dunno if this is goon-approved but i'm kind of feelin the Jay Electronica mixtape.

anyone w/ the degree of hype he has is bound to be overrated but i think stupid fruity crazy swag auto goons are generally positive on the jay electronica issue

i just didn't think i'd ever rep for someone whose name is jay electronica, even if he references vonnegut

i think goons have enough influence on ilx that there will be good goon-approved rap on the list

I take it you didn't even look at the 80s list then.

i remember you lobbying for goon/rap representation on that thread, but i dunno if it really woulda made a difference, i think that list was always gonna have the 5 rap albums that were on it, give or take, it's a given that it was gonna be a small part of the picture. whereas i think who bothers to vote in the 2009 thread has a big impact on what makes the cut, and there's a lot more room for rap to show up.

Matt: are those the top selling rap albums this week? If so, yikes.
i've only heard the newest tape, but so far jay electronica rubs me as being a bit on the dull side. i can't really knock the production, since it's really beautiful and well-done and all, but it's more something i admire than actually enjoy. raps were similarly zzz.

RE: album sales - Do you suppose anyone else in hip hop is ever going to put up carter 3 numbers ever again? Or, at least, anybody we've ever heard of as of now?
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:10 (fourteen years ago) link
drake
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:15 (fourteen years ago) link
rev: yes those are the top selling rap albums of the week, second number is overall sales.
i mean, shit....as much hype as gucci's gotten and that's the kinda numbers you can do nowadays? jesus, that's like numbers in the early 90s for a Sadat X solo joint
― Na'vi Girls (Need Love Too) (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:15 (fourteen years ago) link
if he doesn't put out a bomb of a lead single i don't see how he doesn't do huge, huge numbers -- maybe not 1m in the first week but something pretty astronomical for rap

well, eminem i guess....drake lol
i bet drake does about 350K...if he's lucky

OK so i looked it up...Eminem did 608K his first week.
you are saying drake can match or exceed that number.
woo boy i would serious throw down $20 against that my man.

not surprised with gucci's relatively weak #s, what with him not having a hit single and GOING TO PRISON
― guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link
how is the young money album not on that list?
― samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago) link
he did have a hit single, its called 'wasted'
im not surprised by gucci's weak #s because the only people that buy albums are starbucks customers. its like, the closer to an overlap a rapper has with john legend fans, the more hes going to sell
that does not correspond to actual popularity
― not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 04:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Because besides from Weezy, Drake, and Nicki Minaj, no one else is any good in Young Money. (And it's a shame, Mack Maine can rap, and well, too. At least, he used to be able to).

i can see why people like him-- part of it is being wrapped up in the nyc media bubble, but a part of the reason is that he triangulates wayne & kanye & jay and none of those guys are really at their height right now. it's safe to say that for pop-heavy rap music-- world conquering rap music-- there is a dearth in terms of creativity and i think there are a lot of people who are just ready to latch on to anything, be it drake or "empire state of mind". i don't understand why uncle murder & jay electronica stanning nah right readers dig him, but that's whole different apple (GET IT?)

i think this obv also accounts for the uptick in gucci mane's critical profile in the sort of circles we're talking about here
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 20 January 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago) link
honestly i think drake's uptick in critical profile is more related to the fact that there hasnt been much of an uptick in gucci's
ppl like drake as much for who he is NOT as for what he is

That would be funny if Bol's ballot is just a joke, purposefully trying to guess consensus. Thinking those were actually his favorite albums of the year makes me sad.

"Wasted" didn't really cross over though. Not in the way any of Drake's hits have. Hell, it didn't even get picked up by the hiphop/r&b stations in Portland or Seattle let alone the pop stations. As you say yourself, rap fans ain't buying albums.

nah it went top 40 & got play on pop stations here, but im not surprised other cities ignored it on pop stations that would play, like, jay-z singles. pop rap has never been a more embarrassing 'genre'

i've certainly never felt better about my hip hop listening policy of "new shit put out by washed up old 90s dudes, new shit by new dudes that sound like washed up old 90s dudes, and random semi-unknown regional rappers that i download off the ILX goon thread"

new shit put out by washed up old 90s dudes = raekwon, quik & kurupt, sean price
new shit by new dudes that sound like washed up old 90s dudes = freddie gibbs, royce, termanology, rhymefest

The thing is, I don't think Quik was ever washed up. Kurupt, maybe. Maybe in a commercial sense, but he's been doing his thing for his entire career, pretty consistently.
