So do you just get a certain amount of souls and then head back and spend them when you're grinding the first level? I don't quite get it. Can you bank the souls in the nexus?

Don't sweat it too much, you'll figure it out. I don't want to ruin it; just fight your way past the phalanx and nose around a little and it'll be evident soon enough.
Bear in mind that i think it took me ten hours to beat the first level.

but one thing you should know is there is no banking of souls, like ever.
use em or lose em or find your corpse or get the hero soul rocks but that's it.

I'm keeping all my heros souls for a that thing that allows you to teleport back to the nexus, souls intact. that's gonna be a better day than Christmas when i get that beauty.

I think I might have figured this game out! So you die 5000 times and each time you die you get a little bit better at the game, right? And then by the time you die of old age in real life you're good at the game.

sub "die of old age" for "in-game hour 20" and you got it.

Why can I only reliably backstab sucky guys? I get enough of that in real life

I have a secret weapon -- I do not expect to be any good at this game at all, so any success I have will be a delightful surprise.

The despair set in when my PS3 drive broke the day the servers went pure white WT, and I have about 2 weeks of prime Demons souls playing time till my GF & the baby come back from holiday and the machine wont recognise discs....

the only thing worse than playing Demon's Souls is not playing Demon's souls

coincidentally am reminiscing with a friend who picked this back up recently and is burning through some of the later stages. so many golden memories. would love to play again but the torment is still so fresh in my mind that just thinking about it gives me the Fear.

Dying sucks. Im also having a hard time figuring out just wtf is going on in the menus. I spent a bunch of souls on some shield I cant even use because I didnt understand the notations.

now look at yourself at two in the morning, when an end of level boss pounds you and you have to walk through the entire level again...YOU CRIED

So I beat this on accident earlier today. I killed the boss with minimal effort when it just sat there when I shot it with like 15 fireballs..

yeah, the end guy is an odd cakewalk; especially when compared to some of the other final bosses.

just got added to the Greatest Hits lineup, anyone who has $30 and passes on this deal is a butt

I actually didn't die that much! I may even still be in the single digits. I'm using a Thief, playing slowly + cautiously, and making sure to take some time blocking and watching enemies to figure out attack patterns. After that it's just been a matter of using the right weapon (I have a scimitar for soft things and a mail breaker for hard things) and counter, stab, Bob's your uncle (and is also dead). Groups can be a pain, though, and that first boss (the big writhing fuckpile of shield-spear-blob-things) is a GOD. DAMN. ASSHOLE. It doesn't help that I wasted all my firebombs on my first attempt and I'm too lazy to grind up a bajillion more souls so I can buy more.
