You don't think PE are a lock?

Is Boston in the HOF? If they are, then Oasis could be. Other names that were big & rawk in the 70s who are now eligible - would have been in for sure if the voting took place 25 years ago: (I don't know if some of these might already be in, but will probaly not be in ..)

Joe Walsh (solo)
Blue Oyster Cult
Dave Mason (solo)
Seals & Crofts
America
Doobie Brothers
3 Dog Night

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the HOF is ludicrously racist and conservative - why would they even *listen* to PE?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

jonviachicago, OTM. Especially after American Idiot which will be remembered, perhaps, as this time's political rock, whatever the worth in that is.

Matt Chesnut (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

odds 5:4 against hootie.
low odds?
they will get even lower as hootiemania reaches its zenith in 2008.
i jest you not.

White Stripes

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Dave Matthews and John Mayer are locks. They shouldn't be, but they are.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

the HOF is gonna have to do some serious soul-searching "is hip-hop rock?" type of shit before they induct any rap artist, period. And frankly, since it's all just an industry circle-jerk, they'll probably decide that no, it isn't rock, and just create a separate "Hip Hop Hall of Fame" because they'll be able to make more money/generate more press+marketing momentum that way.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Run DMC will get in on their first year of eligibility, followed by Public Enemy and LL as well, hell.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Hootie, White Stripes, john Mayer... Hell, I've forgotten them already. I don't see any of them. Green Day is a possibility like The Guess Who is a possibility.

Run DMC & PE, absolutely. (LL maybe)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Shakey, ease up. Even though we all know when hip hop and rap got going, it'll be another several years before any huge mainstream artists are even eligible. PE is a lock for sure. Run DMC too. The first white rapper to be inducted won't be until Eminem's eligible, though. The Beasties will be an afterthought by that point.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I just think the hip-hop /= rock thinking is WAY more prevalent in the HOF than any of you guys seem to think. Just as much as country /= rock. I mean, is Travis Tritt in the HOF?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

The Beasties will be remembered longer than Em, methinks. Also, the Cure? Depeche Mode? Don't know if those are "today's artists," but whatchu think?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

NIN?

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Radiohead is definitely in. Personally I look forward to the All*Star Jam Session in 2015, where Tom Petty and Dave Matthews join the boys and the staid ballroom is transformed into a sweaty roadside jukejoint by an impassioned reading of "Subterranean Homesick Alien."

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Beastie Boys will make it in. They're only 6 years from eligibility!

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Will the Beasties become eligible in two years? When did Pollywog Stew come out... 1982? I'm not sure about them being remembered longer than Em, though. You have to remember; we on ILx live in a bubble and really don't look at things like the rest of the world does.

Class of 2020: Alanis Morrisette

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Although, the fact that they held several Tibetan Freedom Concerts, started a magazine and a label, etc... all these things will carry some weight with Wenner.

Class of 2019: Outkast

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I just think the hip-hop /= rock thinking is WAY more prevalent in the HOF than any of you guys seem to think. Just as much as country /= rock. I mean, is Travis Tritt in the HOF?

My guess is that the criteria in that respect is whether they made an impact on the rock charts. Travis Tritt, no. Garth Brooks - maybe. (Though doubtful because he's worse than Billy Joel.)

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:37 (nineteen years ago) link

well we're all music freaks here, so genre boundaries are fluid and mutable for most of us. I don't think this is true for most of the rest of the listening audience tho, and certainly not for an institution as stodgy and industry-driven as HOF.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I think you're generally right, wrt attitude. But R&B and Funk musicians got in, so I think there is some ... 'tolerance' for non-rawk music.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

(x-post) I think with past inductions like Bob Marley, James Taylor, Etta James, and Isaac Hayes, they'll be pretty open genre-wise in the future. Shakey OTM as far as industry-driven, though, it'll probably matter what label's controlling the back catalog at the time as far as who gets pushed.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

It doesn't matter.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

How does any particular artist get a push, then, especially ones who get inducted after their first year of eligibility? Is it a matter of a powerful or well-connected industry person making it their personal mission?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

King Crimson will never make it in, and that fuckin' pisses me off.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I was actually going to start a thread today which sort of encompasses some ideas here. Forget the HOF--but doesn't it depress anyone else that some of the really crappy artists mentioned on this thread will eventually be canonized, or at least respected by future generations?

