Yeah.

I do like the ability to lock in with auto aim and then slowly release into free aim. At least give me the ability to point the gun at who I'm chasing without waving the rifle in the air like it's an antenna.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I tried, what, 15 seconds of an auto-aim off games and cried "i cant do it! i cant do it!" and stomped off.

sunny successor, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:09 (fifteen years ago) link

playing hangman's noose and hanging around at the beginning shooting the swat team is good practice. i started off averaging < 10 kills and got up to > 20, and my deathmatch play definitely improved.

ledge, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

On which of the multi modes do you find it necessary to use the Mic? Because I kinda hate talking to 12 year olds over the mic, but I want to try e.g. cops and crooks.

Euler, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:16 (fifteen years ago) link

it's pretty handy for cops n crooks, vital for the three co-op modes (hangman's noose, bomb da base, deal breaker)

general dm aiming tips - get assault rifle, get cover (even crouching in open air removes yr radar blip i think), zoom in, aim for the head, short bursts (don't hold down the trigger), health reticule shows if yr aim is good so stop firing if you donit see it.

i still get one shot killed by dudes i've been pumping lead into for 30 seconds though ;_;

ledge, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

original Tomb Raider lock-on aiming system still the best

Tracer Hand, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:25 (fifteen years ago) link

god can you imagine shooting those spiders without it? I could barely see those things.

sunny successor, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't believe crouching removes your radar blimp? Still a good idea though

I hate auto-aim because you can't use it when in a car, which makes getting into cars kind of pointless.

sonderangerbot, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I climbed up on a water tower on Charge Island and shot a guy in a helicopter who had flown up to get me. It was really kinda cool because the guy wasn't moving or anything (it's not like the characters have to hold the controls or move the yoke since 99.9% of the time you don't see them once they get inside the chopper.)

Anyway. There's no fucking way I could've done that without auto-aim.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 14 July 2008 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

my old gta housemate has finally got this game so I'll probly be multiying about more now.

Ste, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:25 (fifteen years ago) link

I tried to invite some of you the other night, but it kept giving me error messages. I got czn in my files though.

The other night, I was giving helicopter rides to 12-year-old's. When one of them told me as we were boarding, no you fly it you're really good at it, I was genuinely touched.

Still felt like a pedo though.

I sent you a friend request today, rabbitwithfangs. I play as REDACTED.

Ste, Monday, 14 July 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I am on PS3 as DenaSmith - I've gotten alright at multiplayer, but I think there's whole 'nother level of player out there that I can't touch and still maintain some semblance of studying regimen.

I played a buddy online last night, though - 30 minute deathmatch, powerful weapons (assault rifles, RPGs, sniper rifles, etc.) in Alderney, and I beat him 13-2. I explained to him the necessity of having control over the cover-and-shoot tactics, and that shooting someone in the arm can actually kill them.

My favorite kill was one where I had just killed him, and I ran off in search of a much-needed body armor/health reboost. I ran in the direction of his respawn, so we ended up having a shoot-out in a graveyard, somewhere in Alderney. I ducked behind a tomb, with only a quarter of my health left, and only a pistol. He had me pinned pretty effectively, but I headshot him on a reload pause.

He was so pissed, he called a friend of ours and offered to sell his PS3 and the game to him that night. Thankfully, he didn't.

I'm adding all the PS3 owners on this thread as a friend, hope that's ok. I'm napawo72.

bnw, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

lol i had a dream last night that they were running an advert on tv for gta multiplayer, which showed hundreds of people (in game) dressed exactly the same all pouring out the back of an ice cream truck, and then someone pushing a shopping trolley with more people in the trolley. They all looked like they were having fun at least.

Ste, Saturday, 19 July 2008 09:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I was tood on hanger lane platform last night and a pigeon was cooing behind me, cue me looking round to try and take out the bugger.

Porkpie, Saturday, 19 July 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

ok i had a go on multiplayer today, it was okay. I like the car jack games.

i had a long go on free roam, which was more interesting. some dude came up to me and I'm sure he had a monkey head. And he was able to speak to me, in a generic greeting kind of way - how'd he do that ?

