"So my daughter CocoBean has been taking to a...g-g-GHOST!?!"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Buzz around the magazine industry is that the upcoming issue of Sam Goody's in-house magazine Request will contain a controversial interview where Courtney Cox reveals that she believes that NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon kidnapped her daughter, Coco Cox-Arquette, and filmed a D.I.Y. "AIDS is good for you" PSA with rock spawn Kim Stewart.

ten years pass...

I've settled into being agnostic when it comes to whether or not Kurt was murdered, thinking about it just puts me in a bad mood... I think there are equally compelling arguments on both sides. But these new pictures of the gun he used are really fucking me up... Look at how long that thing is. How the fuck do you shoot yourself in the head with that thing without using your toe? (he had his shoes on...)

otm. that's insane. you would have to be stretch armstrong.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 16:56 (eight years ago) link

they should have had Sarah Palin pose with it

There was a hole bunch of problems whit his campaigns (crüt), Friday, 18 March 2016 17:12 (eight years ago) link

did they ever explain how they thought he used that gun? there is one way I can think of to pull the trigger, but it's sort of difficult and there would be evidence that this was the method.

Poliopolice, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:18 (eight years ago) link

the explanation was he lied on his back and shot himself in the mouth using his thumb to pull the trigger... fucking impossible with that thing! the SOAKED IN BLEACH documentary debunks the physics of the official explanation...that doc has some problems (mostly the cheesy, unnecessary dramatic re-enactments), but it's arguments are pretty compelling.

flappy bird, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:36 (eight years ago) link

i could totes shoot myself with that gun but I have long arms. cobain was kind of short.

still don't think he was murdered.

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Friday, 18 March 2016 17:37 (eight years ago) link

xp its*

and yeah, another thing they talk about is how the shell casing was on the wrong side of his body, and how the lack of splatter/mess with his head suggests that he was already dead when the shot was fired (no blood pressure)...

flappy bird, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:38 (eight years ago) link

Kurt was short but he actually had pretty long arms. Kennedy wrote a book a couple years ago and she spent like three pages talking about his "gibbon-like arms"

flappy bird, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:39 (eight years ago) link

with satellite technology i'm certain we could find the secret pacific island on which he, Diana and Bob Marley are living.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:39 (eight years ago) link

if this was cobain's only gun and he really, really wanted to kill himself with that method, he'd have found a way.

nomar, Friday, 18 March 2016 17:41 (eight years ago) link

main issue with murder theory for me: if you wanted to murder a guy with a wicked heroin habit and recent history of a (perhaps intentional) drug overdose why wouldn't you just shoot him full of junk?

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Friday, 18 March 2016 17:41 (eight years ago) link

You mean the way Sid Vicious was murdered?

compelling argument

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 18 March 2016 18:40 (eight years ago) link

I'm not obsessing over it. It bugs me from time to time. Like I said, there's evidence on both sides. This is easily the most compelling piece of information that suggests he didn't pull the trigger. I agree with jim in glasgow though that, if someone wanted to kill Cobain, why not just incapacitate him and give him an OD? There's just so much fuzziness on both sides that it still doesn't sit well with me. Sorry. I don't think it's obvious what happened either way.

flappy bird, Friday, 18 March 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

I'd assume if you were going to plan and pull off a sophisticated staged suicide you wouldn't use a comically oversized gun, though i am not a criminal mastermind.

This has pretty much always been about demonising Courtney.

ftr I hate Courtney like nobody's business but I don't buy the conspiracy theories about her having him murdered (amusing as they are) for a second

courtney is a pretty terrible person tbf

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 18 March 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

and I am also a big fan of Nick Broomfield and even his doc makes it p clear how loony the theory that she had him killed is (while also making Courtney look like a horrible person)

courtney is horrible but too much of a human trainwreck to pull something like this off

Broomfield's Aileen Wuornos docs are better than anything Courtney ever touched

... including the trigger of that gun.

A Fifth Beatle Dies (Tom D.), Friday, 18 March 2016 20:02 (eight years ago) link

Nick Broomfield is quite possibly the worst documentary filmmaker out there. He's lucky he's got a gift for selecting interesting subject matter, because he seems like he has no clue what he's doing and it shows. The most ridiculous part of the Cobain doc is where El Duce says "I know who did it," and Broomfield doesn't even ask who. He just goes off into some other thing. WTF?

Poliopolice, Friday, 18 March 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

one of Soaked in Bleach's most interesting points was that all the heroin paraphernalia was neatly placed back in the box. like he shot up and then carefully put everything back in the box and managed this complicated maneuver while high as fuck on a near-lethal dose.

typically junkies aren't quite so agile.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 20:20 (eight years ago) link

lol learn to watch movies. Broomfield's clueless schtick is what gets his subjects to repeatedly and routinely incriminate themselves on camera, his films are as much about ridiculing documentary cliches and tropes as they are about their nominal subjects. His best film is probably the one about the prostitution ranch in Nevada, the end where he tries to buy the girls' freedom is heartbreaking.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 20:24 (eight years ago) link

ah yes, the completely unfounded theory about courtney killing kurt is definitely comparable to burroughs literally shooting jean vollmer in the head and then fleeing the country to avoid prosecution

qualx, Friday, 18 March 2016 20:45 (eight years ago) link

lol learn to watch movies.

thank you for the advice. it's not something i'd ever considered before, so the worldly perspective of someone who has "been there" is quite appreciated.

Broomfield's clueless schtick is what gets his subjects to repeatedly and routinely incriminate themselves on camera, his films are as much about ridiculing documentary cliches and tropes as they are about their nominal subjects.

I've seen 2-3 of his documentaries and I never once got the impression that his cluelessness is a studied act to elicit unguarded responses. If it works, it seems like a complete accident.

Poliopolice, Saturday, 19 March 2016 00:01 (eight years ago) link

Broomfield's recent documentary on the LA Grim Sleeper serial killer is great - the only thing clueless is how shocked he is to discover how the systematic racism and bigotry is in the LAPD/DA Establishment.

I don't really understand why it's generally accepted that Courtney is a bad person. Everyone seems so certain of this and it always confuses me. All I know is that she made some really great records a couple of decades ago. And?

kraudive, Saturday, 19 March 2016 01:27 (eight years ago) link

what's your source for this claim? cleaning up yr works and being meticulous about it is actually super common among junkies who have a place to live. assuming he had a tolerance going, shoot up then neatly put away all his shit neatly is exactly what I'd expect.

it's in the movie. "Soaked in Bleach" is a movie. as has been helpfully pointed out in this thread:
