i got a pair of off-brand ugg-like boots for christmas (a little more structure but same idea), my first reaction was that i would never buy those and my second was that they were REALLY comfortable. so i sort of see the appeal....
― Maria, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link
In the UK (at least) it was the tireless efforts of Kate Moss wearing them all the bloody time in 2005 which put them back into the shops, I think. She got great support in this from Coleen Rooney, which really helped them tap into the teenage girl market.
On a related note, current inexplicable trends round Manchester also include young women wearing pyjama bottoms out and about, often with Uggs, and having their hair done in styles similar to the mob wives from Goodfellas. Does the pyjama nonsense exist elsewhere?
― Bill A, Friday, 1 January 2010 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link
it existed in my high school among band geeks as an "i don't give a shit" statement, but that's about it as far as i know

Yeah, I thought it was a local aberration but a look at google yields gold:
PJs all the rage from Shanghai to Dublin...
― Bill A, Friday, 1 January 2010 23:08 (fourteen years ago) link
My parents came back with plenty of pyjama shots when they went to China. Their take was that being able to afford a splendid pair of pyjamas was a status symbol, so old guys would wear them out & about instead of just to bed.
Goodfellas was supposedly a microtrend a couple of years back in the New York area, but mostly for boys - I remember seeing a couple of photostories with kids all fake tan and wide-lapelled suits

my mom wants to buy a pair of uggs :( and now I have to trawl the internet looking for deals which will drop them below a benjamin

Yes, pyjamas thing is a thing. Have seen it v. occasionally here in Oxfordshire, but mainly in Belfast: at any time of day it's not wildly uncommon to see young(ish) women in pyjamas in the supermarket, and a friend reports that apparently they have a pair for home wear and a nice (warm?) pair to wear to the shops.
Or, much what the comments on that page say about Dublin.

dyao does your mom care if they are ugg brand or just ugg style boots? because you can find (sometimes cuter) knockoffs for like $25 easily.

man I never worried about ankle fatness until Ross accused Rachel of it on Friends and now phobia of such is an epidemic of vast enough proportions to get its own hideous footwear trend

Why do temporary signs say 'temporary sign' on them? It puts them on the back foot unnecessarily. See also: 'Polite Notice'.

So many Gü ramekins round this flat. They're pretty expensive at RRP but have been 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 quite often at Sainsbury's over the past year, which makes them a reasonable price.
― brett favre vs bernard fevre, fite (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 1 January 2010 12:23
they're really very good at 2 for 1! just got thru 2 lime cheescakes and will do well not to get thru the chocolate soufflé's as well
silly name tho, natürlich

Gü is fucking delicious. But I think I've only bought them for something like 90% off on the day of going out of date.
I appear to have lost my little ramekins though.
But I did keep that Robert Burns Coca Cola bottle after the drink surprisingly cost me something like £2.

Apparently Ugg (Ug?) boots were originally just a STYLE of boots made by many makers in Australia, and UGG has since fucked a lot of them over by successfully trademark suing them out of using the word Ug.
