a gruff but kind-hearted badger in an english children's fable (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 00:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't know if anything bangs (as in BANG!) as hard as the first two until "fiya" but there are some other great tunes.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 11 January 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it's not bad at all! 'fiya' starts in like 10 seconds so

a gruff but kind-hearted badger in an english children's fable (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 00:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i oughta listen to the st vincent album

samosa gibreel, Monday, 11 January 2010 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

with haste. and bearing in mind that the first 7 tracks are without exception booming

a gruff but kind-hearted badger in an english children's fable (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 00:39 (fourteen years ago) link

ok re: 'fiya' was gonna say 'a bit too graceland for me' but the last two minutes are rectifying issues (even though things have gotten even more graceland...hmm)

still not quite...there imo, although this will get further chances

a gruff but kind-hearted badger in an english children's fable (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link

"Hatari" is my favourite.

Megadeth Panel (Ówen P.), Monday, 11 January 2010 03:49 (fourteen years ago) link

If this is scaring ppl off because it's too dissonant and challenging then I just don't know what... :\ Does the rest of the album get a little more adventurous than the vid above or?

Miss Bannister (╓abies), Monday, 11 January 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

it does. that's about as simple as the album gets

Inspiration for the sex robot sprang from the September 11 attacks (acoleuthic), Monday, 11 January 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Blergh sorry, not meaning to open up some who-has-edgier-taste contest er nothin.

xpost, ah ok. I'll need to get my hands on it some time.

Miss Bannister (╓abies), Monday, 11 January 2010 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

this is the opening track, 3rd best imo, also maybe the most confrontational/experimental

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 22 January 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

how do you "mix" with a minidisc??

New Micachu?

mmmm, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

there's a live album last year

ILX you're fucking useless

anyway, this week's avid splurge (which was mooted for Ulver's 60's psych covers album - that can wait though) concerns Micachu's second album, which is better than the first one, and boasts an array of wonderful little songs (well, Easy, Waste Sick, OK, Holiday (especially Holiday) and Nothing are all prime LJnip) as well as a thematic and musical coherence that hasn't been so much in evidence

here it is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2012/jul/17/micachu-shapes-never-album-stream

so if you don't have some tasteful indie-house to listen to...

lots of people here just don't do micachu y'know?

gonna give it a whizz shortly

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:11 (ten years ago) link

i think the abrasiveness of her first record scared people off basically

shame cos the amount of raw invention on that thing was amazing

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

also, quite a low profile since then really?

Papa Roachford (NickB), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

her second record was even better than jewellery and you only have to look upthread to see how much ILX cared

veneer timber (imago), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

anyway that song I just posted is square in the Venn intersection of me & the shit you generally find at the top end of the ILM trax poll. mandatory listening

veneer timber (imago), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:17 (ten years ago) link

I was so loud in my love for Jewellery that I kind of shut up after it seemed like I was alone in it
And I liked her second record less than the first (though def liked it a lot)

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:17 (ten years ago) link

i still jam 'golden phone' but haven't listened much otherwise, will try some more now perhaps

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:18 (ten years ago) link

It was for a while my favourite record ever and it's still way way up there, I listen to it a lot. She's also a great DJ

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

these two songs are yoga jams 4alltime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_vh6Gjdhyo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6pSU7ug0JE

love the aesthetic of her videos. every single track on the album has one. possibly the best way to experience the album

veneer timber (imago), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:20 (ten years ago) link

whole-album video stream:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5FCF8E26A1A4B2A4&feature=edit_ok

it's all wondrous but if anything the second half is stronger, bear in mind

veneer timber (imago), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:42 (ten years ago) link

nah listening again the whole thing is complete brilliance.

anyway, the song upthread. get to it.

veneer timber (imago), Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:58 (ten years ago) link

As of right now, Never is the one album from last year I most regret sleeping on

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 21 November 2013 19:54 (ten years ago) link

The Tirzah EP is my favorite 10 or so minutes of music this year. a little more direct and pop-focused than some of the Micachu stuff with vocals that are more approachable. still plenty weird. here are some links so you can check it out.

nine months pass...

ilx has form when it comes to trashing any sort of genuine art-pop

micachu obv >>> pc music in terms of compositional ability, but the battle lines are consistent and clear

this place is utterly stupefying sometimes

so so so so so so happy Micah is getting recognition she deserves

but hope she keeps making pop music and doesn't go full Zimmer

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 17:08 (nine years ago) link

i'm just gonna do a lazy-journo categorisation thing w/this chick and throw her in with the rest of this era's pestilent Quirky Girls who think wearing bright colours and singing like a toddler are substitutes for talent

rae sredrum (imago), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 17:23 (nine years ago) link

not that we didn't all say stupid things about music five years ago (ahem) but this attitude from the ongoing Campaign For Real Pop ensures that my work here is never done

rae sredrum (imago), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 17:29 (nine years ago) link

not that into her pop music but i hope she releases more dance music & beats like she played on her Boiler Room set, for instance:

I don't know how often I screamed this or if it was often enough but the Micachu mixtape from only two months ago is prettttty much the best thing in the world.

my booty it clean (fgti), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 18:25 (nine years ago) link

It is called "Feeling romantic, feeling tropical, feeling ill" iirc it is 53 minutes long and never stops serving aces

my booty it clean (fgti), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 18:25 (nine years ago) link

i really loved her under the skin score! would never have guessed. her early work itt is still pestilential

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 January 2015 18:28 (nine years ago) link

i wanted to hear that tape, couldn't find a legit digital version anywhere though.

virtuoso thigh slapper (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 January 2015 18:30 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I heard the whole thing! It's really good. Much closer to Never than GSHB on quality. Will enjoy relistening

Chip-vill-A (imago), Friday, 16 October 2020 14:48 (three years ago) link

Title-track especially stunning

Chip-vill-A (imago), Friday, 16 October 2020 18:03 (three years ago) link

title track was a definite highlight, "bubble" and especially "universal" were my other faves.

covidiot wind, blowin every time you lift your mask (voodoo chili), Friday, 16 October 2020 18:05 (three years ago) link

This has a shout at being their best album. Earphones have really brought it to something special

Chip-vill-A (imago), Friday, 16 October 2020 18:09 (three years ago) link

Whole second half is incredible

Chip-vill-A (imago), Friday, 16 October 2020 18:21 (three years ago) link

i really like the opener, im a sucker for that mac demarco lazy strummed detuned wet guitar sound

i haven't listened to any micachu music since the debut so idk if her singing style changed, but i like the singer on this better (even if she's a bit unremarkable)

it's cool that an artist with a reputation for being an avant-garde genius made a low-stakes post punk album w her friends; makes me miss playing in dumb short-lived bands w my pals :')

flopson, Sunday, 18 October 2020 00:32 (three years ago) link

"shades" is trippy for sure

flopson, Sunday, 18 October 2020 00:54 (three years ago) link

God it's so good. Reminds me of The The in places ('Bubble' especially).

tangenttangent, Thursday, 22 October 2020 09:29 (three years ago) link

four weeks pass...

Totally obsessed with this record, "Bubble" and "Star" are the standouts for me