Ste, Saturday, 19 July 2008 21:13 (fifteen years ago) link

and a petrol bomb dropped from a moving car is a great weapon in multiplayer

Ste, Saturday, 19 July 2008 21:15 (fifteen years ago) link

top left trigger (i forget the silly names they give these buttons) for generic greeting, if yer lucky it occasionally comes up with something obscene.

ledge, Saturday, 19 July 2008 23:38 (fifteen years ago) link

ah cheers

just played again, did a fantastic snipe on somebody else sniping. BOOM

Ste, Sunday, 20 July 2008 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I came across a very random ped sitting on the wall of one of the freeways, smoking a cigarette, so i did the decent thing and shot her. The physics was brilliant, the shot sent her toppelling backwards over the wall and tumbling down the cliff side into the water.

wot a larf

Ste, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Does anybody on here play multiplayer for PS3? I can't go get any other games just yet, and would like to develop a team of folks I know to go take on groups of randoms.

I'm loving Team Mafyia work, as well as turf war, but don't have enough people to populate a large team.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 25 July 2008 20:57 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i'm gonna be online in a few minutes, never played team mafiya though.

after a typical chaos causing expedition in Time Square, I noticed a cop decided to give chase by commandeering a bus! Was kinda funny because I was in a bus too.

Ste, Thursday, 7 August 2008 08:49 (fifteen years ago) link

and i got slightly worried with my friend who came around last night, she was all "hit him, knock him to the floor, don't kill him just stand near him and frighten him, now follow him yeah yeah intimidate him, now trip him up, he's on the floor now kick him! " etc

err..

I got this the first time I logged in off the first guy I killed O_O He/she was terrible. Crashed their car right be and just sat there as I gunned 'em down.

Heh heh. Never gets old.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 04:03 (fifteen years ago) link

ultimately, do we all agree this was sort of a let-down?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah I'm considering selling my copy unless I can really get into the multi stuff soon

Euler, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a fine game, but the ridiculously positive reviews kinda hurt it.

Garrett Martin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:15 (fifteen years ago) link

i got what i wanted and more besides. do not understand the problems that people have with this game. lots of little quibbles, some more legitimate than others, that don't add up to anything nearly enough to break the game. and the mp onilne is probabaly the best and most varied i have experience.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

It has been a let-down.

The graphics are great, but it wasn't GTA-y enough for me.

It was never the violence that appealed to me really. It was the humor of it, and the way a game about a South-Central gangsta could turn into a Repo Man Area 51 hijinx caper with hippies and Elvis.

Some folks have said that things like the rocket booster pack was too over the top, but exploring four boroughs of a city that offers pretty much the same wet docks and project flophouses in each nook and cranny just didn't do it for me. I liked flying a helicopter from Los Santos across Mt. Shasta to San Fierro, or hitting a desert plateau at sunrise with Humble Pie roaring in the background.

I dunno. I can't stop saying how great everything looks in GTA4. But yeah, somehow it was a let-down.

(Multiplayer would be fun, but I can't keep up with those players born during the Bush I administration.)

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i went through a great 'let down' feeling of this game just after the final mission, griping about lots of stuff that should have been included, and how different it was to previous gta's.

i was still playing it though, and now i'm back to loving it again.

On the whole I haven't been let down.

Ste, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

and yeah, even though i don't multiplay it all that much - the multiplayer modes are the best i've seen in any game

Ste, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

As with most of the GTA games they did a PERFECT job of making me super interested, and LOVING the first part of it, but by the end I merely... liked it? And once I beat it it left NO taste in my mouth. Barely thought about it again post-beating. The only exception was San Andreas. Have I said this before? I may have.

Will M., Wednesday, 20 August 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I still like it a lot but haven't finished it.

needs more fun side missions. less "go drink with Dwayne or he's gonna send you a sad face message." more environmental changes that stick. more driving missions that are kill or be killed. and the mission redo part needs the fast forward option back.
