love to tim, hope the surgery goes well. x

jed_, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 10:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Hi all - thanks again for the kind thoughts. I am back from surgery which went successfully (a brief and unpleasant chest infection notwithstanding) and now have a month off work in which to waste time on ILX! Kinda glad I missed these "Animal Collective Wars" though.

Tim F, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha too true. Welcome back, great to hear!

And that Electrik Red review is great.

I've introduced around 15 people I know to them in the last month thanks to you and the rest of the Rnb crew.

Congratulations Tim!

Have you heard this mix?

http://www.mixcloud.com/unbongo/unknown-soulja-un-bongo-mix-2-november-2009/

It's kind of my favorite thing in the world right now.. I don't even know what kind of music this is supposed to be. To my ears it sounds a lot like 2-step, a little like bassline, a bit like dubstep.. but what do I know?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Ot maybe this is the "UK funky" that everyone's been talking about

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Whatever it is, i freaking love it

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean there's also some rap in there

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

And some dancehall. Judging by the tracklisting that's a fairly wide-ranging FACT-esque mix with bits of everything you mention in there. There's probably some funky in there as well although there aren't any names I recognise.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:50 (fourteen years ago) link

that electrik red review is great!

brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Jesus, Mess + Noise is like an AU P4K skin. Scary.

Tim, I love the series and I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with medical issues. Good on you.

cee-oh-tee-tee, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Tracer, yeah that mix looks very FACT-y - there's lots of mixes floating around the internet from people like Julio Bashmore, Bok Bok, Princess, Mosca, Dub Boy and the like that cover similar ground. I haven't listened to that yet but how amazing is Major Notes' "Holy Ghost" (which is UK funky - most of the rest isn't but in related territory)? The bit when the vocal comes in toward the end is just A++++.

Chris are you in Australia now? Or have you just seen the first season? I'm really looking forward to Season 2 becoming available on the internet as I (like to) think it's much better. Mess + Noise is a bit scary, yes! I like to think we won them over at least a little bit.

I'm curious what you would might have to say about this Japanese dance pop song (3,117,287 views):

When does Tim Finney's first book come out?

MikoMcha, Saturday, 15 November 2014 09:44 (nine years ago) link

six years pass...

Is Tim Finney now a big shot lawyer? I was looking for recent music writeups and came up empty-handed. There is however a very well-to-do-looking fellow of his namesake listed as being director of a law firm in Melbourne. Nothing on music or on Pitchfork in years, though!

hbbh111, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 08:46 (two years ago) link

Yeah I don't write professionally any more, but still try to do year-end write ups here.

Tim F, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:04 (two years ago) link

Tim Finney why haven’t you made a 2021 playlist on spotify?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:09 (two years ago) link

There is however a very well-to-do-looking fellow

That's all you needed to say, really. Not only do I remember all of us on a.m.a. going "What the hell, he's younger than all of us by some years and still knows nearly everything" back in the late nineties, but when I finally met the good man in 2002 I then thought "This is ridiculous, he's also better looking than all of us too!"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 00:25 (two years ago) link

spotify playlist is coming

Tim F, Wednesday, 28 April 2021 05:04 (two years ago) link

Tim F does not exit, he's a phantasm created by the ILX lab in the hopes of teasing us with the perfect listener and chap.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 April 2021 09:33 (two years ago) link

Excelente!

Are they ranked? If Olof Dreijer is your #1 I love that choice and it’s one of the couple of songs we overlap! I see at least 10 songs in there which are also in mine so that’s a bigger number than in past years and also I see several which I had never heard before.

Great looking list so far

Instant love on the Cassandra Jenkins track. Thanks for these discoveries!

this playlist fucking rules thanks tim for sharing!

monotony, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 23:56 (two years ago) link

Thanks all.

The list isn't ranked and I'm not sure how I would go about that if I wanted to. It's instead sequenced with a rather loose view of flow in mind but I have no idea whether it works for anyone else.
