Mordy, I've never read Attali but Mark Sinker has, and Mark's also read me and Lester Bangs and Richard Meltzer and he's listened to Xenakis and watched Xena: Warrior Princess and seen Daphne & Celeste on Never Mind The Buzzcocks. You can and should see what Mark says about all of us and all of these here:

The Rise And Sprawl Of Horrible Noise Part One

The Rise And Sprawl Of Horrible Noise Part Two

In any event, does Attali have any particular ideas that you think we can use here?

ok ethan i'll play them hot shots II and madvillain next time and they'll still say it's shite. what i'm trying to say is that people in general are into adult-contemporary/indie dreck like snow patrol, and anything with a bit of originality is shunned.

My two co-workers (neither is a critic) who've played it at work after downloading it out of curiosity basically had the reaction of "eh, whatever," not getting what the big deal is either way.

(my girlfriend likes 'em, though)

okay pretty much anything on the teenpop thread is fair game, but.....

How Ashlee says "ruuuule breaker" sounds a lot like McCartney saying "aaaaaah mater" in "Jet" by Wings. (For whatever its worth, I heard maybe six songs from the new Ashlee in the Billboard offices back in December, and this was probably one of my favorites.)

I like Doctor Casino's argument (end of 90s vs. start of 00s) and the suggestion of things by Stone Temple Pilots and Barenaked Ladies, though I've never heard the songs in question. STP and the Ladies could only have existed in the 90s, and can be viewed as self-limiting mechanisms: inevitable yet toxic byproducts of the decade.

Similarly, "Pretty Fly for a White Guy"

AC/DC's "If You Want Blood" and Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" don't work in Empire Records since they galvanize alternia (or at least how the film represents alternia) through music that isn't alternative.

i think this magnificent, gorgeous single deserves its own thread. massive drums, dramatic high-end, growling bass which sounds like engines revving up, gorgeous us-against-the-world lyrics ("i took an oath, i'mma stick it out 'til the end" - aaahhh), and an aboslutely massive crashing powerballad tune. i've played it about 95854944 times in a row since i first heard it. early contender for single of the year!

all of the lex's reviews rest on the piling up of nice-sounding adjectives like that, but using 'gorgeous' and 'massive' twice like that is pretty weak shit even for him.
