i was talking about tonite show the album, dj fresh's solo record. hearing dude producing for kool g rap is interesting in a <del>comic book</del> rap nerd when-universes-collide way but its not actually great music

messy marv w/ dj fresh is pretty cool, but its way short

j stalin mixtape w fresh was called 'the real world 2' & real world 1 from a few years back is good too

but really, is anyone being talked about on this thread right now up there with the "actual greats"?

dj fresh does a series of tapes w/ different rappers called "the tonite show" -- with young gully, messy marv, san quinn (zzz), D-Lo, etc

he also did a solo record that features highlights of his own, which is the only one that was an officially released album.

they're all produced by him

i think really what the problem is that while a lot of people like the tape & respect him as an artist and all, the amount of words spent on him on the internet - which is where a lot of us 'reside' when it comes to rap, talking about discourse here - except of course for deej who works with asylum/warner bros a&rs @ wrigley field if i'm not mistaken - really exceeds what he presents. the problem is that people nowadays - i'm sure i'm guilty of this as well, so not throwing stones - can't just talk about rap w/o talking about 'can this person be popular? why isn't he popular? shouldn't he be more popular? shouldn't he be as popular as this person? this is why major labels are fucked up' - etc. and when you have someone like freddie gibbs who was dropped from a major for - imo - obvious reasons, it's like "shut up jeff weiss, he is not the best cross section of biggie & pac and he was dropped for a good reason if you're trying to make money. just chill out"

To me, the thing about Gibbs is he's a good rapper being really into him is like being really into Black Thought. He's a totally competent but rarely novel rapper who has nothing to recommend over his peers.

good example of this is the little smooth rnb live guitar licks they put over the track on "Don't Front", reminds me of the old Stan the Guitar Man stuff on old Dre productions
