caek's reports on the cityscape of Isla Vista will amuse.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 January 2010 02:32 (fourteen years ago) link

haven't seen any oxford/cambridge varsity ski trip hoodies yet this time, although i did just see a canadian national polo team shirt (horse, not water). what a town.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:22 (fourteen years ago) link

also if yr driving to LA you can stop in carpenteria and have a burger @ The Spot. Julia Child used to eat there apparently and they had, at one point, the finest burger I had ever had

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:29 (fourteen years ago) link

in an alternate universe blenders is national and jamba juice is regional. never underestimate a sugar bomb's ability to go national

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:30 (fourteen years ago) link

sooooooooooo otm

iatee, Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:30 (fourteen years ago) link

also the owners of blenders were shot by richard avedon and the picture is hung in every blenders; you can tell that avedon was totally phoning it in

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:34 (fourteen years ago) link

haha I know what picture you're talking about

iatee, Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:35 (fourteen years ago) link

it's so weak

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I had no idea it was supposed to be anything but a cutesy local photographer type thing

but yeah, I don't go to juice places anywhere outside of santa barbara. jamba juice is horrid. I imagine it's healthier than blenders, though...part of the reason why blenders drinks taste good is that they're practically ice cream.

iatee, Thursday, 14 January 2010 06:39 (fourteen years ago) link

is the cajun kitchen still around? serious good times there 15 years ago.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

These days I'm giving a tour of the local "Fieri Hot Spots" for extra cash. The tour includes food from those places featured in Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and ends with frosted tips at Aveda.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

wait where was on ddd

iatee, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link

Norton's, some fish n' chips place that was open for all of 1 year before Guy soiled it, and some Mexican place on upper state that I've never heard of.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

There's enough good mexican food that I can believe it's good, though. I'm somewhat glad he didn't just go to super rica, even though it seems to fit the show perfectly.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

yeah milpas makes a lot more sense than anything downtown

iatee, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

true. I live over by the bowl, so I am biased toward milpas.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

including los agaves, the cheaper evil offspring of los arroyos

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

I was in sb like two weeks ago, state st is getting so depressing

iatee, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:51 (eleven years ago) link

it's shifting towards super super high end and super super low end stores at the same time

sorta a microcosm of america I guess

iatee, Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

ha, that description is kind of true. but I learned from this thread that you grew up here, so a bit of hometown depression is natural. you should check out el cielito next time you're in town. it opened in la arcada and is the best new thing imo.

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah I looked at it curiously

iatee, Thursday, 20 December 2012 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

according to http://www.santabarbara.com/dining/best_of_sb/ , 2012's best korean restaurant in town is "New China"

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

chumash casino should have everything you want and more

johnathan lee riche$ (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 20 December 2012 19:29 (eleven years ago) link

toy_sleigher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 20 December 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

my favourite eats over the weekend was whail tail deli: http://whale-tail-deli.com/default.aspx. cheap for sb, and hearty fare indeed.

xp, two dead people in four days has to be some kind of record, right. central california is perilous.

caek, Friday, 21 December 2012 11:01 (eleven years ago) link

is ucsbs astronomy good?

iatee, Friday, 21 December 2012 11:06 (eleven years ago) link

it's small for a UC astro dept (cf. UCSC, which is probably 5 times bigger?) so it has gaps because so few faculty, but it's very good

+ it has the kavli, which is a v big deal for theoretical physics

caek, Friday, 21 December 2012 13:04 (eleven years ago) link

one month passes...

one sure does hear eddie vedder's into the wild ost regularly in this town

No deaths yet this time but still a couple of days to go

restaurant turnover seems fast. any good new places places to eat/drink walking distance of say state and castillo?

caek, Thursday, 24 January 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

So you mean between state and Castillo? They are parallel I think. You mean on state by the Castillo exit off of 101?

caek, Thursday, 24 January 2013 05:39 (eleven years ago) link

I like Cielito, which is nearby in 'La Arcada.' Arlington Tavern is a new place up state 3 blocks and to the left (toward chapala). I've not been there, but I've heard good things. Cadiz is a good new Mediterranean place down State a bit from Carrillo. Scarlett Begonia is good for breakfast/brunch. If you just want a beer and a burger type thing, a place called Eureka!Burger opened in the paseo nuevo mall area a bit down state st.

Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:01 (eleven years ago) link

There's also the French Table on Anapamu by the courthouse

Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:05 (eleven years ago) link

thanking you.

Still haven't found a bar I really like here. I was enjoying the press room until someone put kasabian on the juke box and then a television programme called 'the banter zone' was on the tv very loud. Elsie's is a bit crusty.

caek, Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:10 (eleven years ago) link

haha elsie's is very crusty. I liked it for awhile, but the last time there some biker dude was talking loudly about how the Newton Massacre was a grand plan from Obama to take his guns away

Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:11 (eleven years ago) link

I'll be grabbing drinks with some photonics grad students on Friday to celebrate a guy in our group graduating and moving on to intel. Let me know if you wanna join up.

Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 January 2013 06:16 (eleven years ago) link

Hah yes Elsie's reminds me more of the uk way more than any of the pub style places. It's kind of like a perfect mixture of Austin TX and Bristol. Is 'crusty' a widely understood word here?

Unfortunately I have to be back in lol angeles on Friday.
