nothing must be allowed to run over 24...they actually cancelled 24 for one week because of the fucking golf a month or so ago, that was bad enough

stevem (blueski), Monday, 5 May 2003 20:37 (twenty years ago) link

What happened to the Sunday Night Final Climax? That was an INSTITUTION.

Surely it's finished on a May Day BH Monday for ages?

Cor, 17-16... must watch exciting finish in bed. (Last year Pam fell asleep midway through 35th frame...)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:05 (twenty years ago) link

just finished. mark 18-16

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:16 (twenty years ago) link

shame, feel sorry for Ken, but Williams seems a funny chap and pretty decent.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

great match: i wished ken won really. Mark has been the best player. he trashed everybody on the way to the final and is world no1. and he knocked stephen hendry out so he's fine with me.

''is that the conway hall thing you went to?''

yup.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

I always liked him. < /back-track>. haha, no, yeah, he did come off as a nice guy... More power to him and all that...

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, after his comeback in the semis i thought his name was on the trophy. oh well, it was a good game, and i quite like williams, too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

I'm a right tool when it comes to snooker though (like most things, I suppose) in that I really like Stephen Hendry and really hate (HATE!) Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

I like ronnie and i don't hate stephen (though many do) BUT i don't want him to win more world titles.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:36 (twenty years ago) link

Ronnie O'Sullivan makes me think of the pig's head, goading me, making me stupid.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:39 (twenty years ago) link

wah! ronnie is great and should win more world titles. you are just jealous of his talent. bunch of hataz!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 5 May 2003 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

ppl hate ronnie cos he's an arrogant prick, but yes, he is entertaining.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 5 May 2003 22:17 (twenty years ago) link

Ronnie O'Sullivan is like a modern day Michael Corleone.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 May 2003 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

come on Jimmy!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

Reserve your hatred for John Parrott. Supposed to be funny, but just comes across as self-absorbed, unnatural on TV and, dare I say it, blown away by Steve Davis in terms of TV presentation.

Daniel (dancity), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

We need better snooker coverage here in the states. The kids don't even know how it works here.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 17:03 (twenty years ago) link

Wot no Cabbage?

I enjoyed 'Frame Academy' very much indeed. It put the 'OO' back into snooker for a few minutes, especially Steve Davis's elasticated balls.

I also enjoyed the odd glimpse of Terry Griffiths.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 08:39 (twenty years ago) link

R O'Sullivan is signing his books in Borders round the corner from me tonight, and his lingerie emporium is v.near where I work. It's Ronnie's world, I just live in it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 09:06 (twenty years ago) link

Ronnie O'Sullivan is everything.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 09:52 (twenty years ago) link

nine months pass...
bum-di-bum-bum-bump!

o'sullivan vs hunter 8:7 ...and 4 more to go, eh? or less, meh?

...the masters...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:37 (twenty years ago) link

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago) link

they saw me and thought 'heeey!'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

and o'sullivan kinda looks like nick cave.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:41 (twenty years ago) link

uuu-mmm... not quite

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:43 (twenty years ago) link

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

oh, it's now 9:7 to o'mullivann...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago) link

I've not watched snooker for a while. What's happened to O'Sullivan's bowlcut?

Also these are a couple of sexy shits, eh?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago) link

I mean, I imagine someone making smartass comments, esp about the blond one...

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

But if it was a foul leading to a free-ball in some dim alleyway, I bet you'd force him to play again, eh?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

Whatever.

They're both pretty great.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

Ew. Hunter looks about twelve and has one of David Beckhams's old haircuts. This does not sexy make :(

(xpost)

O'Sullivan's post-therapy interviews are a mind-boggling wonder of pop-psychology-speak (well, the only one I saw this week anyway).

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago) link

...9:8 now, with 18th under way

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago) link

Ain't that entertainment -- 9:9, uhhhhh!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

That was some red, eh?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago) link

This could be Hunter's chance now, I reckon.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago) link

We should commentate. You be Willie Thorne.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:44 (twenty years ago) link

I'm thingy from the Jim Davidson show. With the beard.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think Hunter can win the frame at this visit.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

What will he do here?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

Not bad. Nothing left on here.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago) link

Lots of balls near the cushions (I'm plagiarising here).

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:46 (twenty years ago) link

What does that mean, Willie?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

WHAT A MISS!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

HE'S LEFT IT!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

MATCH-WINNING CHANCE!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

THE BLONDE GIRL COVERS EYES!

