Newport news as some great stuff - you just have to search a bit. Bonus is that it's pretty cheap.

I have a couple dresses form there.

i got a nice black winter/fall dress at Zara yesterday on supersale (and a new bag on sale elsewhere, whew finally! oh, the organization), but main discovery here is that the only sane time to ever shop at Zara is before 10:30am

Nice dress! I just bought two on ebay, and I've got a few in my modcloth cart.

kate78, Friday, 19 March 2010 03:19 (fourteen years ago) link

it looks more fitted on me bc i have bigger boobs. i think that model looks like she is playing dress up in her mom's clothes tbh.

oh mannnnn as soon as i can i am gonna be all up in modcloth's shit but atm my buying is strictly work-related :( (justifying this purchase because i got rid of 35 pieces at consignment shop yesterday and also hello new job = new wardrobe amirite???)

tehresa, Friday, 19 March 2010 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

It's always the boobs! Haven't wore a button-up shirt in years cos of the girls.

But yeah, new job def = new clothes. I'm selling a buncha crap on ebay and pouring it right back into the wardrobe. Circle of life, really. Wore a great denim shirtdress today that I got for $50 at anthro. Wish I had a pic to post...

kate78, Friday, 19 March 2010 05:04 (fourteen years ago) link

do you think it could be styled for work? i will go check that store on the way to my gym that i am pretty sure carries it...

tehresa, Friday, 19 March 2010 05:14 (fourteen years ago) link

totally! this store sells them with a matching tube top/bandeau, so that would give you back/bust coverage (the back is really low). the straps are really wide so you can wear it like a cap sleeve as well.

just1n3, Friday, 19 March 2010 05:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i also bought this from modcloth, for our pre-wedding day photo shoot:

it's so cute! i found the perfect short navy cardi to wear with it, and i'm gonna pair it with my biker boots (boots & dresses are my favouritest thing ever).

this his how i want to try and wear my wedding dress, if i can figure out a bra solution:

well that didn't work out quite how i wanted

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9-AHJRVLbA

just1n3, Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

gahhh my wedding dress didn't quite go how i expected it to, and i'm pretty disappointed: there was an issue with the middle of my bra showing at the front bc of the deep v which i thought i could easily solve on the day by putting in a few stitches to close the gap. totally didn't work well and the front looked really bad. wish i'd tried it first, but was so short on time. i think i'm gonna have the two long straps resewn so that they overlap more. also: the way i wanted to wear it didn't work out either - the shoulders kept falling down, which i was going to solve by using a pretty silver vintage sweater clip, but the clasps were too sharp and would've ripped the dress. so i ended up having to wear it a different way that didn't look so good in the back :( :(

just1n3, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm really sorry to hear that. The whole mix-and-wrap aspect doesn't sit well with me tbh because things that are jerry-rigged often don't work quite as imagined -- exactly that kind of thing. ;_;

If you have two vintage clip-on earrings, maybe they would make good shoulder clips to hold the material at least partly bunched up? Or for more structure, you could hand-sew the fabric into little bunches and hide your stitching w the earrings.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Plam14UGUAM/SnUMGL7T8HI/AAAAAAAAAAo/JRBfaqNNfEs/s400/McQueenDress.jpg

i meant to put this up a month ago and forgot about it, but it is on the cover of the UK glamour this month and I was reminded. Alexander McQueen at his finest.

mr. waffles (Nijoli), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

xp the problem was that the way i wanted to wear it - the two long pieces coming over the shoulders and then back around underneath the arms, then wrapped around the waist - meant that the tension was pulling the shoulders off. i figured using a sweater clip at the top of the back would use the counter-pulling of the shoulders to keep them up. i don't think the sweater clasp was long enough anyway.

i ended up doing it a way that my friend had suggested, which was similar but covered a lot of the back up and left me with a big ugly knot in the middle of the back.

basically, the lesson learned here is 'don't leave things to the last minute'. the dress itself is perfect, i just wish i'd had time to figure out the front, and i could have gotten it repaired pretty easily so that the front pieces gave me better coverage.

just1n3, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh i was pretty much in tears (lol bridezilla) as i was getting ready: my mum was USELESS and only made me feel worse about the whole thing, i really wish i'd just gotten ytth to come help me get ready instead :/

just1n3, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

awww. tbh i'd be surprised if any bride did not have some moment of wardrobe panic!

tehresa, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Nij, that McQueen is a dream.

J, I have narrow and sort of rounded shoulders and I spend about 3 hours a day just hauling bra straps back up, so I would never assume a shoulder wrap-around would work for me -- I'd at least cross the straps in the back. However it's a known fact that hardly any one notices these things except the wearer, and everyone else will probably have thought it was supposed to be exactly the way it was.

awwwww so sad about the wrap dress drama, but hey! most pictures of you will be from the front anyway and i'm sure you had bride's glow going on to hide all the fuss anyway. *hugs*!

two months pass...

ok so last weekend we were in LA and it was motherfucking hot and i was so damn uncomfortable in my cords, and my capri jean things didn't fit me right, and i felt like i was having to walk round sucking in my stupid belly. so i have decided that despite my ugly legs it's gonna be a dress-only summer: so much more comfortable, it makes up for the embarrassment of the whole world seeing my legs.