I think it's inevitable that Alanis, DMB, RHCP, STP, Green Day, etc. will be held in the same regard as the most of us hold 70's-80's rock now (which is, it's all pretty much revered or at least tolerated with a smirk--even the 2nd-3rd tier stuff like America, Guess Who).

Keith C (kcraw916), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:01 (nineteen years ago) link

from the '90s, I see Purl Jamm, Pavement, Nirvana. And Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments. I think the White Stripes are a lock, too. Oasis, why not? Teenage Fanclub. Big Star will eventually make it in. Dave Matthews and Phish might as well belong too, I guess the Dead's in it? Outkast, Gwen Stefani. Green Day, Korn, I couldn't give a shit who's in it. The heart of rock and roll is in Cleveland, and from what I hear they still believe it.

Pavement = no way...not big enough aboveground success.

Radiohead is like the Talking Heads, "edgy" for the Hall of Fame, critically respected...they're in.

Teenage Fanclub? tee hee!

Re: King Crimson
Why? I'm sure they couldn't give less of a fuck about it themselves....and nor should they. It's meaningless.

I said I was pissed off, not that Fripp or any other Crims should be. I've never been very far above the fray, as it were.

I think they deserve it. It would be nice to see them get the recognition they deserve. It pisses me off because of WHY I think they're not in -- Fripp's insistence on calling bullshit on the corruption of the music industry, esp. since his re-un-retirement in the early 90s, following the "period of Endless Grief" legal fight with E.G. Records. He refuses to accept standard industry practices, especially accounting practices, and is very patient, methodical and intractable dealing with major labels*. Anyway, my guess is that part of the industry's payback is "No HoF for YOU."

*This certainly makes him come across as a dick and a martyr. He's infuriating as only the truly principled can be.

a banana (alanbanana), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Radiohead is like the Talking Heads, "edgy" for the Hall of Fame, critically respected...they're in.

Except for the fact that Seymour Stein is one of the men behind the HOF, and all of the Talking Heads LPs were on his label. Didn't Stein himself get inducted into the hall this year or last?

Alex: The Stooges are not in.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex: The Stooges are not in.

Yet the Pretenders are. Yeah, that makes sense.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:32 (nineteen years ago) link

The Pixies WITHOUT QUESTION.
Pavement WITHOUT QUESTION.

And don't give me that "...but they didn't sell any records!" nonsense. The Velvet Underground didn't sell shit either and they're in.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I honestly don't see Pavement making it. Maaaaaaaaybe the Pixies, though I doubt that too. Neither of those bands are a Velvet Underground size legend (though if Talking Heads can make it, who knows?). I think it will be many years till we will be able to guess accurately. It will depend on how relevant they remain as reference points for future bands, and how strong the Gen-X nostalgia remains for them.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Beck is much more likely to get in than either Pavement or the Pixies, in my view.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder which trip-hop artists stand a chance at getting in?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I say that, looking at bands that were big in the '90s:

R.E.M.
Beck
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
NIN
Sonic Youth
Beasties
Metallica
Radiohead
Green Day (with one more 'serious' album)
Pumpkins
Phish

... are all in. I can't think of any other 90s bands that were as big, though, besides RHCP and bands like Soundgarden, Bush, Live, etc., which I can't imagine will make the cut.

As for bands that are 'big' today not on the above list--i.e., bands who are more in the '00s--

White Stripes
Outkast
The Strokes
Wilco

are in. Assuming the whole place doesn't totally change and let in bands besides Outkast that don't use guitars.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 8 April 2005 00:02 (nineteen years ago) link

STROKES!

