don't really understand the vituperation of your reply. is this one of these rap discussion on the internet things where everybody has to act like they hate each other yet keep coming back every day to the same people? i've seen that a lot in chatrooms and forums and it's pretty sadsack.

the narrative isn't a reason you should care, i'm just pointing out that it exists for each of these guys. not like say termanology releasing an indie single that the source picks up for unsigned hype that premo hears and they record "watch how it go down" which magazines check for in turn. that sort of buzz was still happening four years ago and maybe it isn't now.

"what backlash?" haven't seen any bad reviews, seen lots of good ones.

yeah i was suggesting that musical and "syncopation of his raps" (something funny about that phrase? you know, the rhythms and pitches of the words in relationship to the beat) are two reasons why i care. devin and z-ro are great, z-ro's record was probably top 3 of the year for me, but there's litle virtuoso "look what you did to me" style fast rapping on it, is that old hat and revisionist now? i don't hear anything retro in the gibbs productions so it's not a mausoleum for me. rae's was a mausoleum, bt something good done well is its own pleasure, i don't fiend for trends. anyway my note was a kind of sadness or frustration that rap fans like you weren't feeling something that i like so much so swallow your bile, eh?

i like sean price also.

deej posted that philty upthread, i don't like it much. yelawolf/bun b is also in here twice. it's not even a long thread.

@matt upthread: you're welcome!

zvookster, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

people have a weird habit here of posting the same youtubes more than once in the same thread, as if threads aren't hard enough to load for some of us with them being posted once. there's a maxwell thread where someone posted "pretty wings" like 8 times for some reason.

the tonite show album is hit or miss. the tracks with bay dudes tend to be great, tracks with non-bay dudes tend to not be. fresh is great, though he releases so much shit that you will find yourself hitting the skip button from time to time

theres a fair amount of genericism w/in the bay shit as far as rappers go (w/ some notable exceptions -- mob figaz & a couple of the guys from live wire, particularly j-stalin) but that stuff is more about being this alternate universe where rap & pop still intersect, just in a really insular universe. the further the rappers move from home the worse their shit tends to sound. jacka & freeway was zzz

the exception is i like how mob figaz sound with cormega -- hes a perfect fit for some reason. i think because there's a big NY influence in a lot of their shit, especially jacka's

I like 'rock day' (the one surfboards posted) ok but i think theres gonna be better stuff on that album when it leaks

frankly considering how generic clipse & gibbs & pill can sound id be shocked if this stuff was too generic for ppl

not a playa but i ilx a lot (deej), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago) link

the shit that freddie gibbs represents is not what i look for in new rappers

i don't disagree w/ surfboards re: gibbs — in fact i think he makes good points, some i've articulated before about gibbs/pill being the mirror images of rappers like the xxl freshmen that southern gangster rap fans like to mock - but surfboards did post about anticipating a triple c's album. so ymmv

re: shipley - i couldn't even imagine trying to load a goon/ringtone thread after like... march w/o bookmarking

re: yelawolf - a large reason why the album is great is because he can do so many styles well - his double time rapping is really good, but then he ends the tape with real melodic, soothing tracks where he sings just really well - i think everyone likes to throw out ugk as a reference point since they've kind of become an all encompassing touchstone for southern rap after their critical/commercial renaissance, but the singing on "love is not enough" really does remind me of that soulful singing that pimp c did

i think really what the problem is that while a lot of people like the tape & respect him as an artist and all, the amount of words spent on him on the internet - which is where a lot of us 'reside' when it comes to rap, talking about discourse here - except of course for deej who works with asylum/warner bros a&rs @ wrigley field if i'm not mistaken - really exceeds what he presents. the problem is that people nowadays - i'm sure i'm guilty of this as well, so not throwing stones - can't just talk about rap w/o talking about 'can this person be popular? why isn't he popular? shouldn't he be more popular? shouldn't he be as popular as this person? this is why major labels are fucked up' - etc. and when you have someone like freddie gibbs who was dropped from a major for - imo - obvious reasons, it's like "shut up jeff weiss, he is not the best cross section of biggie & pac and he was dropped for a good reason if you're trying to make money. just chill out"

total eclipse of the shart (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i guess i don't really go to the blogs or other rap boards or anything....my whole view of what's going on in rap is pretty much this thread haha....

to me dude is just some good, skilled meat and potatoes gangster shit and a good rapper...i can't really get that concerned about the "state of rap" anymore, just trying to find little nuggets of stuff that suits my tastes

surfboards is just biting our / noz's ahead-of-the-game sigh-ing about f gibbs. imo gibbs does stuff well, but it still feels removed & kinda pointless right now, an exercise in certain styles

duuude no way is that touching "Rock Day"! i caught myself genuinely daydreaming about/considering dealing drugs this morning after listening to that like five times in a row

the problem with this little axis isn't that their generic but between all of them there's like 7437484 street albums, mixtapes and retail CDs to wade through

re: double posting of nu-bay tracks...i believe we did this same thing but in reverse order in autogoon with Husalah "pray for you" but i didn't say anything cuz that track is fucking amazing

i was talking about tonite show the album, dj fresh's solo record. hearing dude producing for kool g rap is interesting in a <del>comic book</del> rap nerd when-universes-collide way but its not actually great music

messy marv w/ dj fresh is pretty cool, but its way short

okay, i'm raising the point again: J. STALIN IS A FUCKING AWFUL NAME FOR A RAPPER.

that said, i am enjoying reading and listening to the stuff on this thread.

dj fresh does a series of tapes w/ different rappers called "the tonite show" -- with young gully, messy marv, san quinn (zzz), D-Lo, etc

he also did a solo record that features highlights of his own, which is the only one that was an officially released album.

they're all produced by him

hahaha yeah i agree that NWA is way better than freddie gibbs.

also NWA is way better than every single artist that will be mentioned on this thread all year.

also, upthread table said j stalin is like calling yourself eazy hitler

To me, the thing about Gibbs is he's a good rapper being really into him is like being really into Black Thought. He's a totally competent but rarely novel rapper who has nothing to recommend over his peers.
