Grupo Folklorico y Experimental's Concepts in Unity is also pretty good. (I forgot they were on salsoul.)

You know, honestly, I don't like this Concepts in Unity album that much.

Please reconsider. :) It is my favourite Latin record. Anabacoa is my favourite track.

Oh no, a house/disco fan with more canonical taste in Latin music than mine. :( I am shamed. (Actually, I like disco quite a bit, myself, though I don't know more than the top hits.)

I like the version of "Cuba Linda" on there quite a bit, but, I don't know, I just can't get into the overall album that much.

What other Latin do you like? Maybe you could dredge up one of my salsa threads and add it there (not that all Latin music is salsa). How much have you heard? I'm afraid to ask, because I'm afraid I'm going to hear something like, "Well, actually I have a small Latin collection of about 500 albums," compared to my 80 or so.

I like "Dr Love" by First Choice.

ORS "Moon-Boots" 12". I haven't heard their full LP but if "Body to Body Boogie" is as good as this single, I'm sold.

I've read that Salsoul is going to discontinue its Latin titles, so if anyone is interested in new copies of that stuff, they might want to buy soon.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Sunday, 10 August 2003 16:05 (twenty years ago) link

Or anyway, it's salsa titles. (I don't know if "Latin Freestyle" is included, if the label put out any of that and it did didn't it?)

Al Andalous, Sunday, 10 August 2003 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

I bet Nascente will pick these titles up and release them in better-sounding remastered editions. I really like Nascente. They produce relatively lo-price CD reissues of a lot of Latin material with typically better sound quality than the reissues put out by the original labels. It's as though it takes a UK label, rather than the U.S./Puerto Rican labels which originally put this material out, to handle the material with proper respect or something.

Al Andalous, Sunday, 10 August 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

"Jingo" by Candido, the 10-minute version, is one of the greatest records of all time, probably my favorite Salsoul track

Revive.

What do ppl think of the new Salsoul comp that's just come out. Disco Funk Flavas I think it's called (ugh, horrible title, but never mind). Tracklist:

2. First Choice - Love Having You Around (Original Radio Edit)
3. Cubby St Charles - Party (Original 12" Mix)
4. Gaz - Sing Sing (Original 12" Mix)
5. Instant Funk - I Got My Mind Made Up (Original 12" Mix)
6. Instant Funk - Wide World Of Sports
7. Skyy - First Time Around (Original 12" Mix)
8. Loleatta Holloway - All About The Papers (Original Bobby "DJ" Guttadaro mix)
9. Edwin Birdsong - Rapper Dapper Snapper (Original 12" Mix)
10. Bumblebee Unlimited - The Bumble Bee Rap (Original John Morales 12" Mix)
11. Aurra - Are You Single? (Original 12" Mix)
12. Cameron - Funtown USA (Original 12" Mix)

Disc 2

10. Barbara Joyce - Do It Til You're Satisfied (Original 12" Mix)
11. Funk Deluxe - This Time (Original 12" Mix)

Also, HMV have the two Salsoul Mastercuts compilations on sale at the moment. Better to start with those than the above comp?

Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago) link

I've always loved Aurra. Steve Washington was a former member of Slave so they have that tough funk sound but with more of a sweet, melodic edge. Skyy are good as well. Again disco funk. I think I might buy this (although I have some of the Aurra tracks on original 12).

David (David), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:45 (twenty years ago) link

It is Logg-less; it is greatly flawed. Some odd picks too.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

I was hoping this would be a Sal Solo thread.

Andy, which Logg do you recommend beyond "I Know You Will"? Your fervor for that song has converted me utterly.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago) link

"Dancing into the Stars" and "You've Got That Something" are the other singles from that one-off album. They're both phenomenal, if not quite as tight as "I Know You Will." I know for a fact that Dusty Groove stocks a reissue on CD that includes all the 12" versions at the end of the original LP.

While you're at it, also get the two Leroy Burgess anthologies that came out on Soul Brother in 2002 -- they have the 12" versions of the Logg singles, along with Black Ivory's "Mainline," Class Action's "Weekend," Fonda Rae's "Over Like a Fat Rat," Convertion's "Let's Do It," the Fantastic Aleems' "Get Down Friday Night," etc. If you have a few of these songs, it's no matter. Get them anyway.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

It's kind of an odd selection. It might be a nice *addition* to "Original Salsoul Classics" or the Mastercuts comp if you can find it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

search Candido's Thousand Finger Man and Edwin Birdsong's Rapper Dapper Snapper.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

(xpost)
Yeah, I'm sure it's not even trying to be definitive or anything. Maybe these are just some 12"s previously unavailable on CD.

As I said above, all the Mastercuts releases are now back out on CD too. :)

I picked up Grandmaster Flash Presents Salsoul Jam 2000 in Tokyo this weekend (on cd). Has anyone heard this? I'm a bit of a newcomer to the Salsoul label but there's some great stuff on here. Really well mixed / presented by Flash. However, they must have recorded it in front of a live audience because there's some very annoying wooping and hollering throughout the mix. The cd sleeve has a cool hologram style pic of Flash mixing which nearly makes up for it.

There are actually a lot of duds in the Salsoul catalog, but "Jingo," "Love Sensation" and "Let No Man Put Asunder" more than make up.

Just found this, and it's (mostly) really good and chock full of classics:

http://www.discomusic.com/images/cover-s-z/va-discoboogiesalsoul.jpg

and the "disco blending" is done by Walter Gibbons himself.

It's taken quarantine to make me realize Up the Yellow Brick Road is a slept on album by Salsoul Orchestra. The "West Side Story Medley" just slams so joyously, and then on side 2 there's a Fiddler on the Roof medley. Also they're doing a disco "Sgt. Pepper" before the Bee Gees presumably.
