mark e, Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

and avoid the metalcore band too

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 19 November 2009 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

in my world, that goes without saying, but ta for the confirmation.
so, back to these hipster albums ..
i'm relying on this thread for future reference when they all appear in fopp @ £3 given that i have fallen off the radar in '09 (too much miles davis/david axelrod ..)

mark e, Thursday, 19 November 2009 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link

the film has its good points (as per usual with DePalma there is one long reveal-tracking shot that is fantastic). by contrast, the ending shot/sequence is some of the most laughably bad shit ever. also the acting is by and large terrible. and he takes at least one major liberty with the book that is completely against the grain of Elroy's writing (i.e., having one of the protagonists kill a woman)

scott seward, Thursday, 19 November 2009 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

These Violens types any good then? I know the name entirely because they are about to support the band White Lies on tour and I can say that is not a thing that piques my interest as a rule

i like it. their stuff from the EP they did and a single is on youtube. reminds me of lansing-dreiden, and that's a good thing with me. one of them was/is a part of lansing-dreiden, i think? the singer/guitar guy. i never look these kinds of things up.

Really? hmm. Maybe I should give it another chance. Their first three albums are pretty awesome, especially Castaways and Cutouts, and Picaresque. The Crane Wife seemed overproduced and kind of bland, tbh, and Hazards just seemed so unwieldy that I never devoted much time to it. I feel like the more The Decemberists invest in their rock-opera theatre-kid shtick, the harder it is for me to take them seriously.

loool dude i was joking

we be emi robin' (k3vin k.), Thursday, 26 November 2009 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

that's why i said hazards of love cause hipsters sometimes like the shittiest music (animal collective) and hazards of love is terrible, therefore hipster bait

FACK, Thursday, 26 November 2009 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Fucking hell. This is why you do not post to ILX while halfway through a nap.

GIRLS ALBUM

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 November 2009 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i hope i never, ever hear that record, accidentally or otherwise

electrical audio's sm57 (electricsound), Friday, 27 November 2009 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I actually decided to give them a chance when I saw a big flyer up on the kiosk for a show they are playing in my town in February.
Watched a couple of videos on youtube and I know some of their friends and the guy who directed the videos.
:-/

Trip Maker, Friday, 27 November 2009 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, decided to check them out because the singer in the band is wearing a Suede shirt on the poster.
Will probably go to the show just to meet chicks.

good call, good call

FACK, Friday, 27 November 2009 03:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess The Clientele's new disc isn't a "Hipster Album." And it's sure as hell not a big Rawk Album or a Mall-Rock or Emo-Punk Album. All of which leaves it in a funny nowhere land, which is a shame. Such a good group, and a fine new disc.

Anyway, F--k Buttons, I imagine.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:29 (fourteen years ago) link

so basically this is the thread where we list albums that were pitchfork best new music this year?

samosa gibreel, Friday, 27 November 2009 03:30 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that sounds about right

electrical audio's sm57 (electricsound), Friday, 27 November 2009 03:32 (fourteen years ago) link

That F--k Buttons album got a lot of glowing reviews, not just from Pitchfork.

And, surprisingly (to me), The Clientele's new disc has been reviewed less than their prior discs, it seems. Also, Pitchfork gave it an "okay" review (something in the 7s, I think).

Not sure if your comment was directed toward my prior post, in any event. (xp)

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:33 (fourteen years ago) link

But generally, yeah, I think if it's on Pitchfork's BNM list, it's a Hipster Album.

So: REAL ESTATE.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:34 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah no, it was not particularly directed at anyone, dude. having all of these albums already organized together like this just takes the fun out of it.

samosa gibreel, Friday, 27 November 2009 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

It's weird, but sometimes a Pitchfork Best New Music tag does little for an act. The magazine gave that Bear In Heaven disc an 8.4 and the BNM tag, but I've heard almost nothing else about the disc, and I wouldn't say it's a Hipster Album.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:39 (fourteen years ago) link

are bear in heaven any good, though? there was an album by a band called cymbals eat guitars that got BNM'd earlier in the year and it was absolutely horrible stuff, not at all a surprise that they didn't get very far.

samosa gibreel, Friday, 27 November 2009 03:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah. I downloaded that Cymbals Eat Guitars disc. Never felt compelled to listen to more than half a song, tho.

The :30 samples on that Bear in Heaven disc sound . . . okay. Hard to tell from that if the songs have the "massive choruses" promised by the P4K review. I'm going to give the full disc a go on Lala to see.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:44 (fourteen years ago) link

complete agreement on the complete turd that is that CEG album

electrical audio's sm57 (electricsound), Friday, 27 November 2009 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

There are two songs from that Bear In Heaven album here. Meh. I think the P4K review oversells the "towering choruses." And their use of electronics feels pretty uninspired to me.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 03:58 (fourteen years ago) link

lovesick teenagers by bear in heaven is pretty cool, besides i dunno, i actually kinda like cymbals eat guitars, but i can see why people wouldn't like them (the vocals)

FACK, Friday, 27 November 2009 04:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I got a BNM once. Don't feel much diffnt now than before.

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Friday, 27 November 2009 04:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Of the two Bear In Heaven songs I heard on that site I linked, Lovesick Teenagers is by far the better of the two.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 04:03 (fourteen years ago) link

wrt to hipsters i mean

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Friday, 27 November 2009 04:03 (fourteen years ago) link

It must have given your band some extra attention, I imagine.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 04:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Some bands that got the BNM and seem like they were quickly forgotten:

Wilderness
The Deadly Snakes
Single Frame
Shining
Giddy Motors

Evan, Friday, 27 November 2009 04:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't know the others, but Wilderness have made two discs since their BNM debut, and they've been pretty widely-reviewed and generally well-received.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 04:38 (fourteen years ago) link

But they didn't get the buzz and hype most BNM receivers enjoy after the review. Nobody except us fans (generally) really knows of Wilderness releases after the S/T or the band at all.

Evan, Friday, 27 November 2009 04:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess. I'm a fan of theirs, too. I still think they could be a monster breakout band (among a certain fan-base, at least). They do have that huge, complex rock sound.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 04:48 (fourteen years ago) link

You guys sound so conceited and gross. Good luck with that.

Hinklepicker, Friday, 27 November 2009 05:10 (fourteen years ago) link

What sounds conceited and gross?

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 27 November 2009 05:14 (fourteen years ago) link

clearly a hipster
