it is weird to see a picture of cx that is in the desert

my experience (wholly vicarious) is via chicago cx'ers and tales of misery and woe from muddy wisconsin fields in horrible weather. or from trendy blogs that feature craaaaazy pacnw ss racers wearing muck spattered ballerina outfits in the rainforest

not exactly desert, but yeah. over my left shoulder and behind me in pic is red rocks amphitheater.

that venue when wet is hellish adobe mud, and on my first warmup lap i pulled out no fewer than 25 goatheads. (the joy of tufo latex-works perfect for that).

might have to do with its intl sanctioning body being bundled somehow into summer games. i think they control which bike events are in the olys at all. this year they voted to shitcan the indiv track pursuit event i think, one of the more popular track races

i faked my own depth on ilx (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 01:53 (fourteen years ago) link

that makes sense. bit of a shame tho!

i saw something that suggested the UCI put the omnium in because the track cycling program would be done inside three days if they'd stuck with the pursuit. idiots!

eau de humanity (haitch), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 02:00 (fourteen years ago) link

The omnium is very olympics though.

I'd like to see an even more modern pentathlon: CX, downhill, Road TT, Road Race, Madison.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

still pissed at the removal opf Madison from the olympics, I was going to get tickets for that.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda shits me that swimming gets all those events, which seem to be there just so a phelps / thorpe type can rack up multiple golds. they should chop out some of that dead wood and redistribute, if they absolutely can't have any more total events.

one current solution to using hydraulics w/ road levers is to run standard shift cable to a transfer box which contains a converter and fluid reservoir

that's... bizarre on a few counts. like, a really small barrier. then a right side dismount-- ur doing it wrong. then woooooooooooow!

Have been reading "Slaying the Badger" and it mentions that Bernard Hinault's coach at La Vie Claire told him to go an learn right side dismounts for CX as a winter training exercise. He then used both side dismounts through the rest of his cross career.

So many thinks while whistling past this graveyard.

Just watching Koksijde (or however it’s spelt). Watching MVDP is a thing of supreme beauty. I hoped Iserbyt would make a go of it after Tabor. He is great, and seeing the almost literal David and Goliath thing is cool.

Now, the bad is that it’s boring enough that by far of my viewing focus and enthusiasm is women’s, and that’s been great to watch. del Carmen is such a great speed/power/handling combo.

Anyone out there?

and i approve this message (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 03:53 (four years ago) link

i haven't really been watching, but i'm going to nats with a buddy in a couple weeks. he's totally turned into a portland cyclocross dad

gbx, Wednesday, 27 November 2019 03:55 (four years ago) link

have a great time. i've lost track of you gbx, i should search ilxor to see yr adventures. if you get back up here and wanna give ski instruction, lemme know, i always take lessons.

i'm now on lap 7/8 of koksijde, and what MVDP does is so next level. the power is insane, but the fluidity AND precision AND power are equally amazing. he's taking 10-15 seconds per lap off people. Even when he momentarily goes off-line due to his aggression, it's just not a thing. the other super-elites are tri-podding along the same sections he RIPS, and they're still in the top 5. VDP is won't likely need to tripod today.

and i approve this message (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 04:19 (four years ago) link

i haven't been adventuring much! honestly been pretty sedentary lately d/t work. that'll be changing soon, though, as i've taken a new job much closer to home. got some time off coming up and am gonna be up in silverton for the first time ever in january B)

MVDP is just insane

my first time actually going to a real cx race, what a frikkin hoot. even just as a spectator i can see why my buddy, who's now an official portland cyclocross dad, has gone so bonkers for racing. makes me want to check out the nm scene next year

gbx, Monday, 16 December 2019 21:26 (four years ago) link

What flipped me out seeing website and name of the 2019 town name was that the 97 or 98 Nats, wayyyy before cx was quite a thing, was sites in my neighboring town, Lakewood, CO. My teammates who’d only upgraded to elite that year were able to race the big time nats event, riding over with their spare wheels on their shoulders. I mean, they got lapped and out, as I recall, bit still. Slow me was just cheering and handing up h2o. *feels antique*

and i approve this message (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 00:42 (four years ago) link

anyhow, sounds really fun.

get to see hecht race? seeing him race as a ~16 y/o against the local pro/elite cat in cx in ~2014 was amazing. usually, when i see those guys my reaction is "wow, they're so small/slight in the real," size-wise.

but even as a kid, hecht was the opposite- i was like, "HOW IS HE SO DAMN GINORMOUS?" he looked like a free safety. pure power. glad to see him do well.
