i'm pretty sure I read maguire-raimi-dunst (lol anyone remember her?) are a unified front, so ditching the director in love with old timey characters and dance sequences while keeping the star probably wasn't an option

dunst (lol anyone remember her?)

the vulture was really the sticking point for raimi - he acquiesed to studio demands for spiderman 3 (he wanted the lizard, they wanted venom) and the result was some phoned in crap - da croupier is dumb as hell and a queerly-to-bed, queerly-to-rise cockhound, the vulture owns, malkovich owns, would've been awesome

hey, don't get s-banned on my account - i trust raimi, i'm just saying i can see why sony didn't

on the one hand this is retarded, on the other, ten years is a pretty long time. to the 14-year-olds of 2012, a *really* long time.

I imagine most of the 14 year-olds of 2012 who are into this kind of thing will have checked out the first one. There really is no artistic justification for a reboot (unlike Batman or Bond).

BTW, I'm frightfully middle-class (chap), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

would it blow your mind if i said the primary motivation behind the spider-man franchise was not artistic?

I realise I might be being a bit idealistic here (smiley face).

I'm feeling pretty heartbroken about it, but I know that my kid (who will be 8 when the movie comes out) is already familiar with a few other versions of the Spider-Man story, and will probably happily eat up some other permutation, as long as it's not pure crap, and maybe even then.

one rumor is they're courting James Cameron (who wanted to do this pre-Raimi), who could blast all artistic concerns away with 3-d webslinging.

but then 2012 seems awfully soon for the next cameron pic

no need for any more films about characters over 30.

I don't see what's wrong with a reboot. Maguire as Spidey is a lot less interesting after all the crap we had to watch last time. Raimi also went WAYYYY overbudget on the last one, and we ended up with an awful movie.

Anyway, I vote Cronenberg!

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh I always thought Maguire was horribly miscast myself

oh man Cronenberg would have a field day with all the body issues and gooey substances and transformations/mutations - MAKE IT SO

Marc Webb, the (500) Days Of Summer director, has climbed to the top of the Sony Pictures' list to rebirth the Spider-Man franchise. While the studio has a wish list of star directors like James Cameron, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson, the emergence of Webb as director comes as a huge surprise. But Mike Fleming's sources tell him Webb met about the Spidey reboot with the pic's producers and executives looking to get the picture into production later this year for a Summer 2012 release. Why will the pic take so long? Because it's likely to be shot in 3-D, and Sony Pictures plans to make an announcement about that "at the appropriate time".

I probably would have seen Anderson or Fincher's take on tween spidey. But no surprise at them going for a guy who will likely give them everything they ask for on the thing.

Static shots & slo-mo capture the thrill of webslinging quite adequately I'd say. (xpost)
