"Why classic? WHY????? C'mon, this is a staple of all restaurant menus no matter how big or small, posh or scummy (the restaurant) and I demand an explanation."

Dude, because it's GR34T of course.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i've never heard of this anchovy madness. disgusting.

proper caesar salad is, of course, one of the bestest most deliciousest things ever. croutons are AMAZING.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:32 (eighteen years ago) link

caesar dressing has anchovy paste in it. i suppose in some places it didn't, and doesn't, but still.

it also has a raw egg! classic.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i think the parmesan shavings are totally necessary but whaddo i know.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:42 (eighteen years ago) link

love them

ai lien (kold_krush), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:44 (eighteen years ago) link

it's sort of like the martini of salads; pungent and rockist

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Pungent and Rocket?

I'm thinking six, six, six (noodle vague), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

i personally love them but i am also equally enamored of the cobb salad's "jam band" approach

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

caesar salad without parmesan shavings = not worthy to be called caesar salad

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:54 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm not into caesars at all, but what's even grosser is the WALDORF salad.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE caesar salad. and the anchovies are supposed to be chopped up and part of the dressing, fules, so that the salty briney does not overpower the delicious garlicky lemoney delicious. my ex used to make teh best caesar dressing (which is really the only challenging part of making a caesar salad.)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

caeser is classic. Just a touch of the anchovy paste - but it has to be emusified into the creamy goodness to add that certain saltiness. none of this hairy, fishy anchovy body paying on top of the salad. Yeeech!

I just read in two different places that in my area (westside LA) that the caeser is now falling from favor as the #1 salad - and Chinese/Asian chicken salad is taking the #1 spot!

I like them both, but still prefer a good caesar.

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Caesar salad is pretty great. As a vegetarian, I used to not eat it because of the anchovy paste in the dressing, but I've decided I don't really care anymore. I like that such a simple salad can be so flavorful and satisfying. The only dud part is that the last time I got drunk and puked, all I'd had to eat earlier was a Caesar salad -- and that put me off them for a short while.

YOU GUYS WHO DO NOT LIKE THIS DELICIOUS FLAVOR ARE MENTALISTS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.

A local restaurant, Curly's Vegetarian Lunch, makes vegetarian versions of Caesar Salad and Chicken Caesar Salad made with what they call "home-cured soychovies."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago) link

"Soychovies" - the word alone makes my stomach turn.

Chicken caesar salad is pretty tasty. I never knew it had anchovies in the dressing. Also jbr is right, WALDORF SALAD SUX.

waldorf salad = reggaeton

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Anchovies on Caesar salad (hell, anchovies on *anything*) are a travesty. What's also a travesty is those restaurants that will serve you a plate of lettuce with some slices of parmesan and a few croutons on it and call it a Caesar salad. Don't give me sliced parmesan - grate that shit! And put some dressing on it for God's sake, Caesar salad wasn't meant to be healthy.

chicken salad with red grapes

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Attention restaurant owners- This is NOT a Caesar salad:

I kind of secretly admire people who eat anchovies - like I secretly admire anyone who eats gefilte fish or gravlax or other fishy stuff that I'm too squeamish to eat.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm currently eating a Caesar salad.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I don;t like ceasar salad, but I have never been offered it without anchovies, which sounds rather lovely.

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 20:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I could eat caesar every day for the rest of my life and die happy. Best caesar salad ever was at this Argentinian place in Mexico..waiters made the dressing and salad at the table. Total tastebud orgasm!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I made myself forget that there are anchovies in Caesar dressing...Thanks for reminding me.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:07 (eighteen years ago) link

50% of people who don't like caesar salad are unable to spell it. FACT!

dr lulu (dr lulu), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

i assume you mean in restaurants, AaronK!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic! I like a few anchovies on top, actually, but then again I guess we've already established that I sometimes enjoy salty things. There's something about the slight tartness of the dressing and the coolness and wateriness of the lettuce that sets a really good backdrop for the taste of anchovies. (Ha: that makes me think maybe anchovies and celery would be a really great snack combination!)

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 14 March 2006 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

So classic that you can see how someone might get the false impression that it's a dud. Indeed, you could almost forgive that person, even though they're wrong.

Pork Cheops (willpie), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 00:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Waldorf salad = classic up until age 12 or so, then dud-ish. I always thought it was so sophisticated (and I didn't even know about the Waldorf-Astoria connection, just the fact of eating a "salad" with walnuts and apples in it sent me over).

Caesar = classic, though frequently appears in dud versions, as noted above. Adding chicken is not original, I believe, but that's a classic update, makes it a meal.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

oh crap - don't tell me it's a Canadian thing?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 01:51 (eighteen years ago) link

CLASSIC. It's my favorite salad, which I know makes me not very interesting and not very daring in my tastes, but still. It's a fucking Caesar salad.
