Yeah, this is really hard. Karmacoma, maybe?

Possibly my least fav. song on the whole thing, but that's probably just me.

stephen, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

like my first instinct is to vote for teardrop cause its the first MA song i ever heard when i was like 12 or whatever and it fucked up my world, but then there's inertia creeps and unfinished sympathy and five man army and safe from harm and fuuuuck

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

"live with me" may be my favorite on here, actually. gets more incredible with each listen.

stephen, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

why aren't singles Daydreaming, Be Thankful and Special Cases on this?

blueski, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Of these, probably Angel.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

(but I prefer Group Four)

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

"Unfinished Sympathy."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

[Karmacoma is p]ossibly my least fav. song on the whole thing, but that's probably just me.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Look how nicely I formated that quote. Here's the response I meant to add:

It's not just you, Stephen...

Paul in Santa Cruz, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty much impossible. 'safe from harm' is the only one that i have performed live (keys).

banriquit, Sunday, 27 April 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

yay Paul

stephen, Monday, 28 April 2008 02:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i can't get a vote for Hymn of the Big Wheel? Protection it is...

avonhun, Monday, 28 April 2008 03:28 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmmm 'risingson' i guess. best encapsulates for me the moody quality this band often has

Charlie Howard, Monday, 28 April 2008 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i have never even heard protection

the album or the song

no protection is fucking awesome tho and deserves its own poll

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 May 2008 00:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I might've voted for Unfinished Sympathy if I had known it was going to get so few clicks. Overplayed as it is, it remains a magnificent piece of work.

chap, Monday, 5 May 2008 12:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah this whole "voting for the 1 TRACK you like the most" thing is so unfair.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 5 May 2008 12:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I voted for Protection, but Unfinished Sympathy would've been my number two, as they are the only Massive Attack songs I really care about. Both are brilliant tunes, but only one of them has ever brought me to tears, so I had to choose that.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 May 2008 12:50 (fifteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

So I put this together.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 July 2017 20:49 (six years ago) link

As much as Unfinished Sympathy is magnificent, I heard The Big Wheel for the first time in ages the other day, so I'd probably plump for that as my favourite. Nice list.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 27 July 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

I missed the crucial bit, ffs! ...heard The Big Wheel and it dropped me right back into some pretty intense times from that period, so probably...

Protection def my 1st choice with Unfinished Sympathy a close second. US goes perfectly with El Perro Del Mar's "Walk On By" St. Etienne Remix, as it quotes the lyrics.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 27 July 2017 21:45 (six years ago) link

Alfred you could have included at least a song from heligoland or ritual union ep. Every song they've done with Horace Andy including Everywhen and Girl I Love You are great except that terrible Doors cover.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Thursday, 27 July 2017 22:48 (six years ago) link

'Risingson'!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 27 July 2017 22:56 (six years ago) link

Best thing they ever did: "Black Milk"

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 28 July 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

one year passes...

your evaluation of protection is unbelievably wrong

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:45 (five years ago) link

Nevertheless, I'm grateful for it producing "Protection."

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:46 (five years ago) link

I love 100th Window on a level on par with the previous three these days. I need to give Heligoland a proper shot.

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 01:53 (five years ago) link

so do I

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 February 2019 02:00 (five years ago) link

I loved "Splitting the Atom" as the theme to the very doomed series LUCK

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 02:02 (five years ago) link

I forgot how great "Live With Me" is, truly one of the best "singles tacked onto a best-of" ever

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 7 February 2019 05:16 (five years ago) link

I wish these guys were more prolific so I didn’t miss them so much, even their “bad” songs sound good to me.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 February 2019 07:26 (five years ago) link

Heligoland was a slow grower - but it's now my fave along Mezzanine.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 7 February 2019 10:40 (five years ago) link

Wow, you must really hate 'Pre-Millennium Tension' to not even list it.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:02 (five years ago) link

No Protection is worth a listen too

Neil S, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:03 (five years ago) link

Maybe its #4? (xp)

dorsalstop, Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:47 (five years ago) link

oh wow it's about a month and a half until I see the Mezzanine anniversary tour :O

mh, Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:49 (five years ago) link

PMT falls apart in its second side, "Lyrics of Fury" aside.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:51 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I really disagree with that assessment. I think "Sex Drive," "My Evil is Strong," "Bad Things" and "Piano" just feel weak by comparison, because the first six tracks - "Vent" through "Ghetto Youth" are such an amazing run, but the whole album is ridiculously strong and cohesive. It sustains a very ugly, enervated mood and provides no relief or catharsis. I love it. It and Mezzanine are the two absolute keepers from this whole body of work IMO.

grawlix (unperson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:13 (five years ago) link

The first side is his most concentrated work; I can listen to "Tricky Kid" on loop for hours.

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:15 (five years ago) link

The PMT tour in 1997 was fucking wild. He played in almost total darkness. I saw the NYC date - Jeru the Damaja opened.
