From IMdB trivia page:

The main character, even though it's a live action film, will be done with CG animation and will be shot in 3D using the stereo imagining system that James Cameron had been developing for his documentaries.

I did wonder why there were no adaptations after the OAV considering what a hit it was over here

I'll probably see the new movie on A-List this weekend, hopefully in eye-splintering IMAX 3D

Norm’s Superego (silby), Thursday, 21 February 2019 19:09 (five years ago) link

if you're someone (like me!) who can appreciate Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending definitely go see this

Nhex, Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:18 (five years ago) link

It's a tad better than Mortal Engines, but if someone told me this was as visually bonkers as Speed Racer, I'd be disappointed.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:40 (five years ago) link

this movie is good, sometimes very good. i also was wishing it had been the wachowskis, who'd dive more into the cyberpunk/fluidity-of-identity potential here. but rodriguez is thankfully awake at the wheel and turns in a really competent and sometimes super fun action slash girl-finding-her-identity movie.

if you'd told me twenty years ago that hollywood was going to make a battle angel movie i would have put money on it being a complete mess, on the cheap, with nothing to do with the comics. instead it's almost shockingly faithful to them without becoming a watchmen-esque xerox. the action in particular has the cleanness, momentum, and pose-to-pose intensity of those great drawings. it is a LITTLE episodic and feels longer than two hours, but that's also because i wasn't sure which plots they're just teasing and which were gonna get resolved, so i was bracing myself for possible 4th and 7th acts that turned out not to be there.

oh and yeah it's definitely nowhere close to as formally bonkers as speed racer. maybe comparable in its basic good-naturedness and willingness to throw its world at you without overexplaining it.

|Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Friday, 22 February 2019 00:32 (five years ago) link

I'd say it's more than a little episodic! It's like the first 6 episodes of a 12-episode anime season. I was surprised and pleased it ended when it did and not 40 minutes later. If they leave me to imagine/fanfic the rest, or read the manga, I won't be heartbroken. But I do hope James Cameron fleeces some more idiots to make the sequel.

Norm’s Superego (silby), Friday, 22 February 2019 00:53 (five years ago) link

I groaned thinking that the villain was played by Cameron himself under dodgy makeup but then groaned again when it turned out not to be Cameron.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 22 February 2019 01:11 (five years ago) link

one of the very speed racer things about this is that if you miss it in the theater you will be mad at yourself later when you see it on a small screen. I actually keep thinking I need to go back and pay more attention but I know I won't be able to make the time.

this was better than i expected and far more faithful to the source material than i could've predicted.
cons: overstuffed, overlong, more than a bit indulgent in its expectations about how much i'm supposed to care about these characters, lol at the ed norton tease
pros: visually sumptuous, clear and well orchestrated fight scenes, consistently well-thought out creative design, literal big-eyed manga heroine surprisingly well acted

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 14:05 (four years ago) link

flipped back thru some chunks of this at the tail end of a flight with no time to watch a whole movie. it still ruled, and benefited from being able to skip the Hugo scenes and just focus on Alita and Doc Ido. i love how many times she yells "HIIIII-YA!" and smashes things. it's hard not to wish they'd cut the hugo subplot way down and actually finished the whole story, but i also admire the gutsiness of their imagining they'd be able to do a part ii, and thus take their time with the origin story stuff, multiple showdowns with the same guys, lots of talk about berserker bodies and panzer kunst, etc. etc. wish connolly had a little more to do but maybe i forgot/skipped her best scenes.

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 14:11 (four years ago) link

connolly and ali both seemed mostly wasted as far as i could see but they didn't take anything away from the film

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link

it's flawed, and ending right where the story should be ramping up to a conclusion is... frustrating

but it has a lot of heart and the cast are great

(especially christolph waltz, who delivers an actual genuinely touching performance instead of falling back on the tics he's been relying on since inglourious basterds and also he has a rocket-propelled hammer ffs)

i'd have to rewatch SpyKids and the first two Mariachi movies, which iirc do have the advantage of being a little more focused than this one.

I maintain that this movie’s wandering episodic focus is a strength not a weakness and makes the whole project feel More Anime
