wait a minute.. there is a lyric that is actually interesting...

"well maybe i'm the faggot america/im not a part of a redneck agenda"

why spend all that money on a video?

lyrics wack but the guitar is back

this album is gonna do great

lyrics so-so, not as bad as you're all making them out to be... the "maybe i'm the faggot america" line is great and jumps out just as it's meant to. the video is nice, i like the jasper johns hommage/ripoff.

I tried to get into it today at work. I listened to it a few times. The only song I truly enjoyed was "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams."

I really like the album! "Jesus of Surbia" is way better than it has any right to be. The second part of it sounds like "All the Young Dudes."

one of the beats on this album sounds just like "the passenger" sped up.

green day fans: is this album a "progression" or some big leap? i haven't heard a full gd album since dookie.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 26 September 2004 02:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Progression. The album is better than the single.

Also, Trayce, I read that as "God I just came all over Alex in NYC then didn't I?" In fact, even several re-readings left me with the same impression, until the truth dawned.

Good lord. Towel, please!

Billy Joe Armstrong got his teeth fixed = NOT Punk. Heh.

Why are they still making albums?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

The new one's way better than it has any right to be. Alex's question is more appropriate for the previous two records, which beyond one or two tunes, kinda sucked.

I finally heard this. I liked it a lot. I dug the cheesy-ass "rock & roll girlfriend" track and vocal sound on the first two tracks.

charles isherwood in the nyt:

“American Idiot,” directed by Michael Mayer and performed with galvanizing intensity by a terrific cast, detonates a fierce aesthetic charge in this ho-hum Broadway season. A pulsating portrait of wasted youth that invokes all the standard genre conventions — bring on the sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll, please! — only to transcend them through the power of its music and the artistry of its execution, the show is as invigorating and ultimately as moving as anything I’ve seen on Broadway this season. Or maybe for a few seasons past.

i wouldn't go quite so far as that, but i saw the musical in previews last week and liked it a lot. didn't reach the heights of my favorite rock musicals (most recent entry: "passing strange"), but it was genuinely moving. the opening punk-pop blast of the title song was very nearly startling. the arrangements are well done. one of the girl singers (blond who plays the wife of the guy who stays at home, has kids and is bored out of his skull) has a terrific rock voice. the onstage punk-rock chick keyboardist/conductor was a blast to watch.

anyway, here's something sort of interesting about green day's american idiot: add a shitload of harmonies and other little musical parts and pretty much all the songs on it sound like they were written for a traditional broadway musical.

so did Green Day ever have to pay Bryan Adams for that bit of Jesus in Suburbia that was a direct rip of "Summer of '69"?

Someone on an FB thread of "legacy ruining albums" mentioned American Idiot, but idk, this is their last great record. everything after has been shit. But it's got tracks. "Jesus of Suburbia" is still amazing. Boulevard of Broken Dreams was overplayed to an extent that I don't think I can ever hear it again without thinking of MTV/VH1 commercial bumpers, but i remember it being good at the time. the whole thing is great. still amazing that they pulled off a career renaissance when they did.

I've never been a Green Day fan and this album was no exception. However, if I notice that the weather is getting wet, I will sing to myself here comes the rain again/falling from the stars.

Mark G, Monday, 15 August 2016 11:10 (seven years ago) link

was really disappointed with this album when it came out bc I wanted them to keep making the fake kinks songs they were writing on warning

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 15 August 2016 13:26 (seven years ago) link

(thesis: all kinks songs are fake kinks songs, this is the point of the kinks)

mark s, Monday, 15 August 2016 13:33 (seven years ago) link

You want the "Foxboro Hot Tubs" album then.

Revisited this for the first time in over a decade today, and
-Jesus of Suburbia is a 10/10 track
-Armstrong's vocals on the verses in whatsername are kind of amazing. he's not exactly a good singer but the pop-punk boyishness of his crooning sounds very sad and bittersweet. It covers up well the fact that the concept of the song is pretty dumb

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 17 July 2017 05:22 (six years ago) link

It's still a great record, pretty much saved their bacon career-wise after the lacklustre Warning and wound up their old fanbase as a result.
