dan (dan), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 19:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I feel you, dan. "I Thank You" was also criminally ignored. I just wasn't fast enough on the draw.

no reggae, except for 'Under Mi Sleng Teng' - famous for not having a bassline????

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a tragedy that the Beatles' "Rain" wasn't mentioned. Paul McCartney's best work.

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 20:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alton Ellis is reggae...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

[Rocksteady actually ;)]

didn't spot him there. still should be more than one though! (i guess you could include Beats International, since it's a common reggae bassline the Clash were using)

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Even more interesting, no one mentioned Pink Floyd's "Money". I'd add that, The Charlatans' "I Don't Want To See The Sights", and The Jam's "In The City"

Xibalba (xibalba), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

no Bootsy?

The Scott Grooves record replays a Bootsy bassline from the Parliament song of the same name, but it's not quite the same, no.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

no reggae, except for 'Under Mi Sleng Teng' - famous for not having a bassline???? - how low do you have to go to call it a bassline?

jk_ (jk@gabba), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

THEME FROM SEINFELD

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 22:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

[i think it's cos they're not ordered consistently - some are artist first, some the other way round. very hard to read!]

michael (michael), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

for a bassline thread, this is extremely dance music unfriendly (and no afghan acid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 23:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 09:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

*sob* fuck, can't believe I missed this one. Heart-rending. Where were The Verve? No 'Apache Rose Peacock'? No 'If You Have To Ask?'

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 10:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

weird. 100 top basslines and hardly any dance or reggae. Shoud be called 'top 100 basslines in genres for which the bass is little more than a backing instrument'.

I'm sorry, but any top 100 without

I should've Known Better - Mica Paris
Black Disciples - Burning Spear
Lucky - Lewis Taylor
No doubt about it - Hot Chocolate
Lost in music - Chic or
Po;ice and Thieves - the Clash

Is a top 94.

jon (jon), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jon, I was about to mention Lucky.

So if Superstitious is no.116 (obv sh/be much higher) then...

122. Primal Scream - Kill all hippies (or just about anything from xtrmntr)

Roger, which Verve were you thinking?

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 11:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

122-200. Behind the Counter - The Fall

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Virtually anything off A Northern Soul; from the loping opening intro on 'New Decade' and on through to the swinging 'Life's An Ocean' and the lilting 'Stormy Coulds' outro Simon Jones is like a fucking hypnotist on that album and the consistent motifs and patterns that crop up throught the piece are a lesson in how to tie up an album.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Aaaaah. This is such a travesty it's untrue. 90% rock bands in a best bassline list? And no disco whatsoever?!? My shameful omissions:

Evelyn King - "Shame"
Aaliyah - "Try again"
Jermaine Jackson - "Erucu"
Whatnauts - "Help is on the way"
Remarc - "RIP"
Lone Ranger - "Barnabas Collins"
First Choice - "Dr Love"

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bad Luck - Harlold Melvin and The Blue Notes

First Choice - Let No Man Put Asunder same bassline as Steve Silk Hurley - 'Jack Your Body

Daft Punk - Around the World

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 16:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think that most people on this thread, myself included, interpreted "bassline" as something that a human being played on an actual bass guitar.
