Classic because you can bang out the main riff all on the black keys.

Don't forget Oliver's House, my second favorite Sheila E song.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

A breathless CLASSIC!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 16 January 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic, because as with "A Love Bizarre" you can clearly hear Prince's guide vocals in the background. They're basically poorly mixed duets (not that they're poorly mixed, just mixed with Prince's vocals too low).

CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC
real love is real scary money only pays the rent

Beyond classic. This song is flat-out outstanding.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:06 (nineteen years ago) link

i like "a love bizarre" more, but "glamorous life" is definitely classic.

it's tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic. Absolutely. To anyone who knows: technically speaking, how 'good' at the timbales was Sheila E? I cherish her solo spot in "sign o' the times," but may I don't know the steak from the sizzle.

Also, I assume in some universe Prince wanted Candy Dulfer to be the next Sheila E, right? I guess that didn't work.

Does anyone else like this lady's first two albums like I do?

Bimble, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I agree "A Love Bizarre" needs a chorus, though.

Bimble, Sunday, 20 January 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Album or single?
Single = Classic
Album = undecided

Am I missing something?

Jedmond, Sunday, 20 January 2008 22:58 (sixteen years ago) link

No, I was agreeing with you!

The Reverend, Sunday, 20 January 2008 23:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Wasn't sure which way the quoting of me was going. Had just woken up.

Peak Sheila E. moment (albeit Prince dominated) = The live performance of "A Love Bizarre" from the Birthday Parade video - will always put a idiot grin on my face.

And where is the love for "Toy Box" from In Romance 1600?

Jedmond, Monday, 21 January 2008 00:20 (sixteen years ago) link

A live performance of A Love Bizarre from the Birthday Parade video! I'll have to seek that out. I was so disgusted by what I saw of her performance in that Krush Groove movie. What the hell was she doing a rap song for?

Bimble, Saturday, 26 January 2008 09:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Does "Love Bizarre" even have much of a tune?? I always thought "The Glamorous Life" and "Belle of St. Mark" totally blew it out of the water, but maybe I'll go back and listen to it someday. (Then again, maybe it's just overrated by people who overrate Prince, after, like, 1982. In my head it sounds like a fair-to-middling Prince song.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 26 January 2008 12:45 (sixteen years ago) link

There's really nothing too exceptional about A Love Bizarre. The song simply goes nowhere. It's pleasant enough, but goes nowhere. She's got so many other good songs from the first two albums that it doesn't matter.

I still say Prince was far less involved in what she did than the general consensus seems to be. Pure sexism, I say. Read the fucking liner notes. Tendency is to attribute nothing to her and that pisses me off.

Bimble, Sunday, 27 January 2008 06:54 (sixteen years ago) link

And yes I know Prince gets a writing credit on A Love Bizarre. Big deal.

Bimble, Sunday, 27 January 2008 06:55 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not "consensus" -- it's fact. He wrote or co-wrote most of those songs. I was disappointed when I found out!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 27 January 2008 08:30 (sixteen years ago) link

On her first two albums you mean? What about her third? And where is this information coming from? Why was she given writing credits and not him?

I'm not being accusatory or necessarily doubting you Alfred, I'm just trying to get more information. Her website doesn't seem to mention it...a Prince forum I found seems to assume he wrote one song...

Bimble, Sunday, 27 January 2008 16:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Alex Hahn's Possessed: The Rise & Fall of Prince confirms his authorship of the first two Sheila E and most of the first three Time albums, and all of the Vanity 6 thing.

all sheila e enthusiasts should listen to the sheila e episode of this podcast http://www.thetrapset.net/sheila-e-solo-artist-prince-e-family/
(you should also read her book but this is a much shorter route)
she talks about everything and she is a legend and i love her

La Lechera, Saturday, 8 August 2015 13:49 (eight years ago) link

Cool! I've listened to a couple eps of that podcast and Joe Wong is a drip, but Sheila E is worth diving back in.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 8 August 2015 14:09 (eight years ago) link

his line of questioning was really lame in the beginning (and periodically afterwards, i've listened to every episode i think) and i was worried about this episode but it's way way way better and he actually talks about drumming
her description of how her dad's west coast style is different from trad latin drumming was really interesting and her description of a day in the life hanging out with My Friend Prince warmed my heart. i really enjoyed it. she has been through it all and is an inspiration.

La Lechera, Saturday, 8 August 2015 14:13 (eight years ago) link

well he asks her about it, he doesn't talk much at all, thank goodness
