amt in baltimore ruled. does anybody know anything about the song that tsuyama (bassist) introduced as "a new song"? it had yodeling and was UNBELIEVABLE.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 18 June 2004 05:51 (nineteen years ago) link

god they played that in nc too!
Khoomei!

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 18 June 2004 06:38 (nineteen years ago) link

p.s. the decemberists < amt

oh I know! the people I was hangin' out with wanted to see the decemberists, and we left after two songs. (the long winters were really good though. just not as completely insanely mindblowing as AMT, who had one song that started in 4/4, shifted into 5/4 very subtly, then to 6/4, then back into 5/4...it made me woozy and punchy and delighted)

OH FUCKING LORD - RE: THAT VIDEO

Be sure to Loop! Loop, Loop, Loop. (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 11:43 (nineteen years ago) link

drummer totally old-school, holds his sticks palms-up & is awesome

He was switching grips in the show in Denton, but yeah, he seemed really old school. There's something awesome about a stone-faced drummer with a crew cut playing with AMT.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:27 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah looked completely at ease about being around those crazyasses.
i wish he would have bowed the cymbal with that strange bow that kawabata makoto was using on his guitar.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Have I told you guys the story about one of the guys, a drummer, who came along on tour with Mong Hang last summer? We got him really drunk & stoned. He said he was in Acid Mothers Temple, or had played with them or knew them or something. His English wasn't very good. Nice guy though!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

man, the between-song music last night was great, too.
can - soundtracks
oneida - secret wars
(something else i know but couldnt place)
miles davis - live/evil

if only the third one had been master of reality, it would have actually been the best concert of all time.

psychic paramount was good, too. their last song was close enough to sabbath, real drony over a super-heavy riff. its just tough to remember that the first two bands were pretty good when AMT were just so incredible. EACH of those guys is amazing at their instruments. theyre so individually good, that the really amazing thing i think is how well they gel. kawabata did this thing where, at the end of a song, he hung his feedingback guitar on one of the overhead speakers and left. right before he did that was just the most blistering 5 minutes of guitar attack ive ever heard or seen. all of a sudden, shred made sense to me, but this guy wasnt just shredding...

anyway, suffice it to say - i was a fan before, but now im hooked.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Ian, he had an amazing cell phone

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, Mong Hang's drummer Atsushi Tanaka played with AMT.

btw, Psychic Paramount features two former members of the defunct Laddio Bolocko, and they used to have a diff drummer than the one I saw with them at this show. I got a CDR of theirs a while back from the same label that issued the LB 2-CD compilation, and it was pretty good.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:00 (nineteen years ago) link

one year passes...
I revive this admittedly old tour thread because there's supposed to be a new tour next month, but Stormy Records off in Michigan just sent this:

the acid mothers show has been cancelled. some kind of visa problem.
sorry guys!

They were talking about their own in-store but it sounds like the whole tour is off? I tried going to acidmothers.com but it says 'no website is configured at this address'...

aw fuck

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

i bought my ticket already - i guess black dice and growing might have to suffice.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:38 (eighteen years ago) link

BUMMER

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

hrm they were supposed to play here this week. the tour was kind of a mess anyway since their opening band, aqui, broke up.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

growing sucks; how do they get booked for good shows???1?!?

anonymous noiser (ex machina), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Whoah, bummer. I hope the Terry Riley thing is still happening at UCLA. Hmm, I better call and see about this. . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Growing are great, based on their ArthurFest show, so none of that. xpost

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

growing doesn't suck, i like 'em.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

i read somewhere - brainwashed, i think - that its only the first week of the tour that's been cancelled due to visa problems?

man, i revisited Born To Be Wild in the USA 2000 the other day, i love that semi-bootleg atmos-fug, what a mighty group in their prime (anyone heard the new configuration yet?)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:57 (eighteen years ago) link

They have Tabata from Zeni Geva playing bass these days, right?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Toronto and Montreal were both cancelled as well. I understand that efforts are being made to reschedule for late October, so maybe all the first-week dates will get pushed to the end of the tour. Windishagency.com still has dates listed from 9/21 to 10/24, so it looks like whatever Ward Fowler read was correct.

Growing are great!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

They aren't playing here for a whole month... 17th of October. I hope that show is still on. God damn I want to see them.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:14 (eighteen years ago) link

from the band site
* * * Unfortunately we have to cancel the concerts at least 14th and 21st of September. We have still the problem to get the US work visa from the US consulate. When we'll be able to get our visa, we're going to come to US as soon as possible. We apologize everyone who was going to come to the concert that was canceled. Anyway we really would love to come to US with all members of AMT & TCI as soon as possible!

drone/a/saur (william), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Tour's on, according to the website. I LOVE the new 'band' and really wanna see them in NYC but Ticketweb aren't selling tix online. Does anyone in New York know how much tickets are at the Knitting Factory show? Do you think it'll sell out?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:44 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, so are they touring or not?? Did the Visa thing get worked out?? No one seems to know. Has anyone seen them yet?

Rudy Tuesday, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 06:19 (eighteen years ago) link

They are here. I know because we played with them and Terry Riley at UCLA on Saturday night at the Terry Riley 70th Birthday Celebration (which was pretty great- Terry sang a beautiful Indian song and played "Rainbow in Curved Air" too). AMT did "In C". They ruled. Do go check em out- it's just a fourpiece, they weren't able to bring two drummers as they had intended. Tabata kicks so much ass it's ridiculous.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 06:32 (eighteen years ago) link

As long as Hiroshi is there, I'm a happy man.

Tix just bought - thanks Drew!

PS "Rainbow in Curved Air" live??! FUCK!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw em in SF on Friday. they had two drummers. i forget who the second drummer was (some white guy that's in some noise/indie band in the states).

JaXoN (jaxon), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 22:54 (eighteen years ago) link

i saw them in SF on friday and literally blew out my right ear drum. great show, until i left and couldn't hear a thing in my right ear. in any event, was kinda weird... they had a fill-in extra drummer (from subarachnoid space), and Philip Manley of Trans Am was their roadie... and Hiroshi smashed his guitar. rawk and/or roll

I just learned about this from a guy I know from school whom I ran into on the bus. I want to go, but I probably can't afford it.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Need to check on the other LA show they're doing -- would have loved to have been at the UCLA show but a friend's birthday party took precedence!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

tix were only $12!!!

(somehow ended up $35 for two with 'service fees' though - fuckin' Ticketmaster!)

Pffff.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I wish that they had been able to get into the country when i tried to go see them at rothko in nyc last month. it seems that we hate to bring weird japanese musicians over to the us.

i used to book my college's independent music festival and i tried to get damo suzuki, but he also couldnt get across customs.

Gonna make a day of it on Saturday in Lawrence. Been a few years since I visited Love Garden.

Oh fiddle, I could have sworn they were playing a separate LA date. Ah well.

Yay Denton, the home of happiness.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw Acid Mothers Temple w/Kinski at the Entry and thought they were fantastic..then a bunch of people I knew went to see them at the Triple Rock later on and said they sucked...I guess they had a more stripped down lineup and it was boring wank..the vers. I saw had about 6 or 7 people, super great chugga chugga space rockin' w/two people cranking on weird knob analog synths making sqwacks and squelches....sweet.

but maybe I have bad taste in psych and all these other folx are right...who knows?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

AMT are great and your friends are feebs. (But they could have easily just had a bad show.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah....I think it might have been a "lineup" thing...I think they said it was only a four-piece....focused mainly on guitar solos....the big lineup I saw (while obv. doing lots of solos) was more focused on building up into big Hawkwind bulldozing riffs....
