"Wasted" didn't really cross over though. Not in the way any of Drake's hits have. Hell, it didn't even get picked up by the hiphop/r&b stations in Portland or Seattle let alone the pop stations. As you say yourself, rap fans ain't buying albums.

nah it went top 40 & got play on pop stations here, but im not surprised other cities ignored it on pop stations that would play, like, jay-z singles. pop rap has never been a more embarrassing 'genre'

to be fair those were cokeblunts exclusives

It went #36. That's not exactly inescapable.

xpost

i've certainly never felt better about my hip hop listening policy of "new shit put out by washed up old 90s dudes, new shit by new dudes that sound like washed up old 90s dudes, and random semi-unknown regional rappers that i download off the ILX goon thread"

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:51 (fourteen years ago) link

new shit put out by washed up old 90s dudes = raekwon, quik & kurupt, sean price

new shit by new dudes that sound like washed up old 90s dudes = freddie gibbs, royce, termanology, rhymefest

random semi-unknown regional rappers that i download off the ILX goon thread = j stalin, trae

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:55 (fourteen years ago) link

The thing is, I don't think Quik was ever washed up. Kurupt, maybe. Maybe in a commercial sense, but he's been doing his thing for his entire career, pretty consistently.

rennavate, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:57 (fourteen years ago) link

nah i know, i mean just "washed up" like most ppl don't care anymore or forgot about them, like most normal type ppl

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 06:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Fair play.

i would go ahead and bet twenny bucks that drake doesn't hit 400K on his first week. and i don't have a job, so

yeah let me get in on this too. what kind of odds will sarges give us

meanwhile, whiney's rap albums hew closer to rock critic nerd critical consensus than anyone in the above 'list'

Calling me out for not sharing the opinions of a bunch of rap bloggers just makes you look retarded

um actually im calling you out for sharing very closely the opinions of a bunch of rap bloggers

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:28 (fourteen years ago) link

what this should have made clear is that me, al, noz & j0rdan are not really anywhere close to the mainstream of 'rap bloggers'

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:29 (fourteen years ago) link

the rock critic critical consensus of all the Playboy Tre, DJ Paul and Project Pat records i stumped for?

forksclovetoFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU- (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:30 (fourteen years ago) link

most 'rap bloggers' are more passion of the weiss or simple ny-centric pro-industry drake fans. based on your best albums of the 00s, your taste hews a lot closer to 99% of 'rap bloggers' than most other people here

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:30 (fourteen years ago) link

what the fuck are you babbling about?

forksclovetoFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU- (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:31 (fourteen years ago) link

thats probably an exaggeration on my part, but its just frustrating that you cant just refer to us by name, that u disregard the actual aesthetic arguments we make by lumping us in with 'all those rap bloggers' who are apparently overhyping (say) gucci mane

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Passion of the Weiss is repping for Zu and Miranda Lambert?

forksclovetoFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU- (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont mind if u disagree -- be like "yeah, this shit is not my thing" like m@tt or even forks. but trying to marginalize gucci as some blogger hype machine shit, when ground zero for basically 90% of the critic-discourse for talking about him was originating here, was, imo, a lame cop out

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:33 (fourteen years ago) link

you are on your own dick especially as of late

forksclovetoFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU- (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:34 (fourteen years ago) link

that's actually true though

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 07:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, that's basically equiv to al saying something about "a bunch of critics" repping for big krit when it was pretty much just deej, me, and kells, the latter two of which heard about it from the former, although gucci's critical base has expanded somewhat from just deej/sarge/noz

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 09:28 (fourteen years ago) link

just to get off this beef...

here's a question for some reason popped in my head this AM...

given the current state of everything, and knowing what you know about the past...

could even the most rosy eyed yung G make any kind of rational argument that rap's best days are ahead of it and not behind it?

cuz i don't think you could.

like there will always be good stuff to dig on and shit, but i dunno...it seems like from a cultural level, economic level, internet level, there's just too much shit working against it now to really think the future could hold something that really felt huge or like a movement you know?

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno, I think if record sales become a pointless ambition, we could see a generation just trying to make music that is as dope as possible only for the sake of the music?

In my opinion I think the past five years will be seen as 'lol slim thug making a record called Already Platinum and only going gold.'

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago) link

you guys are nuts, wtf is going in with this thread, i almost want the youtubes back

between 200k and 400k sounds about right for Drake to me, probably not over that, although it all depends on how the single does

whiney did a 00s list? where is it?

i made this clear already but i used the word "crits" to describe you and deej instead of referring to y'all by name only to highlight the funniness of the name Big K.R.I.T.

Without picking a fight with you matt, i think prognosticating music trends/sales on anything but the most macro of levels seems to be a fool's game; all it takes is three arty types in a basement with a big idea being in the right place at the right time for everything to change.

yeah i hope you guys are right, for sure...i just dunno...this year everything felt kind of exhausted in a way...not that there wasn't good stuff but sometimes i felt like everyone was just getting excited about stuff like gucci and freddie gibbs and shit not just because they were good but because there didn't really seem to be any big movement or even microgenre to really get excited about

Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

just treading lightly. no lingua.

anyways, three weeks into 2010 ilx hip hop discussion has been primarily about lists, a weak jay-z/swizz track, yelawolf (which i've already listened to death), bedrock, big KRIT, J Stalin, Jay Electronica, Gucci/Drake treadmill and austin freakin city limits.
What else is out there?

has your favorite stuff been a huge movement since, like, biggie? i dont think mine has, & im way more predisposed to like pop rap than most rap nerds. i mean when dungeon fan was incredible its not like they were considered the best. or outkast. same w/ UGK, they only really hit critical mass after their career was on a downward arc

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i wouldnt say rap's best days are ahead of it, but i wouldnt say its in bad shape or anything either. my impression is there's a beginning of a new cycle happening right now, a lot of new names & its sorta like critics are picking horses to bet on or something

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

has your favorite stuff been a huge movement since, like, biggie?

well...tru dat i guess.

umm...i really like outkast stankonia and speakerboxx/a love below (though not as much for the sub prince shit)...and that seemed like they were close to the top of their game...maybe not THE top of their game as far as like atliens/aquemini era but at least on the top of the game they wanted to play at the time

around the middle of this decade though, even though it wasn't necessarily totally my style...i'd have to say that T.I., Ludacris, and atlanta in general seemed to be A) a big movement and B) on top of their game...esp. T.I.
