What do Vengeance Is Mine and The Big Lebowski have in common?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 14 October 2005 20:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Were one of the actresses imitating Kate Hepburn?

Vengeance Is Mine was substantial, and I'm not even sure I'm getting S.I.'s injections of morbid slapstick into the grim proceedings entirely; cultural? plenty of that in The Pornographers, Pigs & Battleships, The Eel too... the 'inn' madam's scene with her syndicate lover's feet in closeup esp. I did like that Ken Ogata was making funny faces and otherwise acting like a resourceful crazy man unlike the 'cool' killers so beloved by US filmmakers.

I think you're thinking of The Hudsucker Proxy.

Good point about the way my namesake played crazy in that movie. I've liked him a lot in the films of that other Japanese director that nobody ever heard of until a few years ago- I still can't remember his name, but he directed "The Woman With Red Hair." There was one movie about a guy who wanted to divorce his dying wife to marry a young girl called "Love Letter" and another about a crazy poet who keeps getting involved in suicide pacts but failing to kill himself with a Latin/Italian title like "Enamorata."

Hah. Ken Ogata is not in those movies it is another Ken, but the woman (Mitsuko Baisho?) from Vengeance is Mine plays the wife in Love Letter. Kumashiro is the director.

and Intentions of Murder... bleaker than bleak. (great SCTV-style traffic fatality, tho)

his Black Rain drags a bit. Dr. Akagi a much more successful (tho different and nuttier) take on Hiroshima-related themes.

I had a prof who loved to call him "the Osama bin Laden of filmmaking". What the hell that means, I have no idea. But I did just watch Warm Water Under a Red Bridge and yeah, I'm curious to continue traipsing thru the filmography.

PS - It's good to be back.

hi GS -- what can we do to resurrect ILF?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Stop posting the film stuff on ILE.
I would love to see ILF stand on its own, but if you want a decent amount of responses seems like like you have to post the topic on ILE.

seven years pass...

def struck me as right to scrap the end color scene of 'black rain'

didnt know that miike worked with him, couldnt tell exactly if it was like a tongue in cheek, overworked admiration or whether miike was actually unhappy working as second ad on black rain......either way, he did say he learned a lot
