how about sasse, people?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 6 January 2010 08:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Sasse is probably a good bet.

Just for fun I decided to compare one year (2009) in Toronto vs. one weekend in Berlin. Taken only from Resident Advisor's listing pages, taking the appropriate names (techno, house, dubstep and the like DJ's, that I know of, and whom I've deem not bad enough to go out of my way to avoid - although I wouldn't give half of the Toronto names listed half a thought at best, many of them playing at atrocious clubs anyways).

Doubles and Resident DJ's are taken out.
Either way

TORONTO:

JD twitch (CANCELLED), Modeselektor, Sammy Dee and Frivolous, Dusty Kid, James Holden, Hercules and Love Affair, Marc Houle, Cari lekebusch, Tiefschwarz, Damian lazarus, Marcin czubala, Akufen (DJ), Mistress Barbara, Nick curly, Someone else, Radio slave, MANDY, Derrick May, Perc, Hugo, Mikael Stavostrand and Pheek and Jesse Somfay and Stefny, Abe Duque, Elon, Pablo Bolivar, Pat Mahoney & Andy Butler, Format: B, Loco Dice, Lusine and Tycho and SV4, Pilooski, Moderat, Alva Noto and Byetone, Mike Shannon and Adam Marshall, Joey Beltram, Stacey Pullen, Skream and Benga, Sian, Davide Squillace, Dan Bell, John Dahlback, Green Velvet, Joris Voorn, Runaway, Clive Henry & Gregor Tresher, Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills (at an irredemably crappy festival), Johnny D, Reboot, Daniel Steinberg, Stephan Bodzin, Speedy J Paul Kalkbrenner and Sascha Funke, Hobo, Dandy Jack & Jeff Milligan, Matt Tolfrey, Adam Beyer, Paul Ritch, Martyn (CANCELLED), Ernesto Ferreyra, Philip Bader, Guy Gerber, Caspa, Jimpster, Martinez, Luke Hess
Substance and Vainqueuer, Butch, Audion, Cassy (CANCELLED), Timo Maas, Simon Baker, Claude Von Stroke, Jeremy P Caulfield, Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts, Pier Bucci, The Mole, Alex Smoke

VS. Berlin in less than a 100th of that time:

haha. that is pretty funny. we're in a similar situation in sydney but i still feel like i go out quite a lot and see lots of good ppl. living in berlin would prob kill me.

two weeks pass...

how's horse meat disco? i'm definitely going, but just wanna know what to expect. full-on disco or what?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 28 January 2010 06:38 (fourteen years ago) link

funny living in berlin, it all becomes so passe... so much happens here it's impossible to get excited about even 1/10th of it, and shows that i would have jumped up and down at finding out about 3 years ago, these days i'm like "yeah it's only 5 subway stations away but i'm kinda tired" a lot of it is just me having checked out so much good stuff already and like, how many transcendent narcotic experiences on the dance floor can you have before it gets redundant? it's easy to go from all night club to all day afterhour to club again and stay out for 2 weeks while you completely lose touch with reality here, but now it feels like going through the motion for me. and i'd rather geek out in the studio and watch a movie with my girl...

with that said, Transmediale is under way, and i'll be seeing Charlemagne Palestine, Thomas Köner, Pan Sonic, Ryoji Ikeda, Brackles, Rustie, Deadbeat, Tikiman, ATOM tm. :)

What's a Joey Beltram DJ set like these days? He doesn't try to keep up with what the kids like too much, does he? I don't really want that

I googled Mike Watt. He doesn't sound that famous (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 14:42 (fourteen years ago) link

dixon?

i'm a fan but what type of stuff does he play out? is it worth the $20?? (fwiw i am a huge fan of 'temporary secretary' and his RA mix and 'the grandfather paradox', just wondering how well that style translates to a live dj set)

psychgawsple, Saturday, 6 February 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago) link

He was very good when I say him in Berlin, played a very broad range of house for about 6 or 7 hours - and we were grinning from ear to ear when he dropped West End Girls towards the end.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 6 February 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i saw him w/ame a while back and while i don't remember too well what he played, i thought he was very good. seeing him tonight with seth troxler!

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Saturday, 6 February 2010 21:11 (fourteen years ago) link

saw him in indonesia and he played obvious predictable hits! it's because of the uneducated crowd, though.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 7 February 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago) link

saw horse meat disco last night and i can only say it was tiring. played too many obvious tracks and the flow just wasn't errrmm flowing.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 7 February 2010 02:46 (fourteen years ago) link

pete herbert and MCDE?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 7 February 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

dixon played:
hot chip - one life stand (carl craig rmx) <-- sick!
armando - don't take it
cajmere - feelin' kinda high
dj koze - dr.fuck or mrs. bojangles
martyn - elden st (sebo k rmx)

and some pretty rude techno stuff.