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago) link

Excellent response from Selby after another excellent break by Brecel. He had to make it with balk colours at the beginning.

Two frames shared.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 18:42 (eleven months ago) link

they've both got the jitters.

ledge, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:15 (eleven months ago) link

Great clearance from Selby..

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:20 (eleven months ago) link

Beautiful opening shot from Selby, nothing but net

crisp, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:24 (eleven months ago) link

If he gets another 147 does he get 2/3rds of the prize money?

crisp, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:26 (eleven months ago) link

Boo

crisp, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:27 (eleven months ago) link

Shaun Murphy is so annoying

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:31 (eleven months ago) link

One visit snooker from Selby. 16-13 at the interval.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:32 (eleven months ago) link

Glad Murphy is off, do prefer Hendry.

OTOH Virgo is on for Dennis Taylor.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 19:57 (eleven months ago) link

Selby is getting stronger

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:06 (eleven months ago) link

16-14..

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:14 (eleven months ago) link

flukey bastard!

this is why I hate sport.

ledge, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:17 (eleven months ago) link

He wasn't going to leave anything tbh. It happens!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:20 (eleven months ago) link

Just had to check that Jean van de Velde wasn't also Belgian (he was French).

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Monday, 1 May 2023 20:24 (eleven months ago) link

Lol that wouldn't be the same thing anyway.

Brecel is in trouble. Did say if this goes close I think it's Selby and it's sadly proving to be the case.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:28 (eleven months ago) link

is he worse than Higgins? nobody is but

imago, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:31 (eleven months ago) link

Selby and Higgins are both all time greats lol

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:33 (eleven months ago) link

give up on the long pots ffs

ledge, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:33 (eleven months ago) link

Brecel's game is looking very shabby at the moment. He said he doesn't use a B game but I don't think he has one.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:34 (eleven months ago) link

Now..

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:34 (eleven months ago) link

Ok that 50 break could be what Brecel needs.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:42 (eleven months ago) link

blimey, a lot going on here. It's Brecel's to lose now

calzino, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:47 (eleven months ago) link

Selby flukes that red then misses the brown...snookers required

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:48 (eleven months ago) link

Brecel one away

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:50 (eleven months ago) link

Brecel played some really good safety in that one

imago, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:51 (eleven months ago) link

I meant worse than Higgins in terms of their ineluctable grit, their monstrosity

imago, Monday, 1 May 2023 20:52 (eleven months ago) link

supoib

contrapuntal aversion (Noodle Vague), Monday, 1 May 2023 21:07 (eleven months ago) link

Awesome!

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:07 (eleven months ago) link

you love to see it.

Fizzles, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:07 (eleven months ago) link

Great tournament

nxd, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:09 (eleven months ago) link

heartwarming stuff

ledge, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:10 (eleven months ago) link

Fantastic!

Another one I can't stand is Hazel Irvine. Imagine going through all that and then you've got this idiot to deal with.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:13 (eleven months ago) link

what a nice chap

imago, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:15 (eleven months ago) link

he didn't get Selbied, so now he's getting Hazeled.

StanM, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:16 (eleven months ago) link

What's the Selby and Vicky thing?

Covfefe and TV (ken c), Monday, 1 May 2023 21:18 (eleven months ago) link

That was weird. I know Selby has spoken of mental health issues.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:19 (eleven months ago) link

I recall one year when Selby won it and was visibly depressed throughout the whole post-match, he clearly has his demons, but it feels like this is physical health maybe

Here's to more snooker like how Brecel and Si play it

imago, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:25 (eleven months ago) link

he bounced back from a serious burnout iirc

StanM, Monday, 1 May 2023 21:25 (eleven months ago) link

seven months pass...

I watched the Ronnie Amazon documentary, *The Edge of Everything*. I have an instinctive emotional response to Ronnie at the best of times and found this moving - particularly as the whole thing is inevitably organised around the central wound of his dad's imprisonment. Curious to note how similar Ronnie's story is to Beckham's (whose name is on the credits as an executive producer) - how driven they both are by strong father figures and how both seem to seek father figures in their lives, albeit in Ronnie's case, the father figures seem generally more benevolent (Ronnie Wood, Damien Hirst, Jimmy White and his psychologist Steve Peters).

On the downside, it doesn't need to be the best part of two hours, and the snooker on show is oddly neutered. There's lots of Ronnie self-analysing in hotel rooms. I liked the use of the close mic during in the 2022 World Championships; there are times when you can hear the squeak of his shoes amid the muttering and cursing.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 9 December 2023 15:14 (four months ago) link
