While it's true that Rico's methods there were really badly thought out and inconsiderate, it's just another example of him going out of his way to get MORE responsibility. When has Nate ever tried to do anything but dodge responsibility? The only time he ever accepts any is when he's guilted into it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:30 (eighteen years ago) link

separated...whatever!

Come on, Rico was a little fuck. His wife's having major depression issues, so he starts seeing a girl on the side? It took him long enough to really feel guilty about it, didn't it? And then, he played the big macho bullshit with her about it being "his house" and "his kids" and "I don't like you going out with other people" and all this bullshit. Nate would've never pulled that crap. And Nate would've acted like the little lying weasel to manipulate Vanessa back into his life like Rico did. Because Nate's "in touch" with his feelings, "bro."

gah, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not saying that's not bad stuff about Rico, but dude, Nate never pulled that stuff because the last thing he'd ever want is responsibility. However, trying to make Nate out to be even remotely honest, esp. about infidelity, is pretty rich!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I guess you missed the part about Rico having the latino machismo thing shoved directly up his ass. It's not about him wanting more responsibility, it's all about what a man should have. And a man should be the boss of his wife and the king of the castle even if he fucked up and she doesn't want him there. I suppose you think that bullshit about Rico flipping out on Nate for his innocent comment about the latino family going broke on an expensive casket was not totally uncalled for. Hey, guess what? Nate was trying to help a poor family out! Rico was trying to sell them the most expensive shit he could because "We're latino's, we don't go broke. Every person pitches in at times like these."

Heyah, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, let's look at Rico's relationship with the stripper - he meets her, and gets a blowjob. He feels weird about, so he strikes up a friendship. Before too long, he's supporting her financially and giving her help with her kid and playing a sugar daddy sort of role. All the while, he is not having any kind of sexual relationship. He only fucks her after Vanessa finds out and he freaks out. Rico's idea of an affair is taking on more responsibility!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

See last comment. Rico is a little fucking boy trying to be big latino man. He liked his ego stroked by the stripper and that is why he took care of her and then she was all he had after Vanessa left him.

I disagree about the stripper, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, Rico is also the only partner trying to keep the business afloat - Nate's too prissy and selfrighteous to entertain the notion that selling product doesn't have to be a bad or manipulative thing, especially if the customer WANTS the high end products. From Nate's point of view, he was trying to be nice, but really he was just being very condescending and very white-privileged-liberal, and Rico was totally in the right to snap at him. Nate doesn't have to worry about money, but Rico does. Nate doesn't have to worry about the future of the company, or its place in the community, but Rico does.

My friend and I were talking about Rico the other night, and it's kinda icky how virtually all of Rico's major flaws seem to be attributed to his culture and upbringing. But then again, a lot of the best things about him happen to be in contrast to the liberal white privelege of the Fishers.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:43 (eighteen years ago) link

you guys.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Nope, they've done that plenty of times on the show before where they've showed them offering cheap options. You're right: David and Nate aren't comfortable about the business and seem to be more concerned about the families, whereas Rico constantly jokes about the dead people and the money!

Oh yeah! Did you forget that? Rico doesn't seem to give a shit about the people. What about the scene with Nate's first fuck lying on the mortuary table and Rico says, "How's she holding up?" to Nate? Cool?

The way the latino casket scene happened, it just sounded like Nate was saying, "Jesus, the regular expensive casket wasn't good enough, you had to charge them an extra $300 to switch the handles?" Remember, Nate didn't know what the fuck they were saying because they were speaking Spanish, so how does he know Rico isn't just trying to sell them the most expensive stuff?

Rico totally turned it around in an instant. It's hard to tell from a script, but the way the scene was acted, it just sounded like Nate was mindlessly responding without really thinking about what race the people were. His comment was directed more toward the fact that everything was the best of the best. "We take care of our family" "Yeah and go broke doing it" ... same shit I've heard in a dozen other circumstances. It's just a comment about wasting money, not about how poor latinos are.

I disagree about the casket options, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I like how white people always play the "That wasn't racist, it was just really assholish!" card.

I like how white people always play the "That wasn't racist, it was just really assholish!" card.

That wasn't the card I was playing at all because I don't think Nate was being assholish in the least. Just Rico.

Or perhaps you have never heard the following:

"A car in the city? You'll go broke on parking alone... or parking tickets!"

"Can't smoke anymore, you'll go broke."

Ghost of Dan Perry's Brain (which is dead), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

But I do love it when people play the "playing the card" card. So transparently manipulative.

two months pass...
I just finished watching the last episode. I'm not sure if the ending was great or trite...probably the latter. I'm really going to miss this show though. The first two seasons are probably the best thing that has ever been shown on tv. And I dont think I've ever cared as much for charachters on tv as the ones on this show.

Fuck you Alan Ball for cancelling the show! Could you perhaps consider a spin off with Olivier and Brenda's mom?

Poor, poor Showtime. Everything they put on seems like the retarded cousin of HBO's original series.

sixteen years pass...

Whenever you get tired of the principals (something I could say of almost everyone at one point or another except maybe David), there's always Patricia Clarkson, Kathy Bates, Joanna Cassidy, and Catherine O'Hara having the time of their lives.

Some debate over the art-school stuff above. For me, the worst--it's a parody of a parody, a meta-parody of how movies fun of art school. Much of it is spouted by Olivier: worse even than the cocktail chatter in Woody Allen's Manhattan. (If it's accurate, so be it--doesn't make it any less horrifying, just makes me glad I never went to art school.)

clemenza, Sunday, 10 October 2021 23:58 (two years ago) link

The first time I watched it through I was studying for a mixed arts-style undergraduate degree and the art school stuff - Claire and Russell's self-important disaffectedness, Jimmy's on-the-nose pseudo-celebrity, the cocaine photo exhibition...that all felt very otm. Hideous, but accurate.

I guess I got a bit of that taking a film degree in the early '80s, but not nearly as over-the-top (and, except for one course, we were studying films, not making them).
