fwiw if the mods are interested in fostering a better relationship w/the modded - and i have noticed recent sentiment in this direction - itd be good imo to mod dispassionately

you can be mad and post abt it and whatever but when a mod action is taken such as a ban or a thread lock i propose u all give a brief unemotional explanation of what you did and why you did it such as:

cankles has been temp banned for personal attacks

or

thread of missing cankels has been locked because...

indignation coming from a position of power is really not a good look

I can post links to the threads in question but there is nothing ambiguous about why cankles got banned (calling someone a self-important cooze is not conducive to retaining your posting rights) or why either of those threads were locked (blatantly picking fights with other posters because you are mad your friend got banned is not conducive to those threads remaining unlocked).

jhos, cankles used up pretty much every vestige of mod goodwill with his last sitewide ban. The only reason he's still here is because an incredibly vocal contingent like him. I, personally, am not going to cry any tears if a moderator was less-than-unrufflable when dealing with him, particularly since his offenses are blatantly obvious to anyone with a passing grasp on how to be polite to someone else.

ideally all that personality and passion and bias that every poster has would be dropped when you put on the moderator hat. being able to pull that off is why i would never be a good mod.

This is bias. Two threads got locked and someone got banned and immediately you are on the defensive. Instead of accepting any criticism, you and Dan jump in with how the critics are wrong and we don't understand the system and anyway, you're passionate posters who get things right almost always and it isn't realistic to think otherwise.

Whereas you could say: yeah, we will try to stay on top of the log with legit reasons.
