I guess per an NPR report a few weeks ago, about 9 people had bought them, including one of the Amazon reviewers.

but the silver ones and the blue ones both seem to be 20th century classics.

I've noticed that books I've bought in aquamarine have been republished in silver, so I think they are moving the collection over to the new colours.

I've just cum all over my computer.

It seems like the silvers may have the best designed covers. They also aren't available in the USA, which could be why they are color coded different than the blacks (just guessing). The aquamarine ones were generally some of the most dull looking books I've seen - I'm glad they are slowly disappearing. The newly designed black ones tend to be a big improvement, but not quite worth the price hike. I'm also not too keen on the two finish covers. That switch from smooth to rough is slightly unpleasant. Occasionally the black covers are downright awful. For instance the black spine version of On the Road is a disgrace.

I was hoping for the black-spined look.

I'd buy some of those mugs, but I don't really have enough of a relationship with any of the books featured to invest ("The Great Gatsby" comes closest.)

Don't know what to make of the merger talks with Random House. Reminiscent of the consolidation that happened when the music industry collapsed. I'm not sure P3@rs0n sees much of a future in physical fiction sales or is 100% sure of the revenue model for digital going forward.

it'll be really nice to add the collected works of ayn rand and friedrich hayek to the library of Penguin classics

but the boo boyz are getting to (Z S), Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, there are at least three Rand books in the Penguin Modern Classics library already!

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Sunday, 28 October 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

haha, really?

ok not to get all fahrenheit 451 but that library could probably be cut down in size a little

Deal with BMG has been done. 53% stake sold, 47% retained. Will be called Penguin Random House.

really gutted they decided against Random Penguins

but yeah this isn't great

Polly Toynbee OK (Noodle Vague), Monday, 29 October 2012 11:16 (eleven years ago) link

I suspect the Murdoch leak and the rumour of a 75% stake going over to BMG (via the FT, which is owned by the same company as Penguin) was to make this look like a less awful option. In fairness, it could have been a lot worse. It's very difficult to say how much of an impact this'll have on the running of Penguin or the books that it carries. The deal still has to be ratified by the competition authorities and the integration isn't really expected until late 2013. No details have been released at this stage.

Does anybody know what the asking price was when this was initially posted. Looking at what it says now & its a couple of thousand nearly so I'm assuming that isn't the same figure.

Stevolende, Monday, 29 October 2012 12:01 (eleven years ago) link

sorry, bit out there. actually $13,400.00 which makes it sound like even less of an offer.
Surprised that a marketplace seller would do something like that, is it cheaper to buy the titles individually? Just seems a meaningless figure when it's that high, doubt if anybody would avail of the offer.

Stevolende, Monday, 29 October 2012 12:04 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know. You often hear of rich people buying books by the yard to make their houses look better. I can see the appeal of having 1100 of the "greatest books in history" as a ready-made library. It's almost certainly a big saving on the individual RRPs but probably not a massive one on the Amazon prices.

I would be willing to listen to offers in the region of $10,000 for my collection of 800 or so, btw.

Go Narine, Go! (ShariVari), Monday, 29 October 2012 12:48 (eleven years ago) link

Okay, the conversation overlapped for a second there and I thought Stevolende was saying that Penguin was bought out for $13,000, and I was all, "B-b-but we could've bought them out!"

Two of the largest book publishers -- Penguin, home to Patricia Cornwell and Nora Roberts, and Random House, which publishes E.L. James and George R.R. Martin --
