it leaked, i got it, its pretty good. not too different from the last album. "Jambi" features a vocodered guitar, thats about it for innovation.

is "jambi" an homage to the character in Pee-Wee's Playhouse? It would be, like, so typical of them.

Munya, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:01 (eighteen years ago) link

did i mention that the last song sounds like an obscene phone call from Cthulhu? i think im gonna make a mix cd of all the creepy Tool interludes (and then toss it out the window and listen to Mohnomishe instead ;))

fez, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago) link

this is actually a little weirder than the first single would lead you to think. i'm not sure if i like it or not....but i'll definitely give it several listens.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

It's mellow. Needs a few listens certainly.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:14 (eighteen years ago) link

it does need a few listens, and therefore won't convert the already loyal.

the biggest surprise is that it's not a concept album, or even cohesive one. first track is about perils of tv, the third/fourth opus is about his mothers ascension to heaven. what?

ok-to-terrible segues, strangely placed back-to-back. but man...

wings pts 1 and 2, right in two, rosetta stoned cannot wait to hear these at coachella!

that should read: it won't convert people who arent already loyal

I'm loving 'Vicarious' so far. As to mixed reactions...well, shit...Tool
always sounds like Tool, they've never really deviated from their 'sound', so to speak. That fact alone is bound to disappoint the unconverted.

I do have to vent though: no Sacramento or SF shows? I mean, I like Oakland fine but WTF???

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 20 April 2006 01:28 (eighteen years ago) link

After the usual initial "huh? what's this?" during the first five or so listens I'm becoming convinced this is their best album yet.

May need a little time/attention/patience, but once you get to know it all a little better: wow. (I can see how people with short attention spans who've gotten used to fast-food-type short and easy music will think this is impenetrably dense selfindulgence, but I think it isn't and these immense movements of atmospheric organic living breathing sound that happen to have titles work very well, so there.) (convert becomes even more converted shocka!)

hmmmm, that's a pretty broad generalization...i take umbrage, sir.

no, i can dig a 'big ol' jam-arama', but Tool's just Tool, and i guess that's all they'll ever be to me. better than alot of stuff, but i'll never cite them as something i'd WANT to listen to...

or maybe i could just make a mix of the songs i DO like!

I didn't say that everyone who thinks Tool's stuff is selfindulgence has a short attention span, I only meant that could be the reason for some people's hate. (but I explained it impenetrably densely)

"10,000 days in the fire is long enough
you're going home"

The actual explanation of the title:

As Keenan explains on commentary on aMOTION, his mother suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. The length of time between her paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days.

Now I've got the real thing (album is out since April 28th here in Belgium), with the very nice stereoscopic lenses and the amazing sound quality (much, much better than the leak), I'm even more convinced this is their best album. Too bad so few people here care about them... :-(

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 30 April 2006 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

JESUS ChRIST! Tool is bonkers!

A guy just brough the CD into work...it's absolutely nuts packaging, the stereoscopic lense thing is fucking crazy....alright I love you crazy ass math metal dudes!

The album score @ Pitchfork is about 5.8 higher than expected: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/t/tool/10000-days.shtml

The reactions, however, are exactly as low as expected: http://www.10000-days.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1851 :
"that guy's a cocksucking dipshit."

Congratz!

I still think it's their best album (only a couple of tracks on AEnima and Lateralus have remained interesting, now I've checked them out again after a couple of years, while this one has completely taken over my stereo over the last couple of weeks, not a bad track on there, even the fillers are necessary resting moments), but after a brief internal struggle I've been able to emotionally detach enough to objectively read it and agree with Ned: it's a great review.

But anyway - this whole meta thing (fans vs. reviewers) is old and pointless, so I'll shut up about it.

i saw a commercial a few days ago that i almost thought was a fruitopia (is that stuff even around anymore?) ad at first... turned out it was for the new tool album.

That Tool score was far too high. At least The White Rose Movements got a higher score than the Tool album at Pitchdork, which wasn't the case at Stylus. Then again, BOTH sites ranked Wolfmother higher. Do you people known anything about music?

But hey, the next time you're sneering at someone in a Tool shirt, just remember how retarded you look walking down the street with the words "The Boy Least Likely To" or "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" across your chest.

The entire Nu Metal genre was dud, but Tool are at least really excellent musicians, just they are using their skills in the wrong way.

This must be some new use of the word "excellent".

"Then again, BOTH sites ranked Wolfmother higher. Do you people known anything about music?"

Dude, that Wolfmother LP rocks way harder than the new Tool does.

Crack a beer, smoke a joint (you ARE a Tool fan after all) and give it another listen, it's fuckin' great.

The tool I find to be a bit like a more adventurous "Lateralus".

For me, "Aemima" was tops for them. Such a great fucking album.

But anyway, to each their own, but Wolfmother rocks.

Erock LAzron, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 03:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, both those indie bands that you mentioned, in my opinion, suck.

And I wouldn't sneer at a Tool fan, I'd just remember how much I used to like them

It might.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 03:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm still annoyed at Wolfmother's decision to ditch the rawer sound of their EP (Vertigo Records vintage 1971!). The re-recorded versions are so lifeless. "The White Unicorn" sounded better taking its time.

one of the reasons i love tool is because "aenima" reminds me of being 16 and being stoned all the time and driving around the wilderness of northern maine with little else to do besides listen to music and, uh, get high. oh, and also because eight years later i still love it, as well as all their other albums.

though i must say: upon only two listens to "10,000 days" i can't say that i'm all that impressed. i heard the first single a month ago and could predict every chord change. but it must grow on me, i suppose.

The entire Nu Metal genre was dud

What exactly is "nu-metal" and how does it relate to Tool? I thought "nu metal" basically related to rap-metal, which doesn't seem related to Tool in the slightest. Tool always seemed more aligned with Progressive Metal or Art Metal or Alt Metal or whatever empty moniker you choose for it. It has nothing to do with Korn or Linkin Park.
