excellent, reliable workhorses, at least the early models (I haven't played more recent ones so can't speak on those). I would put a good ASAT up against vintage Teles for real & would guess that if you A/B'd 'em you'd have more trouble telling 'em apart than you'd think. I don't use the trem so don't know bout that but really can't recommend an ASAT highly enough.

Speaking as a dude who dropped Fender in favor of G&L last year, I have nothing but good things to say about them. The trem design is WAY better than the strat style, massive bridge block, huge solid saddles (brass maybe? dont have the specs in front of me so idk), and a captive 2 point design, meaning that the knife edge surrounds the posts which = less slippage and bullshit.

Also, the import tribute series is reasonably priced and fantastic, built in indonesia but uses US pickups and hardware (some of the hardware might be built overseas but held to dead on us spec).

The big bonus to the pickups is that unlike Fender, G&L never went down the EVERYTHING OVERWOUND ALL THE TIME rabbit hole, so the ASATs sound like teles are supposed to instead of some steroided up SRV BLOOOZ bullshit.

Also rrrabies this investigation would give you a good excuse to travel the icy wastelands and stop by my store sometime. I pretty much keep 6 of the import models in stock at all times, and will be stocking more of the US stuff when the economy decides it isnt going to kill us all.

Ha, I'm gonna be in outta town over the weekend and maybe starting new jobs when I get back, but I'll try to find some time to pop in. I'm in really dire need of strings and tired of keeping track of my solitary pick so anywho I've excuses.

G&L never went down the EVERYTHING OVERWOUND ALL THE TIME rabbit hole

^^^^^THIS IS PRETTY KEY

Don't quite follow what you mean by captive two point design but it sounds good.

I mean that the posts are completely encircled by the bridge, and the heads of the posts are larger than the holes they go through, much like what happens on a six point vintage strat trem, but done in a way that allows the reduction of friction you can get from a 2 point.

not only is that model my favorite of their geetars (ok i dig the comanche as well), but to my total surprise its also our best selling model (normally the stuff i like sits on the wall and taunts me for months)

yeah i think one of those is going to make its way in my door, they were SUPER reasonable on the way they computed the cost (wrt custom paint and ebony fretboard and other pimpadelic whaterever the hell) plus no goddamn gold holdware which i hate

gg eileen (jjjusten), Monday, 16 August 2010 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

gold hardware woulda been death (i like it on red strats bcz of dumb ron asheton bias but yeah). wish they at least had other options for the pickguard at least, i'm not into the everything all white turn away while you cough don't ever scuff it aesthetic isn't for me. but the upgrades to the DF vibrato, for whatever they're really worth, are evidently making their way onto some of the usa models and that renewed my interest in those commanches. i mean like...one day. http://www.honda67vn.com/forum/images/smilies/67/broke.gif

turn away while you cough

Changing the pickup in a white guitar today, amazing difference between the colour of the exposed paint and the paint that was protected by the pickup mounting plate.

Have to rep for G&L basses. I have two, an eighties passive Lynx and a more recent active Semi Acoustic ASAT and they are both really lovely sounding instruments, the Lynx is certainly one of the biggest sounding passive basses I've even played, looks like shit though, it's a crappy liquorice colour.

four years pass...

A few months ago, the G&L Facebook page reported a theft from their headquarters, where they've been known to keep Leo Fender historical memorabilia. Things like old g&l and fender ledgers, guitar parts, random stuff. I'll try to track down the Facebook post later, but can't find it on mobile.

So the other day, I came across a reverb.com listing for a g&l neck template. This seemed suspicious to me, so I sent a message to g&l via their fb page. They wrote back to me and confirmed that it was in fact stolen and that they've since added it to the police report.

I know that we've got some g&l fans in here, so if you see something odd, give them a heads up.
