i don't really smoke, um, stuff that much any more (though i've been enjoying the occasional puff more lately than i have in years. mainly cuz i really like where i am now and i feel settled in a good way and less manic/frantic/bummed out and this helps me enjoy lots of things more.), but last night i did, and i gotta tell ya, my pick for stoned album of the week is that kathy smith album i was playing last night. this one:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_A5B16986tsA/Stlz2RKhTnI/AAAAAAAAFA8/tlOD91ccw8U/s400/smith_kathy_somesongs_101b.jpg

i mean, wow, what a ride. and the production and sound on it. jeez louise, just stunning. i didn't even know that my speakers were capable of transmitting sounds like that.

scott seward, Thursday, 7 January 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

On the table last night, a record I found in my stacks which I totally forgot I own: Milking The Masters, Vol. 7 by Blue Movie. 1987, produced by Klaus Fluoride of DK's. Violent Femmes-y (at times) trio with a stand-up drummer. I was fascinated with stand-up drummers at one point in the 80s, which may be why I bought it. Or maybe I got it as a promo, dunno?

That led to punkrock ukulele player Carmaig DeForest's I Shall Released. Same year, same label (Good Foot); produced by Alex Chilton, and I was reading that Chilton story linked in another thread.

Finished the night with a bootleg of Violent Femmes final show ever, but that was on CD.

^^ I had this for years before I looked inside of the jacket, love it when 70s album covers go that extra little step

I am STILL listening to the M Squared box set! 1st LP (Scattered Order) was good but not great on 1st listen, the Patrick Gibson/Systematics LP was a letdown given how great the Systematics records are. Side 1 of the Makers Of The Dead(...) LP was more of a letdown, but it picked up with side 2. The Cloakroom Assembly (now playing) is WAY better, creepy creative instrumental synth dinkiness of the highest order. One more to go, a various artists LP.

i have a nice riverboat copy too. dr. demento helped to put that out, right? i should play that one soon. haven't heard it in years. i'm not a fahey fanatic, but whenever i hear him its always a good thing.

is the second album good? i heard a little of it, and it sounded like it lost the hootenanny vibe of the first one that i liked so much...

controversial favorite LK album

69, Friday, 8 January 2010 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

The second album is really good. And live they're stellar. Catchy, somewhat somber/sentimental songs for acoustic guitars & two voices. I really like it.
