It is pretty great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 November 2006 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm game, dar1a, help me -- why are things the way they are, and how did you figure it out?

I figured it out by seeing the political landscape I knew changed forever in November '80. And it's not coming back.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 16:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I thank Allah every day for internets.

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

what was the landscape you "knew" Morbs? certainly it couldn't have been the one in which no even moderately progressive political figure won the Presidency without a) the benefit of a national tragedy, b) a huge personality cult at least somewhat divorced from ideology, or c) warmongering, and in which no progressive control of the Congress existed without the benefits of a lingering party identification with racists, right? the landscape "changed forever" when progressives got a hell of a lot of the things they wanted.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, to heck with that being here, new thread time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Meantime.

As the canvassing continues in Virginia, Sen. George Allen, R-Virginia, is sequestered in his home, "shell shocked," and going through "a nightmare," during this period of limbo, a senior Allen staffer tells CNN.

In a conference call with his senate staff and regional representatives Wednesday afternoon, the Virginia senator "didn't concede but he was clearly not emboldened to fight this," according to the staffer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

jhoshea, stence:

thank you. the last two and a half hours of my life were some of the worst in recent memory.

3 pm EST

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, he's done - 3pm. I almost feel sorry for the poor guy.
his constituents did him a favor, otherwise he'd have continued to go through life thinking it was a-ok and sort of funny to be a racist thug

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I almost feel sorry for the poor guy.

Lord, I don't. I hope he and Santorum show up in the Senate smashed out of their minds sometime over the next couple of months.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't work up too much sympathy for racist frat boys. Buh-bye, macaca.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

macaca's lost weekend: from senate shoe-in and presidential hopeful to unemployed in a season.

yay!

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

and he managed to pick up an nickname that exemplified his failure!

jhoshea megafauna (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

But now I can't stop saying macaca, it's worrisome.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Allen prob about to crawl into a bottle of Jack Daniels, true.

Allen, who once famously advocated beating Democrats by "knocking their soft teeth down their whining throats,"

Oh well. Toughski shitski, macaca..

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:59 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost - Yeah, I can't stop either. that is some serious karma right there - calling some dude a racist slur and guess who gets to wear it for the rest of his life, eh?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost to Mr. DLC

The landscape I "knew" was one where the Ford Administration actually increased the non-Defense budget in real dollars, the government funded the arts at more than piddling levels, Republican presidents didn't see anything wrong with taxing the richest at a mega rate, etc.

(also I have no problem w/ your A & B conditions, I'll take what I can get)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 18:07 (sixteen years ago) link
