ken c, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I just get thrown back to the login page time after time. :(

Raw Patrick, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:12 (sixteen years ago) link

No I really was doing it right... its working now. Weird.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh noes it is broken :( Who is this mysterious individual who has poked me? Sigh.

-- kv_nol, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:59 (Tuesday, 2 October 2007 08:59)

Accentmonkey, was there one person you added and all this stuff followed on? I had that and am thinking of quietly telling them irl that I think they're great but I'm letting them go because I'm sick of people going: "Oh here's x, oh and there's y. Let's add them both."

kv_nol, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I added my first bf who i havent seenin 15 years and now I kind of regret it... he's just so different to me now it is weirding me the fuck out.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Then un-add him. No need for drama, he won't be hurt. You can also put him on limited profile and reduce the amount of news you get from him.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 09:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Eh, its no big deal. Ive added a heap of ppl I never engage with. Its not like I do anything deadly important on FB :)

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, how do I limit the news I get from people? Cos I'm really fuckin sick of getting status updates from school menks every ten seconds going "IS WISHING THAT CERTAIN PPL WOULD JUST BE HONEST GOD MEN ARE SO STUPID"

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:10 (sixteen years ago) link

the top right of your news feed there is 'preferences' - click on that and there are a bunch of dials you can adjust. just turn them all down and you'll get no news at all.

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Chrz!

That mong guy that's shit, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

if only there was a dial you could turn down on all the stupid apps. wtf is the point of being a ninja, werewolf or vampire? why would i want to come to an imaginary happy hour?

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I just ignore most of em.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Tho I have scrab, sudoku and astrolgy/tarot apps... and i like the ask a question thing, thats created some amusing creativity from friends. My latest question is "lads: are you impressed by a girl who can out-belch you?"

Only my ex has answered it so far though :(

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 10:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I would be, Trayce!

I removed the Ask A Question app because it seemed to have asked questions automatically for me, which was annoying.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I removed it because I couldn't find a way to get it to stop emailing me every time one of my FB friends asked a question, and even now I keep getting noitifications in FB to tell me that so-and-so has asked a question. I'm sick of it.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I think you can turn some of that off... people are nongs and leave everyone ticked when they ask a q'n.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:09 (sixteen years ago) link

ken c has asked a question "shall i turn the notifications for ask a question off"

ken c, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 11:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I have been avoiding Facebook because a) it annoyed me by being students-only when I wasn't a student, b) assumed myspacesque "who can win most friends by how hot their pouting emo teenage bathroom mirror photo is" competition reasons, and c) it seems kind of OLD now and if I can't be an early adopter then I don't want to know etc, but last weekend I met some people I hadn't seen in ages and would kind of like to see again, and they asked if I was on it, and joining up now to say hi seems marginally less creepy than trying to google up an email address, maybe.

This makes me very depressed. A lot of old friends are on Facebook and it hurts to see them all still friends, while I have been forgotten

Oh God, I find livejournal super-depressing for this reason so maybe I should be happy with not getting to spy on their Facebooks. Everyone I ever knew or thought seemed interesting even though they were too cool to talk to me from like 4 or 5 separate groups of long-lost friends is now in the same LJ friend circle (and there was me trying not to mix a couple of the groups when I knew them under the assumption that they wouldn't get on).

Meanwhile I don't see any of them except some of the too-cool types from a distance and one once-friend I bump into maybe twice a year who gives me that busy "oh yeah, I used to know you, but I have much better stuff happening in my life now" vibe each time. Then again maybe she would be nice and chatty except she thinks I'm giving off that vibe too? Arghs etc.

dude pouting bathroom mirror photos are GRATE!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 12:08 (sixteen years ago) link

ken c, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 12:31 (sixteen years ago) link

ken c, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link

* After the maintenance is over, you will still be able to login with the same password
* Your profile and account will not be affected by the maintenance
* There is no need to notify Facebook of the site maintenance. We're the ones doing the work, so if you see this notice, it means that we're already aware of the issue.
* We don't do site maintenance on all accounts at the same time, so it is possible that some of your friends will be able to access the site while your account is unavailable.

stevie, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 12:35 (sixteen years ago) link

fucking hell, phd supervisor has friended a mutual friend.

this shit is wrong.

but it's too late to block him now. i just hope he has the good sense and tact not to friend me.

there is a time for earnest academic discussion of bullshit old movies no-one cares about, and there is a place for mondeo pop and... they're not in the same place.

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm too shy and scared of rejection for facebook.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm too easily swayed by peer pressure *not* to be on Facebook

Forest Pines Mk2, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i'd totally reject you ned trifle ii as we had never met

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:26 (sixteen years ago) link

although sometimes i make exceptions so you may get lucky

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i think this glimmer of hope of becoming my facebook friend should be enough for you to join.

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:28 (sixteen years ago) link

but it's too late to block him now. i just hope he has the good sense and tact not to friend me.

You can let him see just a limited profile. Check your privacy settings...

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:38 (sixteen years ago) link

or just not accept his friending

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 10:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Stone cold rejection is an option, yes. Perhaps not the politest mind!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm figuring out what to do in this situation. The person tries to get you to befriend them, and you choose ignore. Then you see them in real life and they go 'hey! You didn't befriend me!' and you act all confused and say 'oh, sorry, some spammer was trying to befriend me last week, I must have hit the wrong button. Send the request again.'

If they never say anything, you never have to worry.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm already in it ken and, of course, it is your rejection I fear the most.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:16 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost instead of rejecting per se i've currently left about 10 requests in limbo.

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:21 (sixteen years ago) link

it was just that the last time i rejected somebody, they came back with a request again - so if i leave everything in limbo at least i won't get another notification that i don't need if they do.

it's getting increasingly annoying having 10 friend requests pending though so maybe i should actually just reject it all.

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish there was an "abjure" option. I just really like that word.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:27 (sixteen years ago) link

this has just appeared:

"My Band

Are YOU in a band? Promote it on your Facebook Page w/ MyBand!"

...is this the killer blow to myspace???

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:41 (sixteen years ago) link

i thought my band has been there for ages! i looked it up because i wanted to make a similar application myself. but it seems to have like 10 people using it to last time i looked.

ken c, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:47 (sixteen years ago) link

The 'Friend Groups' thing that Facebook are supposed to be launching rsn could solve some of your problems, accentmonkey. You can friend someone, and then add them to the group "wish I hadn't friended this person", where they never see your updates and you don't see theirs.

Ray, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, that sounds like exactly what I want.

I heard an awful tale at lunch today. One of my colleagues missed someone's wedding coz they had sent out the invitations via facebook rather than in the traditional way.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 18 October 2007 15:18 (sixteen years ago) link

wtf i've just been added by an extremely hot girl, i check her profile and a) there is no information except the basic 'interested in, relationship status, DOB, hometown' shizzle at the top, and b) i am, at time of writing, her only friend.

is this some sort of joke? does dom really have that much spare time?
