Do you have really thick hair? Grey looks cool on ppl w/ super thick hair. Mine is stringy.

trying to decide which took longer - growing out the unfortunately layered "mullet" I got in junior high or growing out the last dye job, after I'd decided to let my hair be its natural color after almost 20 years of dying it.

xp - my hair is super thick.

If my hair goes white, I'm gonna go blonde.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 04:27 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm gonna look like terry gross when i get old because i don't have much of a choice. it's either tg or wigs.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

wigs can be awesome though.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

cutting your hair short is a trap because you become addicted to novelty and pretty soon no haircut is good enough and you have to keep cutting it until you have no hair left and then the only "novel" option is longer hair and then the wait is excruciating.

RE: washing, not washing

I define washing as shampooing, particularly with a sulfate shampoo. I have been using a lo-poo (no sulfates) around twice a week, conditioner washing (<<<<<<<<<---- key concept) about twice a week, rinsing with just water about once a week and not wetting at all once a week. I am also doing the growing-out thing and want the ancient hairs (once past shoulder length) to be healthy.

I had three gray hairs, pulled two out and left one in.

quincie, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 18:03 (fourteen years ago) link

xp - LoL at "truth bomb" - I've reconciled myself to the fact that if my hair is shorter than chin-length it makes my face look too long, and if it's significantly longer than chin-length I look like a female member of the Ramones.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 18:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't wash my hair yesterday but i did today. i switched to whole foods brand shampoo fyi

i think tea tree tingle was giving me dandruff, which seems backwards

welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Thursday, 24 December 2009 01:49 (fourteen years ago) link

y'all i have had like a million gray hairs so i really would not worry if i were you.
i like to wash my hair every day tbh. i can not do that, but i still need to wet/wash the bangs otherwise they look like a greasy stringy mess which is totally nagl w/ this weird tina fey bang cut shit. i am pretty into having long hair, though! after many moons of having a chin length angled bob!

i went no-poo for a year and a half (baking soda/water, twice a week, instead) but stopped out of a combination of laziness and the fear that it was making my hair go grey quicker. I don't know if it was a stressful life or I was just paying more attention but I kept finding whitehairs, started remembering that my grandmother's hair had gone white in her thirties, got a bit worried.

lords of hyrule (c sharp major), Monday, 28 December 2009 11:36 (fourteen years ago) link

that can't happen though!

welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Monday, 28 December 2009 16:03 (fourteen years ago) link

that no-poo sends you grey? it seemed unlikely, but i thought if I was getting all frettish about it I might as well stop.

fair enough

I don't think I've seen that Exclamation stuff since the early 90s - is it back? Has it consistently been around and I just haven't noticed it until now?

sarahel, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 07:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Are those various permutations of Love's Baby Soft on the left of the (!) stuff?

One time in junior high when we were on the band bus to a holiday parade in a neighboring town, one of the majorettes, a perky little popular gal, told me that she kept the rubber ends of her baton from smelling funny by soaking them in Love's Baby Soft. I remember being impressed by her ingenuity, her femininity, and her access to enough Love's Baby Soft to soak something in it.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 13:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I bought mom Exclamation gor Christmas-she lives the stuff! I think it's been kicking around all these years..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 16:44 (fourteen years ago) link

xp Jenny - yeah - Love's Baby Soft variants.

What did they smell like normally?

sarahel, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Love's Baby Soft? Or baton ends? Or Finefinemusic's mom?

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link

lol - the baton ends.

sarahel, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh. Many drug-addled years have past since my junior high band days so my memory is hazy, but I think they smelled like some kind of industrial, rubbery, chemical somethingorther of the sort that probably resulted in a high percentage of former majorettes developing various cancers later in life.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:36 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda like those black welcome mats?

sarahel, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know what those smell like, but that seems like it would be an apt comparison.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 29 December 2009 17:39 (fourteen years ago) link

they have a weird faux-rubber kinda chemical smell that smells a bit like some highly-artificial snack food that I can't identify because it's the kind of thing I'd see in the stores and think it looks really gross.

Editors at Scholastic updated some of the references to technology and outdated fashions in the reissued books. So a “cassette player” has become “headphones” and a “perm” has become “an expensive hairstyle.”

I hate when they do this. ( Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret, I am looking at you.)
