kevin, i hope you are scheduling the regret-making after the baby-sitting.

yeah, i'm *hoping* i won't have to do the baby sitting as caring for an actual infant baby scares the living crap out of me. i told them they should just prop the kid up on a bar stool during soundcheck. they sell earplugs there, i don't know what the problem is.

chicago kevin, Monday, 10 December 2007 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link

The problem is that can she even hold her own head up yet? Actually she probably can, she's older than I originally thought.

Laurel, Monday, 10 December 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

they've got a car seat, strap that thing to a stool.

chicago kevin, Monday, 10 December 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Baby is going to be posting here tomorrow bitching about tall people at shows.

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

apparently kids are still into ska? and have ska bands? i don't know if this is reassuring or worrying.

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

It gives them a reason to learn the trombone, I guess.

Laurel, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I like it when brass instruments stay relevant.

Laurel, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

^^^i have very mixed feelings about this. although, one of our best trombone players started in ska.

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

good ska is good music, bad ska is bad music

dan m, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

pparently kids are still into ska? and have ska bands? i don't know if this is reassuring or worrying.

getting references for grad school = ;_; x 1,000,000

i am going to get one from my boss, no biggy. but academic references are important. i am trying to get one from a prof. who i only had for one class, but it was psychology of religion, and my majors were psych and religion, and he gave me an A-. however, i sucked overall in psych so if he looks at my overall gpa for that major then i am screwed. meanwhile, only two of the religion profs i had are still teaching at w&m and i didn't do too impressively in either of their classes (one gave me a C+ and a B, other one gave me a C+ and a B-). i got good grades in other religion classes but none of those profs are there anymore, most are probably retired and i can't remember their names anyways because it was 7+ years ago. what was i doing in college?

n/a, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

i need two refs. for one school, so that's not too much of a problem, i can use my boss and hopefully the psych of religion prof. but the other school wants three references. for the third do i use a) a professor who won't remember me and who didn't give me very good grades or b) my boss from richmond

ugh

n/a, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know what I'm talking about, bbbbuut... Maybe it's ok to use the Richmond boss since you haven't been in school for so long?

KitCat, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i emailed one of the religion profs anyways, asking if i can send her my resume and update her on what i've been doing since graduation and we'll talk about a reference once she's had a chance to read it. if i feel like her reference will be no good i can just not use it.

now for a nap

n/a, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:15 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe you should ask your mom

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Argh, I really want to skip band practice tonight because I feel like shit but was told this Friday's show is too important. :(

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Where is the next show?

KitCat, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Schubas. Label guy will be there.

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Eep

KitCat, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't think a prof being at the same school you graduated from is a requirement for using them as an academic reference? If that's the case I'm never ever going to be able to go to grad school because most of the profs I would ask for a reference have left MTU by now.

dan m, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man, I would hate to have to get refs for grad school. I've been out of school for 3 years and my last 2 semesters were trainwrecks. Right now though my boss likes me and I'm going to be enrolled in undergrad again, so I guess I have a second chance.

Nick, have you decided what you're going for? Did you say it and I missed it?

Jesse, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

My finger hurts. I cut it on a stone crab claw last night and there is a flap of skin hanging off of it. So worth it, though nomnomnom.

Jesse, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I have no idea what I would do either. I could do R1chard D4vis, and then maybe track down the one professor whose class I actually liked, participated in, and did okay in.

Where did you eat, Jesse?

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

What Dan said, unless Nick means that he can't track down the profs who have left or retired. (Although I would think the school might be able to help you with that.)

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I ate at the restaurant where I work. Hunched over a stainless steel prep table in back. Have you had stone crab?? so YUM!

Jesse, Monday, 10 December 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

And so sharp!

Jesse, Monday, 10 December 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a prof in the English department who was my advisor, my thesis advisor, and whom I took a couple of classes with, including freshman and senior seminar and an independent study. I've also kept in touch with her over the last few years, so she'd be the ideal candidate for a reference. After that, I imagine I would probably ask the chair of the English department, who's no longer there but who Google tells me is now at Cal State-Fullerton.

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Both folks who'd be my first choices are now at UW-Milwaukee.

dan m, Monday, 10 December 2007 22:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I was stubborn enough that I don't have to come to rehearsal tonight after all. I hate shit like this, though. I don't like feeling like I have to defend how sick I am.

jaymc, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link

you say that like they're dead

Jordan, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Quite the contrary, actually! They escaped the sinking ship that is their department and are much happier now, I think.

You know, you may be invincible in your four-wheel drive vehicles, but you do still have to brake like the rest of us.

Love,