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 8 April 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Coldplay will probably make it. Teenage Fanclub - never in a million years. If this were the case then bands like Caravan or Gentle Giant would be getting inducted these days which is laughable.

everything, Friday, 8 April 2005 01:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Teenage Fanclub have as much chance of making it in as the Wonder Stuff do -- which is to say, not a chance in Hell.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Mary J. Blige: a lock.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Definitely going in:
Nirvana (they'd be inducted at least thrice if allowed)
R.E.M.
Beastie Boys
Run DMC
Public Enemy
Dr. Dre/N.W.A. or both
Metallica
Guns N Roses

Have a good shot:
Beck (a Rolling Stone darling)
White Stripes/future Jack White projects (see above)
Pearl Jam (may have fucked up their popularity too badly to get in)
Pixies
Eminem
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Outkast

Don't see it:
Smashing Pumpkins (maybe after Yes gets inducted)
Sonic Youth
Radiohead

No chance in hell:
Pavement
Nine Inch Nails
Oasis
uh... Hasil Adkins

I really don't like at least half these people but the trivial, analytical aspect forces me to weigh in

Chris Marx, Friday, 8 April 2005 02:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Smashing Pumpkins (maybe after Yes gets inducted)

Didn't Corgan induct Pink Floyd? They're totally in. Yet another meaningless band for a meaninless institution. HUMBUG!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 02:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Bjork's got a decent shot as does Beck. I don't see Dr. dre having a chance at all though. Same for Pavement, especially if The Fall aren't, and they never will.

Missy Elliott/Timbaland?

R.E.M. is totally there.

Dave M, Friday, 8 April 2005 04:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Snoop and Missy would get inducted before Dre and Timbaland - performers ROCK harder than producers.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 8 April 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd be surprised if R.E.M. doesn't make it next year or the year after, and Nirvana Will probably be in the first year they're eligible. (2014?)

I also think Radiohead, the Pixies, Metallica, Dave Matthews band, Guns N Roses, Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, Beck and Sonic Youth have a good shot.

Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy will either make it in, or they'll start a hip hop hall of fame.

I don't see Teenage Fanclub,m the White Stripes, the Strokes or Coldplay making it.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Great, worthy, ground-breaking, innovative, influential bands who will NEVER EVEN BE CONSIDERED for the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame:

The Stranglers
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Motorhead
Killing Joke
Julian Cope/the Teardrop Explodes
Dead Kennedys
Black Flag
Throbbing Gristle
the Misfits
the Pop Group
Cop Shoot Cop
Pussy Galore
Swans

The thinnest of possible chances:
Buzzcocks
the Damned
Joy Division
Devo
B-52s

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd put money on DEVO making it. They are still fairly high profile in the music business and have a high memory quotient for people that were around at the time.

Depends a bit what kind of judgement values the people behind the HOF will use in 20 years, and how wide their definition of "rock'n'roll" will be by then.

Even though I am not at all into hip-hop, I hope they will also be able to include hip-hop (and electronica), as hip-hop and electronica are both clearly part of the bigger and broader history of rock'n'roll.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:32 (nineteen years ago) link

The most patently ridiculous omisson from the HOF right now is Black Sabbath. Which is all the more fitting, because the old guard (Wenner, et al) angrily dismissed them for so long and STILL wants them to go away, but they are totally indestructible. Kids will be rocking out to "Iron Man" as long as this globe is spinning.

The guy who most deserves to get into the HOF but sadly will probably never is Brian Eno. If you combine all his contributions to music--keyboard player in Roxy Music, solo records, producer--he'd warrant his own WING of the entire goddamn building.

Anyway, REM, Metallica, Madonna, Run DMC and Public Enemy are the sure-thing locks from the 1980s. 1990s, you've got Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead. After that it gets a little fuzzy.

Regarding hip-hop'ers, I am pretty sure Public Enemy will get in there in 5-6 years time. And probably De La Soul a few years later. Those early hip-hop'ers haven't made any albums that have made impact, and even though not everybody in the HOF is "rock", they will certainly have to be part of the rock "canon" to get in.
