oh, if you've never heard them, and you like that album, go find My Life in a Hole in the Ground. wonderful album.
-- The JaXoN 5

Oooh yeah. But they're always good, so buy the album. Long summer evenings on the back porch in the 80's with friends and a pot of tea... that's what I think of when I hear AHC... right, gaz?

My Life in a Hole in the Ground has been on my want list for a while. I need more On-U-Sound, period. All I have are the debuts of New Age Steppers, Singers and Players, and The Missing Brazilians (and although it wasn't on On-U-Sound, Mark Stewart and the Maffia's As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade could count as an On-U-Sound release because so much of it was inspired by that Missing Brazilians album...to the point where the untitled track on the Maffia CD is just "Igloo Inn" from the Missing Brazilians put through a pitchshifter or something).

fifteen years pass...

as expected i eventually succumbed and ordered the recent boxset of the later era of AHC albums despite having the original cds.
rather glad i did, as the 'Underpulse Motion DJ Edit' of Pursuit is all time on-u brilliance.

I bought both the AHC boxes, and the Dub Syndicate one too. I wish they'd do one for Creation Rebel. (I also want all the early Tackhead/Gary Clail 12"s on CD.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 20 November 2020 18:37 (three years ago) link

Do you have the Tackhead Tape Time CD?

https://www.discogs.com/Gary-Clails-Tackhead-Sound-System-Tackhead-Tape-Time/release/74239

I would LOVE there to be a reissue of Creation Rebel's Close Encounters Of The Third World which is the one i have never managed to track down.

That Underpulse Motion DJ Edit is fab!

I first heard Tackhead Tape Time in 1988. I love it, but I want the full 12" tracks and the B-sides. The full-length versions of "Mind at the End of the Tether" and "What's My Mission Now?" are absolutely crushing, even today.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 20 November 2020 18:50 (three years ago) link

totally agree re Creation Rebel boxset, same goes for Singers & Players.

and yes, i have Tackhead Tape Time - found cd Netwerk/US cd edition back in the day, and have been very grateful ever since.
that said, it would be great to have the full 12" versions unedited.
the nearest you can get is to track down the Power Inc compilations that KLB released.
they are not cheap now, but they have quite a few 12" versions of early Tack>>Head tracks.

oh, and re Singers & Players :
apparently they don't have the masters for Vacuum Pumping, so a few years back i offered my mint copy that's never been played as i bought the cassette version as well, and they said they were interested.
but as yet, nothing has happened.

also, these cd boxsets are beautifully made.
the heavy duty outer case is far superior to most other boxsets i have.
i love the whole look and feel of them.

somewhat tangential to african head charge but i picked this out of a dollar bin about three weeks ago and was very pleasantly surprised by how fresh the a-side sounded

the late great, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

Fair enough. I had forgotten they were truncated versions; I haven't listented to the album for a long time. And the 12" of "What's My Mission Now?" is particularly essential imo. I think "Now What?" might crush even more.

Vacuum Pumping is all time! I hope they eventually take you up on your offer.

stirmonster, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

"Mind At The End Of The Tether" is still great. I love "Is There A Way Out?" too.

A Tackhead / Fats Comet retrospective definitely seems like it would make sense.

re What's My Mission Now as i said :

mark e, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:08 (three years ago) link

I've never seen that but then I don't buy CDs. This can't be right -

Tackhead - What's My Mission Now? (Parts 1 & 2) 7:30

Is this meant to be both sides together? Surely it should be longer.

stirmonster, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:18 (three years ago) link

never heard the original 12" so have no idea.
sorry.

mark e, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:20 (three years ago) link

also, as all on-u stans know, KLB is (in)famous for revising the history re Tack>>Head (apparently he owns the whole Tack>>Head thing),
so who knows exactly what the Power Inc compilations contain in relation to the original 12" versions.
however, i care not, as volumes 1 and 2 are brilliant.
the third volume is a live set intermixed with some bizarre voicemails.
most weird, but it works as the live material is insane.

mark e, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:23 (three years ago) link

Fair enough and I hope you get to hear it some day. I think it is maybe my fave Tackhead.

stirmonster, Friday, 20 November 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

love that version of "Pursuit", very cool, thanks

What's this one like?

I may have posted about this before on another On-U thread, but back in 2017 I emailed On-U through their Bandcamp page as follows:

Please - I'm begging you - put together a compilation of all the early Tackhead and Gary Clail 12" singles, B-sides and all.

1. Mind at the End of the Tether
2. Is There a Way Out
3. What's My Mission Now?
4. Now What?
5. Hard Left
6. Hard Left (Instrumental)
7. Reality
8. Life & Dreams
9. Ticking Time Bomb
10. Ticking Time Bomb Dub
11. Body to Burn
12. Half Cut for Confidence
13. Half a Gram a Shout

Thanks!

The response was:

This would be a beautiful thing. Getting all the members to agree is another matter tho - this will happen one day is all I can say at the moment.

cheers

i agree unperson, that would be a thing of perfection.

stirmonster : its a very live sounding cut, so relatively lo-fi for Tack>>Head, but hey ...

two years pass...

the new album is so much better than i expected.
adrian has released several albums in recent times that focus on vocals : LSP, Horace Andy, and Jeb
so it's great to hear new material where he can stretch things out a bit.
yeah, it's not quite as out there as some of the early AHC albums, but hey.
oh, and the coverart is off the scale.
love it.

two months pass...

I recently got the two AHC boxes and i’m loving them, tremendous music. Allmusic tells me that they have two albums, not included in this set that were not on-u sound. Were these made without Sherwood? Any good?

If I have both the boxes and the new album, am I missing anything of consequence?
