"minnesota nice" = passive-aggression + smiling and saying hello at strangers for no reason

I was in Minneapolis once and a deaf-mute guy in the mall-like gay barplex was convinced I went to high school with him.

in NC if you are driving through a residential area and see people walking, they will wave at you.

haha I've gotten so used to this that I usually wave to the pedestrians before they do me!

i like saying "hi" to people on the same trail as me while hiking.

its kind of like: "hello there fellow smart person. isn't it nice to be greeted by others who made the wise choice to spend this afternoon in nature?"

g®▲Ðұ, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

i always squint at people and purse my lips and point an index finger at them and spin around and keep pointing at them as they walk past me.

then i go to the store and buy a new bag of conjunctions.

^^^^ well duh. ditto people on the chairlift, which has the potential to be the most awkward situation imaginable: 2-3 people, often strangers, squished together on a slow moving chair for about 10 minutes. you sort of have to talk to each other.

river wolf, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Definitely. I've gotten better at the chairlift chat, though, in my old age. It used to scare me silly.

Laurel, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:31 (sixteen years ago) link

One time after like 7 days straight camping we came stomping out of the woods (not on the trail) back into the parking area all dirty and ragged and this family was just getting out of their car, we all waved and said hi, they kind of only-barely-politely nodded and did that hands-on-shoulders "hurry-along-now-kids!" thing towards the trail.

nickalicious, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Generally, though, I don't like people and I don't like making a social effort for strangers. :D Also I don't greet people unless I know them, but anything else is really impossible in the city.

haha my cousin's husband had a proposal all planned out at Navy Pier's ferris wheel in chicago, but they ended up having to share w/ a fat, drunk/ PDA-ing couple. he pussed out and proposed an hour later, at a quiet spot down the pier.

i used to play golf with my brother and i always hated it when we had to play with some other golfers, because we always ended up getting douches or crepes.

I like golf

JW, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

my summers during my college years back home are a haze of golf, pool, swimming, bbqs, cheap beer, cigarettes, weed, steely dan, allman bros, more golf, and garage jamz

félix pié, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I've still never played a game of golf. This guy I worked with and I used to go out to the Arnold Palmer Driving Range. We'd work on our shots while drinking out of a box of Franzia. It took me a long time to get to the point where the ball would actually go up in the air instead of skipping across the range like a flatrock in water. That was six or seven years ago, and I haven't held a driver since.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

left arm straight

félix pié, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Is it that, or is it having the club reach its lowest point just before it hits the ball? I think my problem may have been that I was trying to place the ball at my swing's 180 degree point, like I was putting.

Golf seems like a pain in the ass to get into anyway. It's expensive. It takes a little time management. And I still have a hard time getting past some of that golf culture that's out there.

There's another awkward social situation: Feeling rushed through the putt-putt course because there's a bad-ass power putt group breathing down your neck right behind you.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

yes those speed golfers suck.

oh and also keep your head down as you follow through, you pretty much don't want to look up from the ball until you've followed through. because looking up will cause you to pull back just a little and hit the top of the ball, causing it to be a ground ball right up the middle or more likely off to the left.

félix pié, Friday, 27 April 2007 23:50 (sixteen years ago) link

a way manners fucks up golfing for me:

it is kind of rude to NOT smoke w33d with your fellow golfers in hawaii. i'm such a lightweight that by the 3rd hole i'm slicing all over the fucking place.

-- jessie monster, Friday, 27 April 2007 17:13 (Yesterday)

wait, does this actually seriously freak people out? I thought it was just a normal thing that happened everywhere! the only time I found it even slightly weird was when a dude on a riding mower waved to me while I was passing through Virgilina, but that was just because it's a town of 159 people and so he would obviously know that he had never seen me before.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 April 2007 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

well, judging by the responses, it is pretty normal in small communities. I have had out-of-town friends (lol big city peeps) be all "wtf is that old dude waving at you?" tho.
