i played 'up with people' on 6music once, at 830 on a monday morning. the fill-in DJ who hosted the show in Jupitus's absence was visibly displeased by the song.

The only pub I was in on Saturday was one in which I watched Villa-Spurs :-/

Anyway, this IS my first trip into the Oneidic sphere. They seem promising.

Puddle of Thudd (acoleuthic), Monday, 30 November 2009 13:33 (fourteen years ago) link

What the fuck is wrong with these people? It's fucking disco . . . Admittedly pretty fast, fuzzy disco but disco nonetheless . . .

XP: Sorry, another Louis from this board it was then.

Doran, Monday, 30 November 2009 13:34 (fourteen years ago) link

said stand-in DJ was very much of the Ocean Colour Scene school of musical diversity

WILLIM GARLOS CILLIAMS (stevie), Monday, 30 November 2009 13:39 (fourteen years ago) link

There's another? I must hunt him down and we must fight. That school of musical diversity persists? Mother of god.

Pubmeet fake Louis, oh no!

My Oneida album pick is "The Wedding" w. much love to "Each One Teach One" too, but I have not given "Rated O" the time I know it deserves

subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 30 November 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

okay, so i picked up Rated O the other day. holy shit this is great! by far by far BY FAR the best thing i've ever heard oneida do, like Each One Teach One made more and better longer louder crazier crazier world without end. on that note kinda funny how the MC who does vocals on the opening epic dub track even namechecks EOTO (each one a teacha waaaan).

surprised by the mixed reviews. i mean, if yr averse to epic length hammering on a single change (or chord!) this obviously isn't the band for you, but if yr at all interested in the space btwn heavy garage rock, noise & space/kraut hypnosis, this is the fucking GODHEAD. space ritual shit right here. three lps, each aesthetically/conceptually distinct, and all fucking fantastic. i even like "the human factor", which seems to be the sticking point/bellwether for folks who don't quite "get it". yeah, he's shrieking hoarsely for like five minutes, but it's kinda funny and the drumming is awesome.

SO glad i made time for this. instant top-of-the-heap album of the year contender, displacing a lot of potential favorites.

one use of "epic" would probably have sufficed

I love that track! celebration station step into the O

yeah, glad to be here, "the river" is such a fucking jam, just unreal

i don't know when i last had so much fun getting to know an album. listened twice yesterday, and am on my second round for this morning. i don't think there's a bad track on here. been a good year for crater head psyche shit (this, blues control, shit & shine, fuck buttons, lips).

Kid just emailed me the other day. He's sending me the triple vinyl. Stoked!

six months pass...

anybody heard kid millions' man forever lp? basically a drum solo record, with tons of tracks layered together until it turns into a big, blurry, throbbing mess. some very alien-sounding bass guitar from one of the sightings dudes, but otherwise just kits, kits and more kits, all pummeled within an inch of their lives. pretty unique and cool - reminds me of lightning bolt more than anything else, in the way these mushroom patterns emerge and disappear into a seething morass of noise. i can't image that 40 minutes of droney percussion fog is gonna do it for everybody, but it's working for me.

contenderizer, Friday, 25 June 2010 03:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Doubt it'll do it for me, tbh, but here's a NY Times story about it:

xhuxk, Sunday, 22 August 2010 03:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Forget what I said 7 years ago. Saw them Thursday w/ Kinski and The Lights opening. Oneida were a 5-piece, with another keyboard player, and Shaheen (ex ex-models, seconds) on 2nd guitar and vocals.

Oneida killed it, and Kid is the main reason, as stated several times above. Overheard at show: "dude is like Jaki from Can but on CRACK!"

show at the sunset (ballard) on thursday night was amazing by the way. missed the openers, but no loss. oneida were more than enough on their own. and yeah, kid, but the whole damn band, really. best live performance i've seen in quite some time.

Both openers were at their best too. Kinski's Chris Martin is becoming better and more confident as a singing frontman. Also new songs are Alpine-Static good.

But anyway, Oneida U HAZ LAAFS

Oh, man. Rated O would be my #1 album of the year this year, except it's last year's album. Aw, fuck it, it's still my album of the year.

I want more stuff like it. Lots more. It fills the need I've had for some years for a new NEU! album - that relentless propusliveness, mostly instrumental, "out there" but never spaced-out. It's hitting all the right neurons.

I've got NEU!, Can, Fela, and now this; what else fits the bill? Suggestions, anyone?

69, Thursday, 4 November 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

lot of recommendations for cave. not saying no, but if you're interested, aim for the hunt like devil/JAMZ album (dbl EP combo, whatever). best thing they've done so far, imo.

recent mother of fire EP has an oneida-ish quality here and there, but gothier, and not quite so rhythmically intense.

xp - did not know cave had a newer release than pure moods. must check that out ASAP

chewy, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

No, that's the first Cave release. They don't have anything new right now.
There may be some copies of a split cassette with Skarekrau Radio with a live set recorded by Grady Runyan at his record store in Sacramento in 2009.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

ok, mother of fire is not the title of an ep by the band cave, but rather a whole other band...?

chewy, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

correct. Mother of Fire record on De Stijl, I think.
the first Cave release is Hunt Like Devil/Jamz.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:59 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yeah, duh, should have been clearer. mother of fire is a minneapolis band that has a vague oneida-like quality buried somewhere in their sound. connection is tangential at best, and i'm probably the only one who'd make it. offered in response to staggerlee's request.

love this locked groove stuff as well and definitely check out circle! prospekt, sunrise, and tower are my faves. but don't start with tower - it's more on a terry riley tip.

anyway, there's tons of circle material out there and most of it is worthwhile.

best experienced live, tho.

loop might do the trick too. a gilded eternity is killer.

the recent no balls s/t lp (from 2009, I think?) hit a lot of these same buttons for me. but with more scuzz.
