Kenan now has the artwork for his electronica project.

Any ideas for something fun to do tonight?

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Fun and cheap?

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm thinking of going to free Thursday at the Art Institute and checking out the Jeff Wall exhibition before it's gone. But you guys saw it in NYC, right?

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

stay home, open the windows, feel the cool night air as you snuggle under a blanket and watch TV.

kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

No,E. That looks good!

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

better than snuggling, though? Be honest.

kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

The problem is that we're still getting used to this new routine of not having band practice a couple times during the week. Also, I've had this dumb cold. So basically we've been homebodies all week.

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

If you guys want to meet up, name a time that's good -- I think the museum's free anytime after 5 and open 'til 8.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Art Institute is free on Thursdays now?

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:07 (sixteen years ago) link

And why no band practice?

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Ben is on a design project team. He had to apply to get in, and it lasts until next summer I believe. So, he's working full time and going to this other thing in the evenings during the week. Thus, he can't play shows or practice during the week any more.

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

This means we only practice on Sundays. Once a week is probably the norm for most bands but we're used to 2-3.

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, we do two three-hour practices, so I feel ya.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

There's also an exhibition (closing this weekend) of communal poems from Japan, basically the kind of thing we all do in bars:

BUTTERED BUNS (2): ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

Good for Party magazine and Mr. Peabody Records present....

Buttered Buns 2: Electric Boogaloo

In the world of rare vinyl, DJ's Mike Cole and Mark Grusane own the store....literally. Everyone else is just shopping in it.

Their record store, Mr. Peabody's, is the finest in Chicago, boasting a collection of rare vinyl that no one else in the city can touch. When your favorite international DJ's come to play, Mr. Peabody's is where they go to find obscure dancefloor vinyl no one else has. Everyone from Dimitri from Paris to Kool Herc has bought from Mr. Peabody's.

Playing Sonotheque for the first time ever, Mike and Mark open their vaults for a very special night of classic dance music and sexy bullshit. This is a rare, special treat that you music fans do not want to miss. They pack more heat than an oven door, tastefully folding rare disco, soul, funk, into New Wave, house, hip-hop and boogie. Listening to them play records is like being on a time traveling Be prepared to dance...hard.

Please rsvp to rsvp.goodforparty.com for reduced admission. Early arrival is strongly suggested.

9pm-2am
$10 cover after 10pm

jaymc: "unironic" or "un-ironic"?

Jordan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

This is like a Death Row Records meeting. You go and try to find them and then they jump you.

"a historian" or "an historian"?

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Webster's sez "unironic."

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Also how do you set off song titles? Quotes?

Jordan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

a historian?

Jordan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

song titles, quotes; albums, italics

kenan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

An album is like a book title (itals) and a song is like a poem (quotes) -- that's how I remember.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

cool, that's what i "thought"

Jordan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

With punctuation outside the quotation marks, because who would really respect one inside "I Walk The Line"?

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmmm. Askoxford.com is inconclusive:

The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'.

By contrast, words such as 'honour', 'heir' or 'hour' in which the 'h' sound is dropped are written with 'an'.

I think the BBC decided that it's "An Hotel", weirdly.

-- the next grozart, Tuesday, April 24, 2007 6:12 AM (4 months ago) Bookmark Link

There was another recent thread all about ans and as (what is the best way to write that, by the way, "an"s and "a"s?) and aspirated hs, Charlie. Can't rememeber what it was called.

I think "an historical" etc is widely deprecated, yes, though it seems to be one of those hypercorrective things that people do to try to sound right. I can't believe you really want to write "an hotel". Why?

in the same way an American might write "an herb" i suppose; or indeed in the same way i'd write "an honour".

Peaches and an Herb

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, we've been through this, because I posted "an" and a photo from WKRP sometime in 2006.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Hahah. Isn't the exception for "historical" done because of the word "ahistorical", meaning, not historical at all? That is what has been exlpained to me but I'm suspicious and stick with an.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Er, sorry, I meant to say that I stick with a.

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd never heard that, Laurel. And I'm not sure it holds up because you're more likely to pronounce the "a" in front of "historical" (and related words) as "uh": "uh historic moment," "uh historian of the Civil War."

xpost Good. I was about to say.

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Anna's an anorexic.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Ahistorical - you think this shit just dropped right out of the sky
My analysis: it's time to harvest the crust from your eyes
To surge and refine, to rage and define ourselves against your line
So sorry friend but you must resign
You want to figure it out we'll throw down, we'll throw down
Wou want to figure it out well throw down your bulldog front
Bold bold mouthtalking not so bold now that you've eaten your own
Lips flecked, mouthspecked you strip the skin right off of the bone
And I would never say you act without precision or care,
But it's all attention to armor, to the armor you wear so well
Let's knock and check to see if there's somebody home

dan m, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Re pronounciation of "a", I doubt "uh" is any more likely to be used before historic than any other word. I'm not up on my regional linguistics hallmarks, but isnt the ay/uh distinction partly geographic?

Laurel, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

WTF

MarryOurDaughter

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I doubt "uh" is any more likely to be used before historic than any other word.

Agree with you there. I'm unaware who actually pronounces "a" as "ay" in contexts other than wanting to emphasize the word.

The distinction between "thuh" and "thee" has to do with whether it's before a vowel or not, but "a" has already solved that with "an."

jaymc, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

oh wow

Marry Our Daughter is an introduction service assisting those following the Biblical tradition of arranging marriages for their Daughters.

dan m, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, I meant to mention this to John earlier, but there is this essay/review of a book about e-mail etiquette, and it talks about why exclamation marks are more common in e-mail than in other forms of writing.

Also for some reason I thought of John when I read about this book.

Eazy, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

ok holy shit @ marryourdaughter

Kyra likes the outdoors, more the open air of the beach or the desert than the woods. She would love to live somewhere away from it all. She is bright and funny and full of life and while she has little direct experience with the opposite sex we have made sure she is aware of everything she needs to know to be a good wife and mother.

river wolf, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Kristin has a wild streak. She likes parties and has spent more time with boys than we’d have liked her to. We had a family talk and decided that it was time she settled down with a man who could meet her needs and help her fulfill her dreams of being an actor or singer. She’s a bit fiery but worth it.

river wolf, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Is that "Marry Our Daughter" thing a joke? It has to be, right?!
