without feeling like they have to recoup some huge amount of money that no longer exists

this is a good way of looking at it....actually it's kinda the way i've always felt about all my lil' nobody punky midwest noisy bands and shit...
so....rap is the new indie rock...or hopefully the old indie rock

loool yes,i guess, but he also has hip hop production credits. the kurupt being described as an outtake seems more like bad taste than a good sign, frankly.

Yeah, the Kurupt is really, really great. I need an mp3 of this, pronto. Kurupt's been on fire the last year or two. I'm sure you guys have heard "Yessir," which Pete Rock produced. That's another stand-out Kurupt track from the last two years or so.

i would anticipate lil b and soulja boy getting really high and making an album provided there weren't tons of verses by randoms
second song is esp dope

― ianmaxwell, Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:05 (fourteen years ago) link
he's been making songs like that for like a year or so now
― waka shame (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:08 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah but i mean is that his radio and mtv image or just mixtape tracks?
― ianmaxwell, Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago) link
well -- i think soulja boy has been weird from the start in terms of radio music i.e. "crank dat", "yahh!", "donk", "bird walk" -- he kind of abandoned that with "kiss me thru the phone" but that song probably saved his career. "turn my swag on" is pretty weird for a big radio hit i think esp in context of pop-rap in the past two years. but his most druggy stuff is just youtubes and shit like that.
