rennato: what was your ballot? it's giving me a 404

i'd look psychotic in a baklava (The Reverend), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 08:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Jesus can deej and Whiney just have the gay sex, get it over with and stop ruining threads?

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 09:28 (fourteen years ago) link

just to get off this beef...

here's a question for some reason popped in my head this AM...

given the current state of everything, and knowing what you know about the past...

could even the most rosy eyed yung G make any kind of rational argument that rap's best days are ahead of it and not behind it?

cuz i don't think you could.

like there will always be good stuff to dig on and shit, but i dunno...it seems like from a cultural level, economic level, internet level, there's just too much shit working against it now to really think the future could hold something that really felt huge or like a movement you know?

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno, I think if record sales become a pointless ambition, we could see a generation just trying to make music that is as dope as possible only for the sake of the music?

In my opinion I think the past five years will be seen as 'lol slim thug making a record called Already Platinum and only going gold.'

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago) link

you guys are nuts, wtf is going in with this thread, i almost want the youtubes back

between 200k and 400k sounds about right for Drake to me, probably not over that, although it all depends on how the single does

whiney did a 00s list? where is it?

The GAPDY Band - "You Jopped A Bomb On Me" (some dude), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, that's basically equiv to al saying something about "a bunch of critics" repping for big krit when it was pretty much just deej, me, and kells, the latter two of which heard about it from the former, although gucci's critical base has expanded somewhat from just deej/sarge/noz

i made this clear already but i used the word "crits" to describe you and deej instead of referring to y'all by name only to highlight the funniness of the name Big K.R.I.T.

Without picking a fight with you matt, i think prognosticating music trends/sales on anything but the most macro of levels seems to be a fool's game; all it takes is three arty types in a basement with a big idea being in the right place at the right time for everything to change.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i hope you guys are right, for sure...i just dunno...this year everything felt kind of exhausted in a way...not that there wasn't good stuff but sometimes i felt like everyone was just getting excited about stuff like gucci and freddie gibbs and shit not just because they were good but because there didn't really seem to be any big movement or even microgenre to really get excited about

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

also lol forks why would i think you were picking a fight w/me? aggro doesn't have to be the lingua franca of the goondom

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

just treading lightly. no lingua.

anyways, three weeks into 2010 ilx hip hop discussion has been primarily about lists, a weak jay-z/swizz track, yelawolf (which i've already listened to death), bedrock, big KRIT, J Stalin, Jay Electronica, Gucci/Drake treadmill and austin freakin city limits.
What else is out there?

don't forget that cam'ron mixtape

has your favorite stuff been a huge movement since, like, biggie? i dont think mine has, & im way more predisposed to like pop rap than most rap nerds. i mean when dungeon fan was incredible its not like they were considered the best. or outkast. same w/ UGK, they only really hit critical mass after their career was on a downward arc

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i wouldnt say rap's best days are ahead of it, but i wouldnt say its in bad shape or anything either. my impression is there's a beginning of a new cycle happening right now, a lot of new names & its sorta like critics are picking horses to bet on or something

well...tru dat i guess.

umm...i really like outkast stankonia and speakerboxx/a love below (though not as much for the sub prince shit)...and that seemed like they were close to the top of their game...maybe not THE top of their game as far as like atliens/aquemini era but at least on the top of the game they wanted to play at the time

around the middle of this decade though, even though it wasn't necessarily totally my style...i'd have to say that T.I., Ludacris, and atlanta in general seemed to be A) a big movement and B) on top of their game...esp. T.I.

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

actually I really love the first two Eminem records a lot. so that.

you know, lately I was thinking to myself that what's so dope about rap right now is that it's mostly really low stakes. there isn't a lot of pressure on rappers to be everything to everybody, so they're all really free to cultivate their own little signature styles without feeling like they have to recoup some huge amount of money that no longer exists

this is a good way of looking at it....actually it's kinda the way i've always felt about all my lil' nobody punky midwest noisy bands and shit...

so....rap is the new indie rock...or hopefully the old indie rock

rennavate, Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

The "Against the Grain" cover art on the YouTube video just confused me, is all. This certainly SOUNDS like new Kurupt.

rennavate, Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

yah it's an outtake from terrace martin's album coming soon

zvookster, Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:37 (fourteen years ago) link

The saxophonist dude?

rennavate, Saturday, 23 January 2010 22:44 (fourteen years ago) link

loool yes,i guess, but he also has hip hop production credits. the kurupt being described as an outtake seems more like bad taste than a good sign, frankly.
