Damn, with this and the obviously thrilling discussion on another thread of Felicity revisiting London, I can just see me doing this (calling her Felicity) on my next date. It's not until next week, so with luck the likelihood will fade.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I too shall call my next date "Felicity."

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Must we use the word "date"?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

what is wrong with that word, Mary?

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's just so ugh

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, it's like calling an Asian person "an Asian." Objectifying.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

How about "sexual liasion"?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

in reference to a person or an activity? Or both? And what should I call her then? Don't wanna use her name here, and I think it's way too early to be saying "girlfriend" (yikes!)...

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

May 1, 2003, henceforth you shall be known as "Felicity."

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

but we didn't have sexual liasons last night, Ally! She's sick.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

...like into S&M, right?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Dating" just implies that its something you're doing serially -- like, on to the next one, on to the next one.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Guessing by our previous sexual liason, I'm guessing no.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

that was to Ally.

Well, I may be going on a date with another girl next week, Mary, so maybe it is something I'm doing serially.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

And what should I call her then? Don't wanna use her name here,

You were the one who brought her up. We're not insisting you talk about her at all or anything. We just said we saw you!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno -- I don't think serial dating is anything to brag about.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

My dating has been a bit like that lately (the serial thing). It's not what I want, so I hope I can get something regular going with someone soon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's not something to brag about. It's something that makes you want to kill all other people in the world so you can be left alone happily! I'm not going out with boys anymore, I put my foot down.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I want to see Serial Mom.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not bragging! Damn, I feel really bad now.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

My favorite thing-to-call-yr-love-interest (this one works better if yr love interest is a lady), stolen straight from The Big Lebowski = "special ladyfriend"...not quite as informal and "ugh" as "date", not quite as "oh God THE PRESSURE!" as saying "girlfriend", JUST RIGHT.

*meanwhile, my special ladyfriend hasn't called/returned-my-calls in days, I'm beginning think she's lost interest...BUMMAH*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I call them all "this guy I'm sleeping with". It's more classy that way.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

"We ran into hstencil and the guy Ally's sleeping with on Ave. A."

oh yes, much better.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

WHAT IS HE DOING WITH THE PEOPLE IN MY ENGLISH CLASS??????? I DEMAND EXPLICAR!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

May 1, 2003: henceforth, you shall be known as "this guy Ally's sleeping with."

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am gonna go cry now. Thanks.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

What's wrong with the term "date"? It's so concise and formal, everything else is just horribly ambiguous and vague. Bring back "pinning" and "going steady" please.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't cry, stencil. Have a good meeting.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

"This guy I'm sleeping with" is totally nonvague, actually. It borders on way too much information.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually like the etymological ramifications of calling one's dates "felicities," like, "Sorry, I'm busy that night, I have a felicity," or "Thanks for inviting me, do you mind if I bring a felicity?"

I also recently had an editor ask me to replace the use of "date" as a verb, because it sounded "formal!"

Personally, I've always been slightly impressed by people's serial-dating. Yes, I understand it could be the result of no relationship ever really taking off, but it also creates the impression that they're just sampling pickily around, like they're going to try out every person possible before deciding on one. This is sort of daunting in process, of course, because you realize you're going to have to exhibit a certain level of dating professionalism to avoid getting dropped: afterwards you feel like an ill-fitting shirt or one of those little pink Baskin-Robbins tasting spoons, briefly examined and then passed on. Some people are just so adept at this, like waiter, bring me another!

Sometimes I think I'd like to try this, briefly, if only so I could be one of those people who's dated everyone. You could ask me about anyone in the city, and I'd just make that little face and go "Ahh, yeah, she's ... interesting."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know why I posted all of that. In the article, by the way, I changed "date" to "make a sex-poodle of."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Date" seems so embarassing. Are we living in the fifties? Bring back "pimping" please.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

listen to mary everyone. she makes sense ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mary in anti-50s prep-talk genuine shocker!!!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Who, her? I made a sex-poodle of her for a while, but she ended up making a sex-poodle of one of my friends."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

(I think I still prefer "date".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, can I say me & this girl are "feliciting"? That sounds awfully close to another favorite word of mine.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I guess if you are on a date there's all this pressure -- to make small talk, who's gonna pay...Pressure = bad

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

how bout 'potential-fuck meet'. 'I'm goin on a potential-fuck meet w/this girl tonite'. ('fuck meet' was from some thread awhile ago, no?)

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Fuck meet" sounds like "track meet" = there's that dag-blasted COMPETITION vibe abain. Howevah, it also has that endurance-implication to it, which makes it totally worthy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

(I actually agree with Mary, though I do think there are equally problematic aspects of the whole thing where people are all "friends" and "hang out" and then magically just "sleep together." But yes, the formality of the "date" is pretty much not a good thing, and feeds into that sort of cowing professional good-at-dating thing that I fear / admire / etc.)

(Oh, but you still need a word for people in your friendship orbit who you are semi getting it on with but are not your proper "girlfriend" or "boyfriend." Personally I like "girlperson" and "boyperson" for all indeterminate situations.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

how bout 'person I fuck'?

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

'fuck partner'?
'fuck friend'?
'fucky fuck fuck fuck'?

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

fuckee

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

We should call dates "liaisons"!

Would you like to liase with me on this project?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

But all the things bad about the word 'date' make it a pretty accurate description of, for instance, what I went on last week or have set up for next week. I don't say this as a good thing - I was much happier for most of the 23 years I was with one woman, so not really 'dating' - but it's the way it is, and it's okay with me for the moment.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think boyfriend/girlfriend sounds silly too though I guess I use it for convenience.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

how about "all-most girlfriend, not quite sure, don't wanna tempt fate".

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago) link