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Monday, 8 February 2010 01:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i think MCDE would be really fun to see, esp with a good soundsystem

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 8 February 2010 14:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Saw Pete Herbert a couple of weeks back. He played plenty of deep discoy records (not a good descrip, sorry). He played Simian Mobile Disco's Cruel Intentions.

yeah anyone seen treasure fingers dj? his remixes are great, how's his djing?

Pole last night: very nice, very nice (didn't hurt that the sound was also very nice), but it was Barbara Preisinger's set after that really shook up my soda, so to speak.

hahaha, never heard any of his set so I didn't know if he's regarded that low.

what about richard sen (padded cell)?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 25 March 2010 07:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm just basing this on FdHC's music, and from what I can tell his tastes, if that's your thing he might be great, for all I know, he's definitely not my cup of tea, though.

Anyone seen/can comment on Soul Clap?

●●●●●●●● (EDB), Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I saw Felix DJ Centro-Fly during the height of Electroclash. It was pretty awesome. He played Our Darkness...

dan selzer, Thursday, 25 March 2010 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Felix's mix with Diddy last year was pretty incessantly banging. If that's his DJing style these days don't expect much downtime.

what do you think of this lineup? i'm only familiar with major lazer, and they're the reason i'm going. but i want to know about the others. thanks.

above and beyond
major lazer
spirit catcher (live)
rene amesz
chocolate puma

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 21 May 2010 10:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Above and Beyond are Paul Van Dyk with less cred. If that is hard to get your head around you should watch their NYE 2007 show in Rio on Youtube. I'm pretty sure I've seen Spirit Catcher but I couldn't tell you if they are any good.

mmmm, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

DJs I have seen in the past month that are absolutely worth seeing:

Justin Martin & Christian Martin (dirtybird)
Michael Mayer (duh)
Paco Osuna
Derrick Carter (DUH)
Nadastrom
Classixx
Deathface (Trouble & Bass)
Tim Sweeney (always liked his radio show, but he's a shockingly good live DJ!)
DJ Spen

I DIED, Friday, 11 June 2010 08:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Sweeney is so much better live than the radio show would suggest

joris voorn or juan maclean + tiga? (all dj sets)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 14 August 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

the latter. joris voorn is kind of a bore live, imo.

also, just a note: i didn't get to see Matias Aguayo that night in march. i was about to head over to the club when i got a call saying my house had been robbed. apparently, it was fucking awesome.

Ben UFO, #1 on my DJ wish list, is going to play in a neighboring country. To attend, I will have to spend approx. $250 (all in) and miss my cousin's engagement party. Worth it?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 16:40 (ten years ago) link

correction: $150

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 1 January 2014 17:54 (ten years ago) link

Sven vath, anyone? Tracklists of his sets didn't impress me though..

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 2 January 2014 15:08 (ten years ago) link

so are you going to see ben ufo or what?!?

the late great, Thursday, 2 January 2014 18:30 (ten years ago) link

Yes! Hope it's gonna be the best $150 I've ever spent.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 3 January 2014 00:03 (ten years ago) link

Ben UFO was disappointing. I didn't come to see a one dimensional techno DJ and that's what I got.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 13 January 2014 00:17 (ten years ago) link

sven vath or john talaobt?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 January 2014 08:18 (ten years ago) link

xp I've seen Ben UFO three times and it's been completely different each time - a boring time probably in that same one dimensional techno vein, a great time in the adventurous way you'd expect of him, and a really weird time when after hours of supports throwing out filthy dubstep he came on, cleared the floor with a couple of really skeletal tracks, then gave up and let someone else take over.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 24 January 2014 09:01 (ten years ago) link

Skeletal tracks? Such as..?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:05 (ten years ago) link

oh it was a few years ago, I don't really remember, but just stuff in the spare and rhythmically-oriented Hessle vibe, which didn't go down well with the teens who'd been enjoying buzzsaw synth lines.

Merdeyeux, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:11 (ten years ago) link

How is Carl Craig these days?

Murgatroid, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

i saw john talabot at a smaller outdoor daytime thing and he was perfect. not sure how he'd fair at indoor/at night, but i'd say go for it.

ended up seeing sven vath since I was late to see talabot. it was okay, but I didn't have any expectation anyway.
