Re-released in 2008 on red vinyl with a ton of cool remixes. "I want to breathe modern air" Dez brings the lolz.

seven years pass...

So...let's talk remaster.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 June 2017 04:35 (one year ago) Permalink

the compression is not good. the officially released outtakes more than make up for it.

PaulTMA, Friday, 23 June 2017 11:37 (one year ago) Permalink

More or less compressed than the HDTracks remaster?

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 12:50 (one year ago) Permalink

how good are the fabled bonus tracks?

reggie (qualmsley), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:12 (one year ago) Permalink

Good to excellent – and they sound terrific to my un-audiophile ears.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:17 (one year ago) Permalink

would like an edit of Dance Electric. I suppose I could make my own, but

PaulTMA, Friday, 23 June 2017 13:18 (one year ago) Permalink

i'm also not an audiophile and i think the remaster sounds good!

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:34 (one year ago) Permalink

I'm with PaulTMA

Plus some of these versions of long-available-as-bootlegs unreleased tracks are completely new. And awesome.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:49 (one year ago) Permalink

I don't mean "new" as in "rerecorded" but as in "no one knew they existed before this rerelease",

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:50 (one year ago) Permalink

The PR remaster itself is way hotter than the HDTracks which is the best digital version IMHO. The og US vinyl is wonderful - still.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:51 (one year ago) Permalink

i keep both the HDTracks and the original CD on my MP3 player. Had a downloaded vinyl rip that sounded great but there were skips so fuck that obv.

Needless to say I will be buying the shit out of the new release even if not for the remaster of the album proper

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 14:48 (one year ago) Permalink

Don't think I've heard PR all the way for nearly 30 years...massive Prince head but I dunno...obviously great but apart from 'When Doves Cry' it doesn't particularly feed my Prince Jones...iforgot how full on it is...it still feels like the outlier in his early catalogue...and the song PR is a fucking dirge...looking forward to listening to unreleased stuff...what I've heard of it so far is amazing

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Friday, 23 June 2017 18:02 (one year ago) Permalink

I love Purple Rain but agree that it sticks out like a sore thumb in Prince's discography - Prince never really went for mass appeal on that scale again - not even with high profile projects like Batman.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 18:07 (one year ago) Permalink

He tried again with "Diamonds & Pearls" which was a pretty slick and commercial production compared to what came before. "Batman" , "Graffiti Bridge" sounded positively claustrophobic and weird compared to stuff like "Cream".

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:12 (one year ago) Permalink

I also never had the love for PR (really never cared for the title tune either) but "When Doves Cry" and "The Beautiful Ones" are sublime.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:13 (one year ago) Permalink

giving it a first listen, holy fuck "love and sex". i may not actually be alive by the end of the 10 minute "we can fuck", just giving y'all that warning up front. if i never post again this shit is so good it literally killed me.

Rodney Stooksbury for President (rushomancy), Saturday, 24 June 2017 02:22 (one year ago) Permalink

Diamonds & Pearls was totally a calculated "comeback" album p much the only time he specially seemed to be trying to move units. Was super popular then pretty much forgotten it seems, though the holographic CD cover must've cut into the profit margin

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 24 June 2017 03:28 (one year ago) Permalink

omg these bonus tracks

D&P is his biggest seller after PR.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 June 2017 03:43 (one year ago) Permalink

i am deaded.

i think this "we can fuck" is the full-length version of the fragment on disc 4 of "work it 2.0" only in much much superior sound quality. fuck, that bridge, it's goddamn zeuhl and there isn't even any bass on this version.

those poor fuckers on the radiohead thread.

Rodney Stooksbury for President (rushomancy), Saturday, 24 June 2017 04:32 (one year ago) Permalink

"we can fuck" is literally my favorite prince song now

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 24 June 2017 05:43 (one year ago) Permalink

Diamonds & Pearls still felt smaller in scale than Purple Rain, though.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Saturday, 24 June 2017 12:47 (one year ago) Permalink

We need to look a bit at the wider picture here too -- granted it's the jewel in the crown of the Warner years in terms of money so of course it would get the primary reissue. Even so, we ended up with a three CD/one DVD package for $25 (which puts a LOT of those super deluxe editions to shame right there), the outtakes were remastered by the guy who did the original mastering for the album to start with, Bernie Grundman, and -- something I haven't seen many people talk about! -- stellar liner notes. You've got Susan Rogers doing the main essay, plus a song by song breakdown of the main album by all the members of the Revolution, not to mention a quick note from his tour photographer from the time along with some archival photos. I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but if they could maintain this general model for the rest of the reissues, especially the 70s/80s years -- and there's no reason why said model wouldn't work (album/outtakes disc/single and extended edits/video or concert film) -- then goddamn.

Bring on the riches, I say!

stellar liner notes. You've got Susan Rogers doing the main essay, plus a song by song breakdown of the main album by all the members of the Revolution

both of these things (and the live dvd) made me wish they had sent me a physical copy before i filed my piece. oh well lol

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Saturday, 24 June 2017 13:39 (one year ago) Permalink

Annoyed at being miscredited on the reissue, Jill Jones has supposedly personally leaked Wednesday, Killing At The Soda Shop and her vocal version of Our Destiny

PaulTMA, Saturday, 24 June 2017 13:50 (one year ago) Permalink

Well well indeed. "Killing at the Soda Shop" appears to be the totally unknown rarity?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 June 2017 14:14 (one year ago) Permalink

I bought the two-CD set at Target this morning for $13. Ned's right about the lines. "We Can Funk" sounds massive in the car. Are those acoustic drums augmented with Linn?

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 June 2017 14:26 (one year ago) Permalink

somebody download those JJ leaks pls. I used to know how to grab tracks off soundcloud but I seem to have forgotten.

'we can fuck" has the basically same backbeat as "fame" by david bowie right? love it in any case

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 24 June 2017 15:14 (one year ago) Permalink

I want a rip of the version of "Purple Rain" that's supposed to be Wendy and Lisa's rough demo of it. It's the first time you hear it in the movie, and it's all with synths I think?

wow mislabeled piano demos of wednesday have been going around for years.. i dont think anyone knew what that was.

what were they mislabelled as? are they on work it 2.0?

Rodney Stooksbury for President (rushomancy), Saturday, 24 June 2017 21:56 (one year ago) Permalink

Drum pattern on "The Dance Electric" is the same as on "Mountains," right? But a little faster?

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Sunday, 25 June 2017 01:47 (one year ago) Permalink

Yep.

And it's, comparatively, my least favorite song.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 25 June 2017 02:21 (one year ago) Permalink

Hearing "Father's Song" was kinda amazing, not merely for how he interpolated that into "Computer Blue," but also because I want to hear a whole slew of tracks like that from that era.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 June 2017 02:52 (one year ago) Permalink

Just bought the shit out of this. First CD I've bought via Amazon in about a year! Ned's 'wider picture' post OTM.

i will never understand "purple rain (song) is boring/dirge/etc". i mean, on the surface i guess i understand since it's long & simple & repetitive.
but, like
i mean
they are taking you to mfing CHURCH!!!
i love it & it makes me ugly-cry so hard. i love it now even more after reading the band's liner notes where they say that it was one of their few pure collaborations where they each contributed something to the creation of the song & that made it pretty meaningful for them. i think it shows.

xpost Don't think that's ever circulated - if it exists!

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 16:45 (one year ago) Permalink

Just to clarify this is essentially BFTP 6.0 under a different moniker and minus a few tracks. 6.0 is supposed to be out sometime this month and some enterprising sould decided to undercut the BFTP folks - who sell their releases - by leaking it under another name.
