Incidentally, if I'm comparing 'Biology' to any Japanese pop song, it should definitely be Kahimi Karie's 'Le Roi Soleil' (produced by Cornelius and written by Momus, obv.), which it is actually very similar to in execution and basic elements (blues piano excepted).

i listened to this again and the sound which irritated me wasn't a jangly guitar, it was the really awful drums which go at a completely different tempo to the rest of the song which i just heard as acoustic guitars because the mp3 is so shoddy.
there is still nothing about the arrangement which is right, apart from the piano which is buried anyway.
it sounds like a chaz church demo.

barima, do you like 'bruised'? that is my favourite new sugababes song (you are right about the greatness of 'red dress' though)

It's very good ("In the war with you!"), but you know how much I heart Mutya and the other two anyway (watched 'em on Frank Skinner last night and decided I could also be persuaded to switch to the Keisha side some day). I revived the Taller thread just to reiterate how much I love the album - I've given every song the highest rating on iTunes, just as I have for One Touch.
My 'Biology' mp3 isn't hi-quality either, but I feel it's nice to give a damn about GA once in a while - I have enough stress on without venting it at pop singers. I think, Alex et al, that you should find that Kahimi Karie song, not least 'cause I think it's yet another example of Higgins' secret Cornelius fandom we're seeing here.

i think the only misstep on the sugababes album is the cover of 'obsession', oh and i can't remember anything about 'better'.
― The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link
I think the one misstep on Taller is actually "It Ain't Easy," which I find rather annoying.
(Thread derailment alert!)

"it ain't easy being my own personal jesus" => sugababes as ego-driven monsters of highest order (esp mutya) => awesome.
― The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:17 (eighteen years ago) link
Yes, but I don't especially like "Personal Jesus" either -- the tune is really very monotonous when you get down to it.

But he doesn't even sing on it. You'd probably like his less indie-based mid 90s pop more than what you've heard - actually, what have you heard?

Their arrangements are always a right mess! How does this usually go unmentioned? Meh. I do know better than to post on these threads really, I suppose I just want to make it clear that when the backlash finally comes, I always thought they were mostly rubbish.
Hopefully Nadine's solo career (will it ever arrive?) will make the dreary Rachbot Stevens redundant though.
― fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:57 (eighteen years ago) link
yeah, some of their arrangements have been messy before; it's when they're sleek and shiny that they're best ('the show', 'graffiti my soul') because it magnifies the girls' brash karaoke piss-up voices.

Perhaps this is the repressed FHM male in me but I'd just really like to see a genuinely flaming HOT pop star coming from the UK for a change. Sure Nadine airbrushes well, but she's also got something ballsy about her? Is that just me? She doesn't come across icky-feminine-wiles-user (Britney, Jessica, the list is endless) nor is she happily cold & cruel seeming (Rachel... I'm sure there are more examples). Gah. Maybe I should write her a song :)
the girls' brash karaoke piss-up voices Truly they are the heirs to the Spice crown! Aww... I'm such a sour piss about this aren't I? Okay, maybe I just don't get it/enjoy it/not my thing :( I'll stop whining if I can. I just find them so bafflingly hard to really like.

I maybe haven't paid close enough attention to her voice, if it's even possible (can't think now if I've seen them not miming or not...) well, she gives off the illusion of being the best anyway. I must have got this idea from somewhere.
― fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:10 (eighteen years ago) link
Yes. Well spotted.
Rachel's voice is a tool, or a component to be utilised for gain or even just to have its own limitations sidestepped within her songs.. Nadine's is more like a weapon - it's alternatively bludgeoning and sharp and does absolutely nothing for me.

re: 'biology', i listened to it AGAIN and realised i quite like the bluesy bit because that's the only bit that fucking annoying drum sound stops.
