Just realised that if I dig out my ipod AV cable, and plug my iphone into the telly with it, then via safari, I can do bbc iplayer without my PC. Wow.

well: the upgrade has seemingly bricked my phone spectacularly. iTunes refused to complete the upgrade with some bizarre and pointless "this phone cannot be upgraded" error and now sits there saying "waiting for iPhone" when i try again ...

... oh, woo, it's moved back to "preparing software for restore".

second time also unlucky. fuck me, this is annoying. not got time to go to the apple store today, either. wonderful: that's me without a phone for at least 24 hours :(

third time luckier, i think. it's "restoring music and videos" as i (angrily) type. more importantly, it seems to be back on the O2 network and i'm getting texts. hurrah: i have a phone again.

yet another bout of apple-installer-related misery, then. what i ended up doing was deleting the 2.0 .ipsw file (and the previous one) from my library, reconnecting the phone in restore mode, letting it download the update *again* and install it ... touch wood, that seems to have worked.

quite why it couldn't have worked the first time is a moot point.

Okay, I downloaded Midomi and "sang" Bring The Noize, Public Enemy style, all the way from Bass! to Terminator X and got Hannah Montana - The Other Side of Me (Remix) O_o

UPDATE: Nokia 6310i on Orange PAYG still working.

Midomi has been incredibly sucky for me; I sang the Chichester Psalms at it and it gave me a bunch of flamenco music.

last.fm wifi/3G only, according to that page at least. Still, nice to have two options for streaming personal radio stations - I've never used them before, due to mostly not working in front of a computer, but can imagine using them quite a lot now.

so why is my battery running flat a lot faster than it did before(100% -> 0% in about 8 1/2 hours). I havent been looking at too many apps, only two calls and no SMS? Is it AIM?

Yeh, apps are given warning before they're quit, and should use it to save state

# GPS. Haven't used it. Read a review that said it sucked, and one refuting it. It's not a huge deal for me since I don't own a car and you don't exactly need to be a rocket scientist to figure out which way is north in manhattan.
# Music. So it plays mp3s too....

I wish the last.fm app would allow scrobbling. I thought they'd get a wrist-slap for putting preferences in with the system, but it looks like that's allowed since the NYTimes app and AIM one do it. I haven't checked, but apparently the API doesn't have triggers for music data or something?

my brief experiences so far: shazam failed on the VERY FIRST HURDLE, ie "on me not in me" by earl brutus. but it knew "navyhead" and it got "lose him" by i start counting, so tick tick pretty good. martin galway's "ocean loader" confused the shit out of it; it redeemed itself by being able to differentiate between different recordings of "senses" by new order.
