No it's us who are poncey, I mean men who spray perfume on themselves but need to use this special "man-word". For Christ's sake.

Tracer, teach me in the ways of your manword.

Only if you ask nicely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned will you loosen my black mandals?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Darling.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's the perfume I'm wearing, isn't it?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Mandalwood"

Did it ever occur to you that man cologne is actually the same proportion parfum-to-other as the French old-woman cologne you speak of, Tracer Hand? DID YOU?

i have to admit i like smelling nice perfume but it's not really a sexual thing, it doesn't attract me to someone or even necessarily make me notice them, it's just a kind of wafting nice thing that cheers me up a little so long as it's not too strong.

the downside of perfume obv is that it gets stale, and the other day i was on a crowded metro with seemingly ten different types of stale perfume in the air and i wanted to vomit.

thank you.

i always wear rapture and have for years. i love it. if it gets discontinued i will bomb the victoria's secret headquarters.

Escada Sentiment for Men, these days -- "green lime, nutmeg, pink peppercorn, sandalwood, and cedar" -- which surprised me because it isn't the sort of thing I thought I would wear, but it works on me. Kenneth Cole Black, which I actually bought first because it is the kind of thing I thought I would wear, is terrible after I've worn it for half an hour or so, and gives my girlfriend migraines.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 December 2003 09:09 (twenty years ago) link

Zirh cologne on occasion.

I've heard good things about Ralph Lauren Purple Label, but I can't find anywhere that sells it around here.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 8 December 2003 09:11 (twenty years ago) link

so i just went to a friend's show, and i was behind the stage drinking beer with some other friends (all ages/no drinking venue). when the first band's set ended, they walked back and the guitar player said, "oh emily, i thought i smelled you"! and hugged me. does this mean i wear too much perfume?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 8 December 2003 09:32 (twenty years ago) link

I wore Benneton's Colors from adolescence through college, at which point I decided it was time to stop smelling like the 80s. I still like it though, and I think I still have a bottle. Now I wear Isabella Rossellini's MANIFESTO, which is the best perfume name ever. Here's the description. I never see it offered anywhere now but it takes me a decade to get through a bottle so no matter.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:08 (twenty years ago) link

i like l'eau d'issey.

but i hardly wear any, since i'm phobic about wearing too much.

i've been thinking of getting something new. i like burberry brit, but hate the marketing campaign and the bottle. any ideas?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:20 (twenty years ago) link

I hate most perfumes, and I'm not completely happy with MANIFESTO because the floral notes linger longer than the woody/green notes, and so the scent becomes a little too old-lady over time. If anyone has recommendations for a non-sweet woody/green/oriental, pls share.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:21 (twenty years ago) link

The non-sweet part is the hard part, I think, but Bvlgari maybe?

Aqua de Parma.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I have an Eau de Cologne strength scent called Sieste made by Fragonard in Grasse. My gf says it smells exactly like some brand name eau de cologne but I can't think of which one. I have a great fondness for Bel Ami by Hermès.

The office secretary just dropped a perfume bomb in our office and it's suffocating. I'm having shallow breath and narrowness of vision. It might have well have been sarin nerve gas.

Drake Beardo (cprek), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Turns out is extremely perfumey lotion. It's awful. The bottle needs a warning label against usage indoors.

Despite the overly purple presentation, I'm so far very happy with everything I've seen from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (which has a cult-ish following and which, because it lags so much on filling orders, is best sampled by searching Ebay).

Within minutes of my putting Haunted on my hand to test it, Gretchen (a cat, fwiw, not a maid from Benson) jumped up on the couch next to me, sniffed my hand, and laid her head down on it and went to sleep. Your mileage will vary.

(I also like Demeter, if for no other reason than that I can do stupid writerly things like wearing Bourbon and Paperback and smelling like someone spilled bourbon in a used bookstore.)

Sometimes I wear L'air Du Temps, but not today.

QUORUM???? for people who find robert's rules of order sexy????

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:19 (nineteen years ago) link

2005 "what do you smell like" update: I have a crazy amount of options, partly because of a Penhaligons sample case that never seems to deplete, and partly because of having dribs and drabs left of things that aren't entirely empty yet. Penhaligons Endymion, Demeter Bourbon (Thunderstorm smells like a dead basement), Escada Casual Friday, Paloma Picasso Minotaure, and Lolita Lempicka for Men, my girlfriend's nostalgic favorite. And now I've got a dozen BPAL samples, some for me and some for her.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Everyday I wear a sandalwood/rose/spice combo from Bath & Body Works: it's not sweet, which I destest in perfume. I really like the new Prada scent, and may ask for it as a gift at some point.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Today I am wearin=g Escada Rockin Rio which smells so much like passionfruit that I want to lick myself.

I will not, however.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Someone gave me some Eau d'Orange Verte by Hermès when I was in Paris in November and I've been wearing it since.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

From now on, I'm only going to buy colognes and perfumes based on the ads and packaging.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Somebody gave me Chanel Egoiste Platinum which smells fancy.

Today I am wearin=g Escada Rockin Rio which smells so much like passionfruit that I want to lick myself.

!!

Escada came out with a bunch of new stuff over the past couple years, either this is one of em or there isn't a "for Men" version. (Which is maybe good. Do I want to smell like passionfruit? Maybe if I mixed it with the Bourbon.)

Actually, after seeing just how much the Demeter Bourbon does in fact smell like bourbon, I splashed some single-malt Scotch on myself to see what it would smell like. It smelled like I had wasted some really good Scotch.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

There are a few gin/juniper-based colognes. I like that scent.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago) link

If I only bought perfume based on packaging, it would be Kenzo Flower.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

spencer, wear quorum.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll check it out. What has their advertising signified?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

It's new this year, I think, Tep. I keep making people smell me.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure what that means, spencer, but it smells rotten and has connotations of love-making ("quorum"!!!)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Interesting. Something you might have seen in the pages of Oui in 1980?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

so they call it 'quorum' because they can't call it 'quim'?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

quo-rum n.
1. The minimal number of officers and members of a committee or organization, usually a majority, who must be present for valid sex transaction of business.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Is that all sex is to people? *shakes head*
