lol i had a dream last night that they were running an advert on tv for gta multiplayer, which showed hundreds of people (in game) dressed exactly the same all pouring out the back of an ice cream truck, and then someone pushing a shopping trolley with more people in the trolley. They all looked like they were having fun at least.

I was tood on hanger lane platform last night and a pigeon was cooing behind me, cue me looking round to try and take out the bugger.

Porkpie, Saturday, 19 July 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

ok i had a go on multiplayer today, it was okay. I like the car jack games.

i had a long go on free roam, which was more interesting. some dude came up to me and I'm sure he had a monkey head. And he was able to speak to me, in a generic greeting kind of way - how'd he do that ?

Ste, Saturday, 19 July 2008 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

and a petrol bomb dropped from a moving car is a great weapon in multiplayer

Ste, Saturday, 19 July 2008 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

top left trigger (i forget the silly names they give these buttons) for generic greeting, if yer lucky it occasionally comes up with something obscene.

I came across a very random ped sitting on the wall of one of the freeways, smoking a cigarette, so i did the decent thing and shot her. The physics was brilliant, the shot sent her toppelling backwards over the wall and tumbling down the cliff side into the water.

wot a larf

Does anybody on here play multiplayer for PS3? I can't go get any other games just yet, and would like to develop a team of folks I know to go take on groups of randoms.

I'm loving Team Mafyia work, as well as turf war, but don't have enough people to populate a large team.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 25 July 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i'm gonna be online in a few minutes, never played team mafiya though.

after a typical chaos causing expedition in Time Square, I noticed a cop decided to give chase by commandeering a bus! Was kinda funny because I was in a bus too.

Ste, Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:49 (fifteen years ago) link

and i got slightly worried with my friend who came around last night, she was all "hit him, knock him to the floor, don't kill him just stand near him and frighten him, now follow him yeah yeah intimidate him, now trip him up, he's on the floor now kick him! " etc

err..

I got this the first time I logged in off the first guy I killed O_O He/she was terrible. Crashed their car right be and just sat there as I gunned 'em down.

bnw, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Heh heh. Never gets old.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 04:03 (fifteen years ago) link

ultimately, do we all agree this was sort of a let-down?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I'm considering selling my copy unless I can really get into the multi stuff soon

Euler, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a fine game, but the ridiculously positive reviews kinda hurt it.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i got what i wanted and more besides. do not understand the problems that people have with this game. lots of little quibbles, some more legitimate than others, that don't add up to anything nearly enough to break the game. and the mp onilne is probabaly the best and most varied i have experience.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

It has been a let-down.

The graphics are great, but it wasn't GTA-y enough for me.

It was never the violence that appealed to me really. It was the humor of it, and the way a game about a South-Central gangsta could turn into a Repo Man Area 51 hijinx caper with hippies and Elvis.

Some folks have said that things like the rocket booster pack was too over the top, but exploring four boroughs of a city that offers pretty much the same wet docks and project flophouses in each nook and cranny just didn't do it for me. I liked flying a helicopter from Los Santos across Mt. Shasta to San Fierro, or hitting a desert plateau at sunrise with Humble Pie roaring in the background.

I dunno. I can't stop saying how great everything looks in GTA4. But yeah, somehow it was a let-down.

(Multiplayer would be fun, but I can't keep up with those players born during the Bush I administration.)

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i went through a great 'let down' feeling of this game just after the final mission, griping about lots of stuff that should have been included, and how different it was to previous gta's.

i was still playing it though, and now i'm back to loving it again.

On the whole I haven't been let down.

Ste, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

and yeah, even though i don't multiplay it all that much - the multiplayer modes are the best i've seen in any game

Ste, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

As with most of the GTA games they did a PERFECT job of making me super interested, and LOVING the first part of it, but by the end I merely... liked it? And once I beat it it left NO taste in my mouth. Barely thought about it again post-beating. The only exception was San Andreas. Have I said this before? I may have.

Will M., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I still like it a lot but haven't finished it.

needs more fun side missions. less "go drink with Dwayne or he's gonna send you a sad face message." more environmental changes that stick. more driving missions that are kill or be killed. and the mission redo part needs the fast forward option back.

bnw, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I've played three GTAs (III, Vice City, IV), and IV is the only one I've liked enough to play for more than a few hours. Maybe it was the slightly more sympathetic character, or the better soundtrack options, or improved graphics, but I like IV more than I thought I would. It's definitely not the controls, which were my biggest problem with the older ones, and which were only slightly improved with IV.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

there was some great stuff for sure but it really felt like a beautifully-constructed set with nothing to do

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

it's kind of evil to present you with a city that seems so realistic except you can't really do ANYTHING with it besides knock people over, get chased by cops, and trigger animations at various businesses. and not even that many of them.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link

it LOOKS like a world but doesn't feel like one. like a weird purgatory.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

ha WELCOME TO NEW JERSEY

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, but doesn't the "realistic world w/ nothing to do" complaint fit with the previous GTAs, too?

isn't that also one of the half-assed defenses of No More Heroes' lackluster overworld, that it's a parody of how little freedom the various GTA's open-world environments actually provide you with?

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link

One thing this game got me thinking about is how I should go back and start playing "The Warriors" again.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

amazes me how the cops can find a path to you. Like in playboys house, the cops will climb the stairs in the building opposite just to take a pop at you.

i've been enjoying the vigilante gang-warfare missions lately, these and the criminals on foot missions are a great way to top up your weapons.

and held a huge seige in my house on broker last night, just standing inside loose aiming at the door with shotgun and pistols. Many many dead and some horrific explosions outside sending policemen flying through the door. It all ended when one plucky cop just came running in all the way up to me and knocked me down with the butt of his rifle.

much fun still

Ste, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I've hit a bit of a Call Of Duty 4 wall so I picked this up again this week. I wish I liked it more than I do. I think my biggest problem with it is that I find the controls just so awkward. Maybe I just need to spend more time with it.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 09:59 (fifteen years ago) link

well i've played this thing for hours and I'm still grumbling with some of the combat controls tbh. driving is a doddle now though.

Ste, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I love driving, the cars handle beautifully. Shooting while driving though - that's a different matter.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:16 (fifteen years ago) link

i hate not being able to aim without firing off a round, with shooting from cars.

sometimes the button response in combat becomes ridiculous when things get busy on screen, and you end up pressing overly much - obv causing more stress.

Ste, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 10:30 (fifteen years ago) link

One thing that I do ALL THE FUCKING TIME is jumping out of moving cars. Why do I keep pressing that triangle button? Why??

Ste, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:26 (fifteen years ago) link

or "type 'gg 16000' in the console for extra money!"

onimo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:36 (fifteen years ago) link

what does that do?

Ste, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:41 (fifteen years ago) link

gg kills the game

onimo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:45 (fifteen years ago) link

(counterstrike, that is)

onimo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:45 (fifteen years ago) link

*might have been in CS 1.3 or something, haven't tried it in years.

onimo, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Just looked it up. gg tried to run a demo in Game Gauge mode - you put 16000 or whatever after it and it exits your current game with a "demo not found" error.

So you'd get
noob: how come you guys all have better guns than me
onimo: we're using the cash cheat in the console, type 'gg 16000' in console to get 16000 dollars
noob has left the game
